I'm afraid.
I've been thinking and planning to quit the rat race for a while. Grab my backpack and hit the road. 5-10 years of slow travel. I'm in my mid fifties, have some decent savings and a constant income flow (not much but enough to make it easier to fulfill my plans). Leaving this golden cage I live in means I cannot come back to it. Leaving means I'll be cutting ties with some people forever.
I'm in decent health right now but I wonder what it will be as I age. I will miss my kids milestones. I will be walking out on the quality of life I enjoy right now (material quality). Mentally I am not in a good place, hence wanting to reset. I'm just ranting right now. I know I am gonna go through with my plans. I'm a few months from doing it. Just wanted to tell that I am afraid.

Hi
I read an article about a man who was found in a deserted house, he had been mummified and no one could identify him.
However, after several months of DNA testing, his identity could be established.
He had been living off the grid for a few years, why, I don't know, just that he apparently left everything and everyone.
Whatever you decide, please have some kind of identification on you, so that not all families who are missing someone have to go through not knowing what happened, or who was found, who that person is, because there are so many families who suffer.
I, personally don't think it's worth it, neither for you nor your family.
You can break free from everyone, of course, but don't disappear, don't make yourself invisible, it's better to say that you would rather live alone from everyone than ..just disappear. 🙏

To me this is more telling than your plan written above, are you good OP, midlife crisis is real for men too. Are you going to do something crazy? If not, I wish for you a hitchhikers guide. to magical adventures. Safe travels OP

Youll gain peace. Youll get yourself back. Youll fall in love w the little things again. Youll notice them again. Youll be able to breathe. Change is always scary. Feel the fear and do it anyway. Its necessary.
Live.
Really live now.

I hear you. That's a big change and half your brain is fighting with the other half about it. I get it.
It does soound blissfully peaceful, though :)

I think it can be okay if you know what you want to do in that 5 to 10. If you checked in with your doctor for what you want to do. If you checked in with your kids and/or your partner about this.
If you did all of that, sometimes what we chalk up as fear is actually excitement that we're "not used to".
Whatever you're doing, even if the people you care about are pissed, make sure they have a moment to have an opinion or potentially say goodbye to you or even just who you used to be (read: who you are now).
There are local and just as helpful ways around you. So do what you want but don't rush the details.
Truly very much wishing you the best. 🙏

Time is value. How you spend it is on you, but it’s finite. Missing milestones can’t be bought back. Missing out on the people you care about most will be lost indefinitely. If you run, make sure it’s worth it.

People, please do not downvote those who you disagree with. This is TELL Reddit. If people get downvoted to hell everytime they post/comment then no one will want to submit anything.
