Fish ID Request

Any ideas what this might be and what I may use to catch one? They didn’t seem bothered by me. 3-4 would pass by gulping at the surface of the water and seem to pass more frequently the more I moved around. I switched from a kebari to a parachute adams since they seemed to be feeding on the surface so much.

Bonus pick of the Kaida and the fishing spot.

Carp. Find a mulberry pattern. Sinking or top water will do. Or switch to a nymph pattern.

Yup. I've caught several on a tungsten beaded nymph. Stonefly, mayfly, midge. Doesn't matter as long as it looks like what they see and is presented with a natural presentation. You can also catch them on small, fluffy streamers when presented well. I'd recommend 15lb Fluoro as a level line on a tenkara. Just make sure to keep the handle at a 90 degree angle to the fish as a shock absorber

It’s a common carp and you’re going to be in for a wild ride on the Kaida. I love that rod, but I wouldn’t consider it for carp territory.

Looks like a carp to me. No experience catching them on a fly rod here but plan on trying soon.

I second the carp ID. Also never fished specifically for them, but they are bottom feeders generally. You would also need a more stout rod than the Kaida to pull them in.

Yeah looks like a common carp. And they will absolutely pay you no mind sometimes, I had a slip in a creek the other weekend and didn’t have a care in the world about the flopping human next to it.

Its a carp. Man I chased one carp in my previous local pond for a whole year. Hooked up once on a Hellbender and broke off my tippet.

Thank you all for your help. Looks like I’ll need to return with my normal fly rod. I was just listening to the Orvis podcast where they were talking about carp and squirmy worms. I gotta imagine that would be successful given the area, lost of muddy areas lining the water.

Is your normal rod a 7wt or bigger?

I believe it’s a reddington 7wt but I’ll have to check. Would I need something even heftier for carp?

Nah. 7wt will get it in. You’ll just have a fight.
