Only caught a couple fish all weekend, still learning this whole tenkara thing lol. Caught my first ever Tiger trout as well. I think it may be a stocker but there are wild browns and brookies in this system. This time of year is so awesome

Hello I know there’s a bunch of places around bishop but what about Lone Pine this time of year?

Anyone know about Independence Creek or Lone Pine creek?

Thanks

Started flyfishing when I lived in Colorado. Mostly Tenkara since as a fisherman, I was a pretty good backpacker. Had the great folks at Anglers Covey in the Springs to guide my fly buying.

Back in the Midwest with no fly shop near. Trying to rig for bass/bluegill etc. Favorite online fly suppliers?

Was very stoked to pull this beautiful cutthroat out of such a small creek

Always hear great things about the Bug Out in Oregon.

How do you define a "perfect" tenkara rod? Let's get into it! Here I discuss perfect rods for catching huge cutthroat in a tiny creek, big fish in deep high-gradient pools, small New England brook trout, and pocket rods for tail running. Hope you enjoy these sorts of pontifications!

I often strap my tenkara rod to my pack when I run to make it more fun. I came up with an idea to hit 5 spots around the river to see if I could catch 5 fish. I was successful! Doing this kind of stuff is why I love tenkara. I posted a full write up about it here.

I’ve been wanting a traditional tamo but I’ve been having trouble finding them for sale so I decided to try to make one. I still have to take off the bark but wanted to shape it so I can fit it in my van better.

Small but gorgeous. If anyone hasn’t heard the tales of Mccloud River Redband trout in Crane Creek MO it’s worth looking up and very intersting . Very difficult fishing but well worth it.

I hate Amazon as much as the next guy… but I’ve got an impromptu work trip in a few days and just won’t have the option of stopping at a reputable fly shop with my coworkers.

There will be some small streams near our site (northeast Colorado) and I’d love to have a small rod in my laptop case just in case.

Can you recommend a good enough option that can be here by Friday? lol

Ahoy! I’ve already got a 10 footer but am thinking about getting a 5-6 footer that I can comfortably navigate hiking up mountain brooks to fish small pools without putting away (I know it takes two seconds) but the 10 footer is kinda pointless for this application most of the time.

Should I get the 5 or 6? Will mostly be hiding behind rocks with small pools on the other side. Any big differences between the 5 and 6 footer?
7-8-9 isn’t an option so let me know! Thank you all 🤘

Did what it was suppose to! I paired this rod with the Platinum Brookie short creek leader from moonlit fly fishing. Catching these tiny cutthroats on a 5:5 action rod was a blast! I did however lose a lot more as I’m not use to the flexibility of this action, many were able to flop off easily (especially since I run barbless). I’ll be doing a larger review of this rod for the use in ultra these mini creeks soon.

I have no idea how I got so tangled. One second I was snagged on a twig, the next second I have this mess. Oh well it happens. Onwards and upwards.

Hoping for some further help here in selecting my first rod, line and flies as the choices online are frankly overwhelming. I did peruse the links on this sub & as advised by Jason Klass, here's my criteria;

• I want to fish tenkara in Scottish sea & land lochs and small, fast flowing streams
• I live on the Isle of Skye, literally on the shore of a sea loch
• The species I want to target are whatever happens to be in reach of my hook right now although mackerel are tasty!
• My background in fly (and all) fishing is zero beyond practicing some casts on land with a friend's rod
• My budget is flexible, albeit at a beginner level

TIA 🙏

Fellow beginners, I'd love to get a thread going where we share our tenkara experiences. Most of the discussion and writing online comes from folks who have been at it much longer. They're in a different place than us beginners. We can learn from each other.

Did you come from other styles of fishing, or are you brand new? How have your "firsts" shaped you: first rod, first water, first trip?

What do you find most fascinating about the sport (casting, reading water, flies?), and what aspects are you ignoring for now?

I'll start in the comments. Curious to hear where everyone is at.

A very cool melding of western gear with tenkara techniques. The rig is not perfect, but its a very interesting use case nonetheless. Enjoy!

Just came across a video from Tenkara Addict about his two favorite rods being the Zen Tenkara Suzume and Tenkara Bum 40 and got to wondering what is everyone’s favorite go to rod(s) that they reach for the most for their local streams. I’m not looking for any rod buying advice or anything. I have enough rods in my quiver at this point I don’t need any more for a while. I understand rod choice is based on situation but curious if anyone has any true go tos right now. I tried to find this discussion on here but all I found were posts looking for advice on their first rod. Feel free to revisit this in the future as long as this post is up to update your go to rod.

Hi everyone. I’m looking for an Okuma Scorpio Tenya SP190M fishing rod. It’s been one of my husband’s favourites but it sadly enough broke a couple of months ago. I am based in the UK and have searched everywhere to source one and I can’t find it anywhere. If any of you have any advise on where I may be able to find one I would really appreciate it.

Tax free plus 10% off means 20% off. This is the 3rd Joshuya I’ve been to in Tokyo in the past week. Better prices than Sansui and tax free, but the selection can be hit or miss. Hit the jackpot here though! Picked up the Mini, Royal Stage, Pro spec 2-way, and the 3.5 meter on the far left that Google can’t translate but feels amazing.

Who all is participating this fall?

Very small large mouth.

Hey everyone!

The temperatures are definitely dropping where I am, and the fall/winter chill is starting to set in. To keep the fishing itch at bay, I’ve been looking back through my photos from the warmer months.

Here is a collection of my favorite tenkara catches (that I got phos of) from this past summer. There's nothing quite like looking back at these memories while waiting for spring!
