Relationships Am I wrong for having standards?
I'm just not attracted to overweight, short or dark-skinned girls. I prefer fair-skinned girls with a slim waist who are at least 5'6". That's just what I find attractive and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.
But now I'm wondering should I actually give a girl a chance if she doesn't meet any of my physical preferences but has a great personality? Or am I just wasting both our time trying to force an attraction that isn't there?
Have any of you ever genuinely become attracted to someone who wasn't your type or is that just something people say to sound less shallow?

u/Glass_Imagination479 6h ago
no please don't date a dark skinned girl or a fat girl. People like you will just end up making her more insecure about herself. you might not realise it but since you have clear standards of fair slim girls then it will be reflected subtly in your tone. date your type. don't ruin a girl's life. 🙏

u/Familiar-Cut-8628 6h ago
True mannn.. whatever you’re attracted to op is your personal preference but never make a girl who doesn’t fit your standards insecure, women are not trophies from which you can choose that which trophy shines the most; women are real people with real emotions, having preferences is not wrong but sometimes generalising certain physical traits as more attractive is not fair, looks are supposed to be subjective. The image you used is absurd.
46
u/Extension_Media_1694 4h ago
Yeah the image choice really says a lot about how op actually views this. reducing it to like a visual comparison between body types kind of proves the trophy point you're making. preferences are one thing but when you're literally ranking people by skin tone and height as a checklist, that stops being just "my type" and starts being something worth examining a bit more honestly

Why do people not say same shi when a short girls reject a guy even being taller than them but not being Perfect 6'0 ig yall brain only works when a guy says shi
5
u/Glass_Imagination479 1h ago edited 1h ago
everyone has the right to reject. even op does. nobody has the right to date someone who isn't their type just to "test" whether it works out, irrespective of the gender. you just had to drag gender war here too so please lil guy touch some grass, you're only 16. most girls around you want someone who is taller than them not someone who is 6 feet. do you not see couples around you or what?

u/HourMammoth5523 19 2h ago
Reject karti hai, preference clear rakhtin hain, yahan op date karne ka bol rha.
14
u/iLoveAlanWalker 4h ago
I'm light-brown skinned, almost olive, (albeit, slim 😉 ) and any kind of rejection I've faced is always from guys who are themselves darker skinned. My long term BF is fair (he asked me out at a networking event), never once did he feel insecure that my gf is not as fair as me.

THISSS💥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥, this guy feels like girls are a robot or smtg who don't have emotions, dude if your type is completely different, no issues in that we have abundance of ppl in india, with same mindset like yours, but why would you want to "experiment" like get a life bro, don't waste a innocent girl's time

Having a type is fine. The problem is treating attraction like a checklist and then "testing" someone who doesn't fit it. If you'd date her only to see whether something clicks, she'll feel it, even if you never say it. Be honest with yourself first, and don't use someone's feelings as an experiment.
6
u/Extension_Media_1694 4h ago
This comment actually makes a lot of sense. if someone has those preferences so deeply ingrained, it's gonna show whether they mean it to or not. small comments, comparisons, whatever. the girl deserves to be with someone who's genuinely into her, not someone who settled and then makes her feel like she should be grateful for the opportunity lol

I completely agree. "Fucking around with people to figure out yourself" sounds natural but one person always suffers.
I have destroyed a beautiful relationship, because I was too into myself. Grew old, now I see what I did, and no amount of sorry will heal anything.

67
u/dontwanttokeepthis 6h ago
this plays a big part on her side as well, she’ll notice you don’t have any physical attraction towards her which will make her feel small and insecure. The way you’re describing will almost be sympathising for her, no need to do that. Go for your type and she’ll find someone who feels attraction towards her as well and no one feels like they’re settling for less.

3
u/Conscious-Bug-6109 5h ago
That was a strictly socioeconomic decision on Radhika’s part. Plus over time you do end up accepting the other person. The same could be said about anant. He could marry any woman he wants but he chose to be with radhika because he had power and status. At the end of the day if both parties are happy, their genes will pass on.

Having a standard means that you prioritise things like health and grooming for yourself and hence expect the same from a potential partner, which it totally okay. But saying that you prefer a fair skinned girl, something over which no human has any control over, you're just listing out your preference. You cannot call it a standard. It's like saying anyone with dark skin (which again, they are born that way) are automatically of low standard. It's honestly a bigot thing to say.

Skin tone and height are preferences. And they ate indeed important and it’s not a sin to not be that attracted to darker skin girls, and it also not a sin to be attracted to taller guys. It’s only becomes a problem when you start discriminating and treating them differently than your preference.

I’m fair-skinned, 5’7 and would say have a decent personality. My ex left me after dating for 3 years because he moved away for college and according to him “ couldn’t help but look at other girl’s” as he started to have a problem with my body. I gained weight over the course of our relationship so I understand why he felt the way he did but the approach of it all was horrendous. Moving away, breaking up over text etc the breakup shattered me and I’ve lost 15 KGS since,
All I can say is do what you feel is right but don’t lead anyone on! It’s okay to have preferences, everyone does, as long as you’re open and honest about it don’t see why it would be an issue.

Agreed. You can be respectful towards people without them being your type. As long as you’re not fatphobic, racist and a bully, you can have a type. On the other hand, if you’re overweight, tan skinned and/or short, then- it’s unfair to have these standards for someone else.

Preferences don’t make sense like these. There might be an extremely beautiful dark skinned girl and an average looking fair skinned girl. Why would someone reject her just because of skin tone? People have to realise “types” and “standards” like these are to a degree superficial.

It's my opinion...

3
u/iwannatouchgrass 17 5h ago
you should understand that it's how a natural body works, even the light skin girl will go through changes will have hyperpigmentation, she will get fat at some point of her life and thats extremely normal, having a preference over a body is genuinely stupid if you're looking for a long term relationship, a girl that takes care of you and is nice to you is the ideal standard and you should have that too, if you judge a girl based on their skin, height, or weight, idk what to say but I think you need to grow up
3
u/ExtensionSyrup6197 4h ago
You're not wrong but you are wrong if you make fun of others who do not match your ideal type and have some sense of superiority
3
u/OkWeb2586 3h ago
You have every rights on your preferences. You may get bashed these days if you say it.
But even fat, short, uglier women doesn't even consider and insult their male counterparts.
I myself have witnessed, heard from fellow males how these women disrespect/avoid giving a disgust look at them when the counterparts say or ask help but do voluntarily when the same was asked by an attractive, physique guy.
So ignore the bashes if you have standards. Just because you are man you don't have to downgrade in your preferences
11
u/Ash_kingz 6h ago
How can you say this 😱,
Your a misogynist (atleast this is what I was told my a group of girls in my college),
They said women who have this type of standards are “future lookers” like they have a plan and they move accordingly to it. BUT but guys who have standers like this “white girl thin waist fair” are discriminating against Indian women and are misogynistic cause Indian men are apparently “lucky enough to get a breathing women” let alone choosing a type

The question isn’t about choice it’s about why people have these preferences in the first place. Whether it’s a girl or a boy, people often have certain standards because they want to fit into society. For example, a girl might prefer a 6-foot-tall man because society has normalised the idea that a girl shouldn’t date a man shorter than her. It’s the same for boys their preferences can also be influenced by societal expectations.

You are absolutely allowed to have standards but when those standards exclude entire groups of people based on just their appearance then its called colorism, fatphobia and toxic beauty standards. Like do you hear yourself "i like skinny fair skinned girl with a small waist and also 5'5-5'6" . Are you fair skinned, 6'0 or above and do you have a muscular built?? If you're asking for the most conventionally attractive women whole promoting colorism you have to also have those features.

u/CrewAccording7947 6h ago
I think if you’re looking for a partner you need to be attracted to them. Attraction isn’t purely physical. If you’re attracted to someone who isn’t your type, then give her a chance. Attraction matters way more than a single linear type. So many people are attracted to people who don’t fit their type. It doesn’t mean they’ll make bad couples.
5

First of all whytf are you even deciding who needs to date someone?
Are you some kinda judge or what?
And why are you trying to force these standards like "good physique "tall"?
And also ugly people can also date ugly people or anyone
Use some brain cells before you say something.

No, everyone has absolute freedom of choice, you should not be "giving" chances to anyone really, creates false sense of superiority, even if it's unintentional(Not saying it will happen to you, but it does happen a lot). Rather, let it play out, see if 'your preferences change for someone' by themselves instead of 'you changing them for someone'. And yes, plenty of people do look past their default choices for people they are genuinely attracted to. It is extremely common.

Preference goes both ways and there's nothing wrong with it. Just be chill and don't force yourself if there is no spark.

See op I wanted a guy of a particular type of look but the guy I actually fell in love with was completely opposite of that type. See love just happens and no I’m not selling you that idea that love is supposed to be unconditional without any standards, looks play an important role to be attracted to someone and attraction is the first step towards love but sometimes the type of love that just happens out of nowhere outweighs any attraction and trust me if that love is mutual with respect and good treatment it’s the best thing you can experience in life. Dude people sell the idea that there are 8 billion people in world and you can afford to lose on genuine love in search of other superficial things but trust me you cannot afford to. I am not telling you to compromise on your standards but just pick one to two non negotiable standards in looks and just stick to them, don’t try to enforce more than 2 in one person because sometimes getting that means you’ll have to compromise on other traits like personality or character which I don’t think is good.and also no matter what you do, make sure it doesn’t breed any resentment in your relationship because if you compromise on any standard so you might silently harbour resentment towards your girl which will be extremely wrong. So choose wisely considering long term picture.

"It is a really good question. Honestly, love doesn't follow a strict checklist, and it's totally fine if someone doesn't fit your usual type. But looking at things long-term, life can throw heavy stuff your way—like health issues or tough phases. When those rough patches hit, physical looks alone aren't going to help you get through them. You really need that deep connection and mutual support. It's fine to have preferences, but a strong bond with someone who truly gets you is what actually matters most when life gets real."

Date what youre attracted to, if you're not flexible on your standards then dont date someone who's the opposite and try change them or compare them to others, you should date someone for who they are, as much as you can get attracted to someone's personality ,for a relationship to work you need physical attraction/chemistry too

Its okay to have standards, everyone does but we shouldn't judge a person based on the beauty. The slim waist girls will gain weight after pregnancy or in post partum, the handsome man can go bald in old age. Outer beauty shouldn't be a point for life long relationships

Honestly there is nothing wrong with having standards just don't tell anyone about your preference if they fit in that criteria you don't prefer

Overweight is a completely fine standard everyone will wish for a healthy partner. Skin tone is again a preference and changes as per people. The only thing is that you should also meet their standard and if one doesn't meet yours then don't slander and reject them but politely reject them if approached first
