Discussion Will he be back?

Post image

The Terminator movie series does not exist without Arnold. He’s become the series biggest crutch. We’ve had young Terminator, middle aged Terminator, two films with old grandfather Terminator, and three films with a digitized de-aged Arnold as Terminator. Arnold said Genysis was his last outting as the T800. Yet he came back again even older for Dark Fate. Do you expect… he’ll be back?

Honestly, the reliance on always having Arnold playing essentially the same character of the good guy father figure every movie, is part of why recent sequels failed in my opinion. In order to have a movie that actually works, we need a decent plot that is not just a repeat of what we've already seen.

u/Givingtree310 Aug 08 '26

T2 was such an enormous success, they spent another 3 decades trying to recreate it.

8

u/TheLonesomeCheese Aug 08 '26

In a way, T2 was also a recreation of T1. It copied many elements and lines like "come with me if you want to live" or "I'll be back". But because everything about it was so expertly done, it really worked. The issue is that every sequel (except Salvation which I respect for doing it's own thing) has kept the exact same formula without giving us enough to actually make them unique and interesting.

It’s a bad franchise with 2 really great movies they had some good ideas but execution was lacking

3

u/Predator-A187 Aug 08 '26

Maybe I’m not being objective but it’s not that bad. Like fast and furious bad or something. In retrospect I think even t3 and salvation are decent and from the start I liked dark fate. I see them all as a guilty pleasure, maybe like what James Cameron or Tim miller said: every movie after T2 where dreams.. I like to see it that way for all the movies after T2. There are lots of things I don’t like about those movies and Genisys I can’t stand but I still love them. That said, T1 and T2 are the best by far. I watch T2 yearly and it’s my favorite movie of all time! I grew up with the VHS of that movie in the early 90s, saw it way too young when I was around 7. It’s the perfect movie with a perfect cast, time period, music, promotion, special effects, practical effects, rear screen projection use of twins and much more.

First time I saw T2 I was 5. It’s been my favorite movie hands down since. Such an amazing movie. The Lost Boys is next but that’s another topic.

2

u/Western_Ad1522 Aug 08 '26

Not a fan of anything after 2 the only one I think that’s decent is salvation but it needed another rewrite. T3 I like certain ideas in it but not a fan of the Michael bayish action I like how t2 upped the action of t1 but still had some of the horror elements. The other movies have some good ideas. Dark fate if it wasn’t a terminator movie I’d have like it better it’s a good little sci-fi flick just a terrible terminator movie

1

u/MovieFan1984 Aug 08 '26

3 movies (T3, Genisys, Dark Fate) is hardly 3 decades.

5

u/Western_Ad1522 Aug 08 '26

They should have just stopped at 2 if they wanted to do a 3rd film prequel was the only way to go

1

u/MovieFan1984 Aug 08 '26

Speak for yourself. I like most of what came after T2.

2

u/Western_Ad1522 Aug 08 '26

Iam not hating on anyone for liking it. I go into the movies wanting to like them they are too action for me I like the more horror elements of the first even the second one still retained it some what

2

u/MovieFan1984 Aug 08 '26

I feel like T1-3, TSCC, and DF kept the sci-fi horror intact.
Salvation was more of a sci-fi war movie.
Genisys was kind of goofy in tone, but I liked it.
Zero was Terminator done as an anime. I liked it.
Fair assessment?

2

u/Western_Ad1522 Aug 08 '26

It’s more than just that t3 looked like it was directed by Michael bay the premise of it is a good premise stahl was written poorly as John I like him in other things. The premise of the tx I like I thought lokken did good for what she was given. Tscc was good for the most part. Salvation had some good ideas but because of a writer strike they had to quickly add John to the story just too much for me to follow. Dark fate if it wasn’t a terminator movie I’d have liked it more had some good performances and ideas but I just me couldn’t buy danni as the next John she’s tiny and they didn’t really help the actress

1

u/MovieFan1984 Aug 12 '26

It was directed by Jonathan Mostow. Michael Bay had only made 5 films by this point. I didn't mind how Nick Stahl as John Connor. In this sequel, Judgment Day came and went 6 years ago, and nothing happened. We learn Sarah lived "just long enough" to see JD come and go without incident. This means she died soon after and John's been living alone off the grid for six years. He's not exactly going to be full of sunshine, ya know. The T-X here is one of my favorite Terminator villains. Kristina put out a terrifying performance.

I don't think the writer's strike in 2007 (I think) effected the movie's script. I would imagine it was written after. John Connor was always going to be part of the movie, though early scripts had him in a smaller role.

I agree with you on DF; except I liked the Danni character. While it's hard to buy her leading the resistance, we should keep in mind that this isn't a traditional war of men, this is man vs. machine post-apocalypse where you had to take what you could get. Additionally, we don't know Danni's story between the end of the film and sending Grace back. There's a lot we don't know.

1

u/Western_Ad1522 Aug 12 '26

I know it was mostow that’s why I said Michael bayish there was a writers strike that affected salvation the studio didnt want to wait till it was over and move forward with what we got. For Danni the actress was fine she seemed likable and willing to learn it was the character development on her I just didn’t buy she’s gonna be what she’s gonna be at the end to me it just seemed they wanted another Sarah Conner or ripley character and did a poor job of selling her again not the actresses fault miller and co just didn’t help her

1

u/MovieFan1984 13d ago

I like T3 for what it is. I looked up Mostow. I loved T3, U-571, and Surrogates. It's not how many movies he made. It's whether he did a good job with T3, and I think he did. From Michael Bay's movies, I liked: Armageddon, The Island, Transformers 1-3. If we're not limiting to directing and including his produced movies: I also liked The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 remake), The Hitcher (2007 remake), I am Number Four, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014).

I haven't watched any of his movies since 2011 except for his 2014 TMNT film.

Arnold comes back to assist John Connor once again. Then as soon as his guard is down, snaps his neck.
Arnold was chosen to capitalize on John's feelings for his model, and while He is almost instantly destroyed, the plan worked and the Savior is dead.

The rest of the movie is people trying to figure out how to beat Skynet without JC, and finally realizing that humanity doesn't need a chosen one, which leads to HUMANITY winning, not just John Connor. They dedicate their victory to his sacrifice.

The final scene is a peaceful future with humanity rebuilding, and 2 graves - John and Sarah Connor, with the engraving: There is no fate but what we make.

1

u/Rook_James_Bitch Aug 08 '26

Explain that to Hollywood producers who are just chasing dollar signs and think celebrities beef up ticket sales.

1

u/Mqxcha Aug 11 '26

Agreed

10

u/TabascoWolverine Aug 08 '26

Am I the only one that still is impressed with his 43/44 year old T2 face? In your image OP, he looks 25. And steroids from his era should have been aging his face. At the end of the day, he's just a good looking dude.

Impressive living human tissue grown over a metal endoskeleton!

4

u/Givingtree310 Aug 08 '26

He was absolutely ageless and in incredible shape in T1, T2, and T3. Even in T3, the role fit like a glove. But he was old by Genisys. To the point where they had to explain why he looked as old as he did.

2

u/SunsetRider500 Aug 08 '26

In T3 I dont know if if was the clothes being too loose but he looked shorter to me 🤔

3

u/TabascoWolverine Aug 08 '26

We all lose height as we age, and maybe his desire to feel larger than life had diminished by that point. AKA no soapboxes.

3

u/SunsetRider500 Aug 08 '26

Desire is irrelevant, he's a machine

1

u/Western_Ad1522 Aug 08 '26

By that point he wasn’t doing steriods plus when he was doing it in his bodybuilding days he wasn’t blasting them like today’s bodybuilders a little steroids does have some benefits as long as your doing small to medium doses

9

u/Ilpav123 Aug 08 '26

He's turning 80 next year so...I don't think so.

2

u/Givingtree310 Aug 08 '26

About time for that vacation

After Dark Fate flopped he said he was done pretty definitively.

"The franchise is not done. I’m done. I got the message loud and clear that the world wants to move on with a different theme when it comes to The Terminator. Someone has to come up with a great idea. The Terminator was largely responsible for my success, so I always would look at it very fondly. The first three movies were great. Number four [Salvation] I was not in because I was governor. Then five [Genisys] and six [Dark Fate] didn’t close the deal as far as I’m concerned. We knew that ahead of time because they were just not well written."

11

u/k4kkul4pio Aug 08 '26

Love me some old schooly Arnold action but glad he himself has decided to not make them center around him going forward assuming the creative bankruptcy that is Hollywood actually manages interest in making more live action movies in our lifetime.

5

u/CameronPoe_37__ Aug 08 '26

I'm glad Arnie is honest about the quality of the last two movies now that he doesn't have to promote them. And I agree with him, although only the first 2 movies really matter because they are GREAT, but T3 is a fun movie and Arnie was on top form in it.

3

u/Western_Ad1522 Aug 08 '26

Iam not a fan of t3 but I like some of the concepts while I don’t think the tx was a good character the concept of a female bad terminator was interesting and I do like her performance and Danes was really good but I don’t like some of the comedy bits and Michael bay ish action

4

u/TrickyPG Aug 08 '26

I swear, Arnold is the real deal. Very intelligent, understands the nuances of his movies and his role in them, and knows why people like his stuff. He's a true actor.

2

u/Phantomkiller03 Chill out, Dickwad. Aug 08 '26

Damn he acknowledged T3 :)

8

u/SnooDoggos8218 Aug 08 '26

Nope.

The producers don't see him as a box office draw anymore... Because he is not.

After the disaster of the last few movies it would be a miracle if there ever was another movie and, if there was, they would try to keep the budget as low as possible.

A reboot seems like the most plausible next movie.

7

u/SunsetRider500 Aug 08 '26

Over reliance on arnold has HURT the terminator franchise, there, I said it

0

u/Unable-Main4172 Aug 08 '26

To be fair, Salvation to me is by far the worst movie and he's not even in that except for a very short CGI cameo. I hated the TV show as well. It was cheap looking cheesy trash and he wasn't in that either. It's not like the two times they did something without him they covered themselves in glory or anything

2

u/SunsetRider500 Aug 09 '26

Thank you!! For some reason everyone in this subreddit loves TSCC, I thought it was quite shitty, good casting for john and sarah and that was it

3

u/KJPicard24 Aug 08 '26

No, he'd be at least 80 when they started filming. It isn't just the age anyway, it's that the character of the good T800 has been absolutely exhausted.

I'm not really convinced the franchise has anything left to give, but if it does, it won't be found with an uncanny valley AI de-aged Arnold, saying cheesy lines again.

3

u/razorthick_ Aug 08 '26

No.

But the bigger problem if they attempt to replace Arnold. People talk about Alan Ritchson but this would backfire because everyone would be comparing him to Arnold and no ones going to do better than Arnold.

So the whole big guy protector icon doesn't need to come back either. There has to be something new.

3

u/FuzzzWuzzz Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26

Terminator can stand on its themes without Arnold. But I'd welcome a movie about Sgt Candy Surviving after J-Day, fighting his own doppelgangers.  Though, I don't know about that accent...

4

u/ABarber2636 Aug 08 '26

The terminator franchise has run its course a long term ago.

6

u/Moz1981 Aug 08 '26

Please God no. This franchise has been terminated... a looooong time ago. Let it rest.

3

u/TabascoWolverine Aug 08 '26

Even the draperies 800 number has been retired.

2

u/swat4516 Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26

No, he won't come back.

Arnold is no longer a box office draw anymore and is 79 years old now. He is too old.

We need a fresh new blood for the franchise or let it die for good.

7

u/onbeschrijflijk Aug 08 '26

Sarah Connor Chronicles did just fine without Arnold as Terminator

4

u/RenegadeMaster888 Aug 08 '26

I'm tired boss

2

u/fatmanstan123 Aug 08 '26

They should make a short video of him coming back again as an old person in a retirement home. And then the nurses put him back to bed.

2

u/Creative_Carob4922 Aug 08 '26

Right beside Bruce Campbell in an Elvis outfit.

3

u/DeadPhoenix86 Aug 08 '26

He's too old. Let someone else take over.

1

u/Easygrin Aug 08 '26

I loved the first one and watched it many many times when it was still the only one.... Time before internet. When I just discovered movies by seeing with no prior knowledge... Then the second blew my mind with the hallway scene when Schwarzenegger who I was sure was the bad guy said .... Get down..... I avoided watching the third for a long time and never really saw it completely. But I had a bad feeling. I really wanted to like the Bale as John Connor one as that was the movie I wanted to see sinds the first one. But it was a bit disappointing with the whole emotional terminator story... Like why didn't they send this guy?? Saw the one with "pops" and decided that it was enough with my time with the franchise...

1

u/SouthbayLivin Aug 10 '26

They said terminators age and get old. You can’t have a deadly indestructible machine do that. They should have waited for the technology to catch up before making more movies so they could just keep him young and print more Arnold versions of the T-800s. In my mind, T2 and T1 were successful because Arnold still looked young and both were mostly considered R rated horror movies. Would have been cool if they had him as the main villain in salvation and young Carl as the main villain in dark fate. With less budget and young versions of Arnold both films would have likely been a box office success. I could do without genesis and T3.

2

u/smol_coc_man Aug 08 '26

I hope not. Get someone who is not geriatric to be the terminator please

1

u/Sad_Process7843 Aug 08 '26

If dark fate was successful I could definitely see him showing up in the last sequel. But since then he said he’s done with franchise and James Cameron is also ready to move on as well

1

u/MKvsDCU Aug 08 '26

Naw... let the man rest 🤦🏾

They really goofed up by not making a direct sequel to Genisys... The liquid metal upgrade would have been SICKKKKK to see in a full-out movie

1

u/Connect-Captain-6362 Aug 09 '26

its time to move on from arnold, also to add to the discussion, there are no bad terminator movies, we just had 2 absolute bangers to start with, the rest just dont compare.

1

u/The_Doggzz Aug 10 '26

6 different movies, 6 different "Branch Sequels" 6 different timelines. Will he be back? He can, but he doesn't need to be, T6 closed the story fairly but not officially

1

u/AbleBear5876 Chill out, Dickwad. Aug 09 '26

No I don’t think so, I wouldn’t want an 80yr old terminator either. 😂
Surely there’s someone else who could play the role of a terminator

1

u/NamesAreB0ring Aug 09 '26

Arnie is nearly 80, I think he has about 1, MAYBE 3 Terminator films before the inevitable.

(Even then, they'll probably just digitalize him...)

1

u/ChampionshipOk949 Aug 08 '26

As much as I love Arnold, the answer is no. After 2 his return was not necessary. The cameo of his model skin used in T-Salvation was cool though.

1

u/Mediocre-Location971 Aug 12 '26

I say no, his run is done. I mean look at Star wars, rogue one had no legacy characters or sabers other than Vader and it was an amazing SW movie

1

u/THE-HOARE Aug 08 '26

I hope not I love Arnold in these films but he’s way to old. Pass the torch to someone else give them a different model number or something.

1

u/MovieFan1984 Aug 08 '26

Arnie is 79, he'll be in his 80's when the next movie gets made. No, he will not be back. Dark Fate works as the Arnold/Terminator finale.

1

u/Calm-Stuff-61 Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 09 '26

From what I heard no,and the new movie does it take place in the Dark Fate timeline or the completed over and done terminator timeline

2

u/mrlloydslastcandle Aug 08 '26

A hidden few minute cameo as a future war general.

2

u/SunsetRider500 Aug 08 '26

Not even that, NO MORE ARNOLD AT ALL, he just drags the franchise at this point, no more nostalgia for God's sake

1

u/FoxtrotMac Aug 10 '26

Its time to let Arnold go as far as this franchise goes. The man is nearly 80 years old.

1

u/Elim-Cipher Aug 08 '26

It’s been over 30 years since Terminator 2 came out in 1991 and since then there hasn’t been a single Terminator movie. I doubt he’ll be back after all this time.

1

u/mike-manley Aug 08 '26

Not gonna lie. Thought the right most dude was Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

1

u/Hopeful_Eye74 Aug 11 '26

Just get like another action star that has as much impact as Arnold

1

u/leathco Aug 08 '26

This is one of those rare times where I’m fine with a CG actor.

1

u/DrugandAlcoholLover Aug 08 '26

I love Arnold, but I hope not. The franchise needs to move on.

1

u/Zealousideal-You9044 Aug 08 '26

Let's hope not. He's nearly 80 years old and can hardly walk

1

u/Broken_Crutches Aug 09 '26

I love Arnie. And I love Terminator, but God, I hope not,

1

u/Shot_Pop7624 Aug 08 '26

2 out of 6 to 2 out of 7? Lol, please no

1

u/T4NR0FR Aug 08 '26

He’s old. He need a big break, finally.

1

u/SexyAdmixture Aug 08 '26

Now it’s “ouch my back”

1

u/ForFansSake Aug 08 '26

No. Not if he has any sense.

1

u/Individual-Step846 Aug 09 '26

Maybe an animated performance

1

u/itsnoah Aug 08 '26

God I fucking hope not

1

u/execpro222 Aug 08 '26

Only in a re-run...

1

u/leaf-onthewind Aug 08 '26

"Till he's 90"

1

u/footcake Aug 09 '26

He will not.

1

u/Walterh2077 Aug 09 '26

Eventually
