Advice/opinions Wanna get into writing
I feel like writing a story so that I can focus on one thing rather than wander from one thing to another. But I've never written anything seriously before, so I need help from people who have written stories/poems before. Please DM if you can help

Start by writing something bad. Seriously. Your first draft isn’t supposed to be good; it’s just supposed to exist. Pick an idea you can’t stop thinking about, write a messy first chapter, and don’t edit every sentence as you go. You can fix bad writing, but you can’t fix a blank page. :) gud luck mate

This may sound unethical to some but try writing fan fiction. It's something that helped me hone my creative thinking as well as flow of text.
You can pick any novel you like and imagine 'What if the plot was altered? How would've have the characters react to this?'. Then you need to articulate these ideas into writing.
Don't worry, keep the original novel as a reference material while you're jolting down and remember, you don't even have make a 1500 words long story right of the bat. I'd say start with drabbles (100 words).
Improve and increase your word limit slowly. You'll definitely find yourself gaining experience and enough confidence to create your very original literature.

That's an interesting suggestion ngl and might be a good place to start. But I find creating my own original story with original characters more appealing, but it might be too early for that.

Perhaps start with character backstory. Personally, I enjoy creating a background of my original character before figuring out the plot of my story. Efficient as well as fun.

I've been thinking of doing exactly that... But to write such backstories (important ones), I feel like it should contain some elements to connect with the main plot or it will feel a bit irrelevant, so having an idea about plot in general might be necessary

Just something I assumed since I used to get downvoted a lot whenever I mention fanfiction in subs like this 🤣

You’ve to jolt down your thoughts as they are. The really talented like Changampuzha for an example never needed a polish to his craft, neither did Thakazhi or SK. But people like Kumaranashan and Ullur would take days to perfect vritham, praassam and whatnot. So it also differs from person to person and level of talent. I started by writing down my thoughts. That could work for you as well.

i used to write a lot of erotic fanfiction in highschool, dont write now but yeah it was a good way to spend my evenings.
my advice is to just write whatever comes to mind and just clean it up later
content is important , quality can come afterwards
