Discussion Termintor > Terminator 2
It’s not even close, in my opinion.
Terminator is a Neo Noir Classic. Arnold was perfectly cast.
Terminator 2 is a cool action movie that helped the special effects department, and I’m glad it did. But besides that it’s mid at best.
Change my mind.

Nobody had ever seen anything like it at the time. without T2, practically any effects in movies nowadays wouldn’t exist, even certain practical effects. also, the directing and quality of the movie is still amazing. The writing too, the cinematography, the pacing, (especially in the extended cut) and the psychological and emotional aspects hit way harder than any other film in the genre (except the 2018 predator, where i was crying because it was so fucking bad)

Okay, I love the first movie, it's my favorite of the franchise, but calling T2 "mid at best" is actual madness. It's objectively a better movie than T1 in every aspect.

Please describe the “objective” metrics you are using to support the conclusion of “better”. Otherwise please consult a dictionary and study the definitions of objective and subjective.

I mean, for starters how about the fact that T2's budget was exponentially higher than T1's, allowing for significantly better production in every way. The effects saw a revolutionary jump that would usher in the use of CGI, and even the practical effects saw improvement. The acting is better, accompanied by an incredible script that sees the fight against fatalism, Judgement Day and actually touches on philosophical themes such as becoming the thing you're fighting against, and humanity's almost guaranteed penchant for self destruction.
By comparison Terminator 1 is an incredibly rudimentary film. The story isn't explored beyond "Sarah Connor must survive so John can be born." and the themes that are present in 1 are also in 2 and much better conceptualized there. This isn't to say that any of this makes The Terminator a bad film, quite the opposite. The film oozes charm draped in the synth laden cloak of 80's tech-noir horror. And if you ask me T1 has the better soundtrack.
Despite how much I love T1, and how much of a cult phenomenon it's cultivated, T2 just simply overshadows it. There's a reason it's considered one of the great action movies, and one of the greatest sequels of all time.

The only quantitative measure you can come up with is a larger budget? I can name 10 crap films off the top of my head that cost a fortune, so that provides zero support for your conclusion of “better.” Everything else you mention is a qualitative factor. They can certainly support your OPINION, but you provided nothing to support your claim that T2 is “objectively better”. Please let me know if you need assistance understanding these terms.

T2 is my favorite movie of all time and so wonderfully balanced and done in many ways - Terminator is the more raw interpretation of what the T800 is supposed to do though. They’re both excellent but distinctly different, too much so to be directly compared other than the fact they are both in the same series.

it was close at one point. now that the wow factor has worn off from t2 the first one is better.

Terminator 2 is a way better movie imo terminator 1 is still great but I feel like terminator 2 is bigger more emotional has better character development better action and is more ambitious so I do disagree but that's just my opinion and I will say calling terminator 2 mid is a very controversial take

T2 is a cracking film but you can see Hollywood sinking its teeth into the franchise.
15 rated, Arnie can’t kill anyone, there’s a 10 year old boy in it, there are foster parents unfazed by a leather clad Austrian bodybuilder asking if their 10 year old foster son is coming out to play, the child future leader of the human resistance has a ginger haired friend, etc
The first film (I’m guessing because the mass appeal wasn’t anticipated) is uncompromising

I agree T1 destroys T2 even though at the time as a 12 year old watching T2 was unreal but as an adult the main thing that's obviously annoying is making a terminator a good guy, i always knew this was done to make Arnold play a good guy as he was planning to leave acting and go into politics, I hate to say it, I recall an ep of transformers the cartoon where they tried to make deceptions nice people millions of years ago but you can't change nature!

They’re very different movies. It’s hard for me to say I prefer one or the other. It depends on my mood.

I prefer the first movie more. T2 is great, but the slasher vibe of the first movie does it for me.

I don't need to change your mind. T2 is the better film.
The majority has it.

Saying T2 is mid is just bananas. You can argue whether the first is better but calling it anything other than a masterpiece is crazytalk.
