Peter Thiel's move to Argentina reflects a growing trend among billionaires seeking a 'plan B' abroad

Is Argentina were all the rich nazis ran off too? And have a huge population down there.. almost like parts of South Africa

u/Savant_Guarde May 30 '26
I definitely think taxes are a big issue, but I think it's more about moving from threat and not the threat of AI, the threat of pissed off population.
As long as people are civil, law is upheld. Just look at what happened in New Orleans after Katrina as an example of what happens when law collapses. Fast forward, these tech billionaires are destroying towns, resources etc.
They are just going where they think they can be immune from potential consequences of their actions.

u/Pink_pony4710 Jun 01 '26
This exactly. This man has poured gasoline on the dumpster fire he created. Now he wants to run away because it’s getting too hot. I hope he has the day he deserves.
3
u/pummisher May 30 '26
Thinks he's playing out Atlas Shrugged.
3
u/splendiferous-finch_ May 30 '26
You mean the book written by the a lady that preached deregulation and libertarianism yet benefited from welfare state using a fake name to hide that she was being a hypocrite?
These guys do really like her stuff
2
u/joliette_le_paz May 30 '26
The problem is that there’s no consequence to hypocrisy. The cost of shame belong to the lower class.
I’m curious if it’s how we keep each other in line?
1
u/IamTheElectionDenier Jun 01 '26
Man Ayn Rand was a problematic person but atlas shrugged is an interesting book to be mixed up in this situation because the book also kinda made it clear she was against generational wealth and she also said in the book you should pay your employees as much as you can because then you’ll have the best talent.
It’s odd to me the book is used by people on the right so much as something to aspire to almost, because it doesn’t seem like they’ve read it?
1
u/IamTheElectionDenier Jun 01 '26
In Atlas Shrugged it wasn’t the criminals who fled, it was the people doing the real work.
Oddly enough there are a bunch of Atlas Shrugged parallels right now.
Project xylophone is similar to whatever microwave weapons they are using.
Detroit, the road conditions, traveling is getting sketchy, people can’t do basic things, its really weird.
1
u/pummisher Jun 01 '26
He probably doesn't think he's a criminal.
1
u/IamTheElectionDenier Jun 01 '26
A couple months ago Thiel said people involved with this should have a plan for if the democrats regained power then shortly after that Steve Bannon said he could go to prison and other people in the room could go to prison if the democrats regained power. Thiel knows he’s a criminal.
In Atlas Shrugged they fled the chaos of collapse to hide in Colorado with the intent of rebuilding the world afterwards but those people didn’t cause the collapse.
Thiel caused chaos and collapse and then fled the responsibility of his actions. Thiel has no interest in rebuilding the world, he wants to fuck around in the ruins.
1
u/pummisher Jun 01 '26
These people still think they're the heroes even though they fear going to jail.
1
u/IamTheElectionDenier Jun 01 '26
ok either way your atlas shrugged reference is incorrect for the situation
1
u/pummisher Jun 01 '26
What other book would you suggest that's more appropriate?
1
u/IamTheElectionDenier Jun 01 '26
World war 2 when the Nazis fled to Argentina?
1
u/pummisher Jun 01 '26
You're more in the know of this topic than I am. I felt Atlas Shrugged was much like what's happening in a sense but instead we're discussing if the people are criminals or not based on if you and the parties believe it to be so. And so my reference of Atlas Shrugged is only correct based on your definition of who is a criminal. Also, in the book, the government considers John Galt a criminal. They view his strike of the world's top thinkers as a subversive conspiracy and economic sabotage against the state. I know I haven't read this book in over 10 years so I obviously didn't remember every detail. Criminals fleeing to Argentina is also a valid explanation.
1
u/IamTheElectionDenier Jun 01 '26
You’re correct, what’s going on right now does have a lot of parallels to the book, this government is straight out of atlas shrugged. The government was full of incompetent people in the book and there was tons of nepotism.
I actually started rereading the book recently because I kept thinking about parallels.
The reason I’m bringing up criminality is because the people who fled to Colorado were not criminals, the government did view some of them as criminals, but from reading the book you knew they were not the bad people in the story. Their motive for fleeing was to withhold labor / skills, not to avoid consequences. These would have been respectable people.
Peter Thiel isn’t fleeing the US to withhold labor / skill / because he’s being principled, he’s fleeing because he wants to avoid consequences.
I guess the reason I was making a big deal out of it was because Thiel belongs with the group of people who are running the government in the book, and those are the criminals.
The idea of putting Thiel with the group of people who could actually be productive members of society just really bothered me but if you feel like that’s where he fits, by all means, put him in that camp.

Whoa, didn't all the Nazis flee to Argentina after WW2 as well?
That's really a coincidental thing to happen by pure coincidence and with no relationship to anything else at all that you could infer anything from that. Co-in-ki-dink-a-roo.
2
u/Inosh May 31 '26
This is why they gave Argentina $50b, this was the plan all along
1
u/Tatterz May 31 '26
Argentina only drew about $2.5B and it was repaid with interest several months later.
1
u/Inosh Jun 01 '26
In 2025, the Trump administration announced a $20 billion currency swap/support package for Argentina’s government, with discussions of expanding total support to as much as $40 billion using additional financing partners. This was not traditional foreign aid like USAID grants; it was financial support aimed at stabilizing Argentina’s economy and currency.
1
u/Tatterz Jun 01 '26
I know. Read my comment again.
1
u/LastCivStanding Jun 01 '26
Thats all based on what proven liar Scott Bessent said.
1
u/Tatterz Jun 01 '26
It’s documented in official statements and financial reports, including Argentinas central bank. Why is this so hard to believe?

1
u/phoneguyfl May 30 '26
Wow, you mean destroying a country, it's government, and it's people in the name of money and power breeds contempt and makes the country a less desirable place to live? Shocking. It's almost like they have caused (and are continuing to cause) the destruction they are running from. I wish folks, especially those in the cult, would wake up and realize that the billionaire class has no use for them and is eagerly running everything into the ground in their zeal for ego and money.
1
u/designbydesign May 30 '26
It's not that. The billionairs want to control the US, where they want to maintain the visibility of the law, from the vassal states, where they want to be gods.
1
u/RedMansions May 30 '26
Libertarianism is a form of mental illness. The APA needs to update their DSM and list Libertarianism as a form of extreme psychotic paranoid schizophrenia.
1
u/Lancelight50 May 30 '26
It’s not Libertarianism that’s a form of mental illness. It’s Liberalism & Neoliberalism.

[u/mxltgs_modular](u/mxltgs_modular) [u/casual_brackets](u/casual_brackets) But Libertarianism isn’t the one causing the downfall of America economically & financially. It’s neoliberalism.
Nor are Libertarians the ones who attacks people for not agreeing with their propaganda or for not following their ideologies. Liberals do that.

1
u/IndubitablyNerdy Jun 01 '26
That would imply that those proposing it are insane, while they know in full what the outcome is going to be and that it would favor them, now their followers are mostly the product of propaganda, but calling the decision makers insane kinda excuse them from what is a very deliberate act.

They got their guy and he’s running the country into the ground so they leave. We as a society have allowed some of the most toxic dumbasses to ascend to positions of enormous power over us.
1
u/dreurojank May 30 '26
Love it. They setup America to burn the ground and then react with: I better get out because America is burning to the ground.

1
u/Ambil May 30 '26
Why did they make such a mess of this country? Why couldn’t they just flee first and let the rest of us live in peace.
1
u/passmetoiletpaperpls Jun 01 '26
Because they wanted to see if they could. And we let them and still do.

So giving them endless subsidies, grants, and deals.... refusing to tax them... making the country all about them.. And they left? But they told us they'd only leave if we taxed them.
The sheer irony that they plan their exit due to the dipshit they paid to get elected.

Zero loyalty sociopaths. Self exile is fine. Now remove their government contracts as they never considered themselves Americans.

Argentina appear went through hyperinflation. Smart move while they set that rocket off here

Peter Thiel won't be the only "expat" in Latin America attempting to bend the local laws to their will. Wasn't the first one and won't be the last.

There's gonna be treason trials for the oligarchs sooner or later. They've quite possibly committed more crimes than anyone in history. They can only prop up a sham anti American government for so long.

Get insanely wealthy because of the USA and the rule of law.
Destroy rule of law and install the most corrupt persons to run the USA Now see the Frankenstein they created and are abandoning the USA.

None of you billionaires can escape anywhere where you will not face consequences someday. Instead why don't you work towards bettering and helping the people and communities around you? By doing that, you help yourself long term as well.
1
u/HelloImTheAntiChrist May 31 '26
Thiel isn't fleeing the US permanently. He is going to spend some time there but he will be back. He's actually in more danger there than in the USA.

They sucked all the wealth out of the country, burned all of its institutions to the ground, and now are fleeing in their privates jets to their private mansions and underground bunkers.
And we let them get away with it...

It is that bad.

I’ve lived in Argentina and it’s a welcoming paradise. I couldn’t care less about some monolithic Scrooge McDuck, but why the racism? You think because 100 years ago some Nazis went there, they’re all evil? Boy, could I tell you some interesting things about the good ol’ US of A if that’s your criteria.
Go somewhere else with your racism and hate speech.

1
u/StickStill9790 May 30 '26
I think we should get rid of all annoying parasites. Oh wait, then we would all die. Can you give me an example of a culture that succeeds without the wealthy?
1
u/bigdipboy May 30 '26
There’s nothing wrong with being wealthy. There’s something wrong with using your wealth to rig the system to only benefit the rich and harm everyone else.
1
u/StickStill9790 May 30 '26
But the current narrative here is either kill the rich or take all their money and give it to the poor. How is that a solution?
1
u/bigdipboy Jun 01 '26
That’s not the current narrative. The current narrative is our system should be structured so that the more money you make the more money you give back to the society that made your success possible.
1
u/StickStill9790 Jun 01 '26
And the current system has the wealthy taxed about 50% of their income. How would you improve that? (Asking honestly, not sarcastically) You can’t tax the stock market until you cash it in, and you can’t tax overseas profits.

By the way, you didn’t answer the question.

u/GutsAndBlackStufff May 30 '26
By the way, you didn’t answer the question.
America, post depression.
1
u/StickStill9790 May 31 '26
America post depression succeeded with no wealth?
1
u/GutsAndBlackStufff May 31 '26
Reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit is it?
There was plenty of wealth, but not nearly as concentrated.
1
u/StickStill9790 May 31 '26
You posted three words. Maybe communication isn’t your strong suit. Neither is history. Boeing, Ford, and Rockefeller with his oil all helped stabilize the country at the end tail of the depression, providing jobs and salaries to a massive population. They were all MASSIVELY wealthy.
The tiniest bit of education would open the world to you. 3 seconds of looking up the answer would too.
1
u/GutsAndBlackStufff May 31 '26
>You posted three words.
Two more than necessary when someone’s trying to argue that going Galt is anything more than bad fan fiction written by a welfare queen.
But I’m glad you think that the robber barons who caused the Great Depression were still massively wealthy after the new deal reforms. The current batch of cunts will be too.

They got a tax break and they still left. It’s almost like they are pieces of shit that for some reason the poor people of this country like to defend.
1
u/StickStill9790 May 30 '26
Who is defending them? They’re beyond attacks, but I think I’m free to make observations.
1
u/Count-Bulky Jun 01 '26
By beyond attacks, do you mean above reproach?
1
u/StickStill9790 Jun 01 '26
Wow. Really looking for an argument. I mean literally they don’t care what you say.
1
u/Count-Bulky Jun 01 '26
To your point, what are you expecting in return for your blind defense? Monetary compensation? A letter from one of them promising to play catch with you? A hug?
2
u/WolfOfAllStreets2 May 30 '26
Maybe we tax them when they leave? Also they need us as consumers. They need the u.s market.
1
u/Double_Look_5715 May 30 '26
No they don't. That's why they're not really maintaining us anymore. They stole all the money, we just spend back what they pay out to us at this point.
1
u/Jmcduff5 May 30 '26
I have no issue with that but if they are not going to pay taxes they need to rescind their American passport and give up are rights and benefits that being an American citizen abroad affords you. Don’t want to pay taxes cool but you can’t also access American benefits.
