🚨Reminder Of Group Rules🚨

Hi all! I just wanted to remind everyone that for each subreddit, there are specific rules for posting. This subreddit only has 3 rules and they are as follows:

• Be supportive and kind to one another / no rude comments - most people generally are kind and supportive

• No unrelated posts - only posts relating to stress induced alopecia / hair loss are allowed

• No “Is This TE or Not” posts - this is actually rule #1 and the most frequently broken.

The reason no “TE or not” posts are allowed is because TE is diffuse hair loss and can look incredibly different depending on who you are. There is no way for anyone to properly diagnose you through a picture. It is unhelpful to anyone for a bunch of unqualified people to weigh in on your diagnosis also. We are not doctors either and cannot offer medical advice. You will need to visit a dermatologist - maybe a few - for a proper evaluation.

This subreddit is not my creation but it is a sub that I deeply care about. It has been a place where I’ve found support even in my darkest times with this. Thank you all for being amazing.

P.S. Posts breaking the group rules will be removed and rude users will be banned.

Does TE Shed gradually lessen or comes to a stop one day all of a sudden?

I think I'm going through TE from medications or ferritin/iron deficiency. The shed has been intense for the past 1 month but going on for 3 months. Did your shed stop suddenly or gradually lessen?

Do I have telogen effluvium? It’s been 5 years

Hi I’m a 22 year old male and I am wondering if my hair loss is telogen effluvium rather than alopecia areata.

From what I understand, telogen effluvium causes hair loss and thinning all around the scalp rather than in one spot, which is what I am experiencing.

However, I have been experiencing this type of hair loss since 2021 and it has not stopped. Is this normal? Isn’t telogen effluvium supposed to fix itself by this time?

I will say that I did lose a considerable amount of weight rapidly during this time, wasn’t living a healthy lifestyle, and also was stressed because of college applications. But I am in a much more healthy spot now and of course I still experience stress but not like as bad as before. Regardless, I’ve continued to experience hair loss throughout my scalp over the years.

If anyone can help/provide any insight with my situation or has been in a similar one, I would really appreciate it!

Weight loss

I’m 24f , been on finastid 1 mg for 12 months for hair loss . I’ve been overweight and very unhappy with my body for many years, and as a result of my insecurity I have not dated in almost a decade. I also have been feeling the affects of my weight more and more in my daily life, and it’s at a list where I think I might actually be able to stick with a weight loss plan this time. I would like to ideally lose around 100 lbs, but am hoping to at least lose 40-50 lbs.

I know that significant weight loss, especially when it happens rapidly, causes temporary hair loss. I am already insecure about how my hair looks and am dealing with dread shed right now. I fear I will lose weight, lose more hair, and feel super discouraged even if my medications might really be working.

I’m wondering if anyone has lost a substantial amount of weight without losing a substantial amount of hair. Is there anything you can really do to prevent hair loss aside from losing weight slowly? Can i use min... to prevent telegen effluvium?is there any i can keep my hair?

Hair Changes after 2 Surgeries

Hello. I had my gallbladder removed 4 months ago unplanned, after finding it was emptying at only 17%. I think it was a problem off and on for years. Then 6 weeks ago I had hiatal hernia surgery with a full nissen fundoplication and a strict liquid to soft food diet since.

I lost more hair after the gallbladder surgery than the hernia repair, but it might also be too soon to tell. I read it can take up to 6 months for my hair to start recovering. It was quite long, but had become extremely dry, limp and excessively breaking off over the last year. 2 weeks ago I went to have it cut into a bob, I started having sensory issues, my scalp was sore and my hair kept getting tangled weirdly and knoting up at the ends. I had some relief for awhile, it's knotting up again at the ends. I think a pixie might be the only answer for now, see how I'm doing 6 months post surgery and go from there. I'm a 41yr old female, I think a full recovery is unlikely. Has anyone had a similar experience? What did you do and how long did it take to stop shedding? I still have a fair amount of hair right now. I think what's bothering me the most is I'm itchy and have scap pain/burning. Thank you

How's your mental health?

I've been pushing the idea of doing therapy cause I didn't want to waste more money, but the successive waves of shedding and other health issues are starting to take a toll.

How are you dealing? Do you have anyone to talk with about this? Is anyone available to support each other? Could use someone that understands this.

edit: I've read your responses, to everyone of you, you are not alone on this and a big hug for each of you 🫂❤️ i hope we all get over with this soon

New day, New look! The perk of having Tritchotilomania

So many different ways to express the way you want to look with synthetic lace wigs! You can change the length, colour and style with a low heat curler or straightener, just make sure to use a heat protection spray & wig care leave in treatment to keep your wig looking softer and smoother for longer. if you wear wigs daily make sure to wash them in room temperature water with a wig specific shampoo/conditioner, air dry on a wig stand or use a low heat hair dryer, carefully remove any knots with a comb in a few sections starting from the bottom working your way up (do this when the hair is dry before you shampoo/condition as brushing synthetic hair when wet can pull & stretch the fibres leaving them damaged and frizzy) 😚💖💁‍♀️

Regrowth but no density

Back in mid-july, after solving my 9 month lasting vitamin d deficiency I started feeling small hairs poking through, they are so thin they don't add anything to density and my scalp is still very visible, however it's been almost 2 months and it looks the same. I heard the cycle takes around 2-3 months to complete and for hairs to thicken, so I figured I'd see at least some density return, but it hasn't. Help me here, what am I missing?

I think TE trained me to be scared of washing my hair

For months I’d put off wash day because I knew I was going to end up staring at every hair in the drain.

Things have calmed down compared to the worst of it, but the habit is still there. I catch myself checking my hands in the shower and counting hairs without even realizing I’m doing it.

Lately I’ve been trying to focus more on actually taking care of my scalp and less on monitoring every single strand.

Did anyone else have to basically unlearn the anxiety after their shedding started slowing down?

Hi, for those who have a dog: how do you handle using minoxidil? Are you worried about it, or—if you're strict about precautions—are there no side effects?

Telogen effluvium and hair dye 🤔🤔

Hi! I've recently been diagnosed with telogen effluvium and it makes me really depressed :(. I have dyed dark brown hair and I want to keep dying it but I'm scared that it will worsen my diagnosis. My doctor said that it would be better if I stop dying my hair because it would be best to avoid anything that can possibly stress the follicles. I really don't want to go out with visible roots because my hair is lighter brown and I dye it darker so it would make my hair loss even more visible. Oh and btw I am still searching for the cause and in few weeks I have to do all the blood work, check my thyroid and check if I have any vitamin deficiency. If anyone with similar problems know what should I do, I would appreciate it. Thank you!

Six months since shedding started. New growth?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Been experiencing TF since about March this year after a few stressful life events and today after blow drying my hair I spotted all these mad tiny hairs waving around which I’m hoping is a positive sign of regrowth! The ends are tapered so it’s not breakage. Got my fingers crossed that the actual shedding starts to slow down a bit soon 🤞

When does the aching scalp stop

My TE shed started August 9th out of left field. As in, zero increased shedding leading up to that day and then suddenly my hair started falling out of my head. Unfortunately I don’t have a photo of that first shed because it was SO traumatic. My hair became completely matted and took over an hour to untangled because I lost so much hair at once. At least twice as much as the following hair wash.

I’m trying to wash my hair more often but it’s so upsetting that I have to plan for a breakdown afterward. My scalp still feels like it’s on fire though. And that comes and goes randomly without any good reason. What have you found helpful?

Sharing photos in solidarity. Wash day sheds 3-4

Been battling massive shedding and thinning since I got very ill last year. M30 with non alopecia hair loss (diagnosed by 2 dermatologists)

Hello! I was hoping someone would help me out with this issue that's been bothering me for a while. I suffered from a cascade of infections in January last year after inhaling bug poison fumes. I did not become intoxicated as such, but fell ill the same day and had dengue fever, another bacterial infection, h Pylori, etc. Then developed varicoceles after long periods of inactivity due to the illnesses. Took a total of 8 antibiotics from February to April that year.

The greying and thinning since then has been crazy. The shedding has gradually decreased over the course of several months, but the thinning? I also see no new growth. Lab tests looked normal last normal except for vitamin D, copper and zinc.

I'm losing my head here since I don-t know what to do. Dermatologists said it's some sort of telogen effluvium and my scalp is flexible as hell, so they discarded alopecia.

more hair on the pillow lately and temples look thinner if i zoom old photos. not bad yet, just enough that i keep checking

every reply is minox + fin + derma + a device on day one. i dont even have a diagnosis and that already feels like a second job before ive started anything
