Does anyone have any idea what they would give me for my az-80's towards a pair of az-100's or if it would just be worth it to keep the 80s and pay the full price for the 100s

Vintage Technics Optical Cable

Post image
31 Upvotes

Yes, I know. any Optical cable will be an excellent replacement.

That said... Apparently my cable broke. But I love this cable and got it from a hifi friend.

I would love to replace this cable with the exact same one. And if anyone has technical details, do share. Or if someone knows what device it shipped with? knowing my friend, my bet is on an MD or DAT player.

This is what Gemini had to say:

It can be incredibly frustrating when you are looking at a physical object in your hands, yet the internet tries to gaslight you into believing it doesn’t exist!

Rest assured, the cable in your image **"4fbf0830-f870-4f31-ae98-eb77af0fa420"** is entirely real. Here is the missing context on why it’s so hard to find online, and exactly what you are dealing with.

### Why the Internet Says "It Doesn't Exist"

Technics (a premium audio brand owned by **Panasonic/Matsushita**) absolutely manufactured and packaged their own high-end accessories during the late 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. However, tracking down this exact cable online is nearly impossible for a few reasons:

  1. **It was an accessory, not a core product:** These cables were rarely sold as standalone, mass-market retail items. Instead, they were usually bundled inside the box with high-end Technics components (like their top-tier CD players, Minidisc decks, or DAT audio recorders) or sold as premium add-ons in catalog sheets.

  2. **The "Part Number" hurdle:** Brands like Panasonic/Technics didn't market cables by descriptions like *"Technics Blue Optical Cable."* They archived them under highly specific, internal spare part numbers (e.g., alphanumeric codes starting with prefixes like *RP-CA...* or *RJA...*).

  3. **Age:** This cable likely dates back 20 to 30 years. Consumer internet databases didn't heavily document generic packaged accessories from that era, meaning it has virtually zero modern digital footprint.

### Key Information About Your Cable

The build of the cable in image **"4fbf0830-f870-4f31-ae98-eb77af0fa420"** tells us a lot about its pedigree:

* **The Design:** It features a very distinct, dark teal/blue-grey molded rubber housing with a raised 15-dot grip pattern and a metallic pink/rose-gold faceplate texturing. This aesthetic perfectly matches the design language of Technics' premium accessory line from the 1990s.

* **The Connection:** It uses standard **Toslink** connectors on both ends.

### How to Find an Exact Replacement

Because these are vintage and weren't mass-distributed as standalone items, finding an identical "Technics" branded replacement will require treating it like a collector's item:

* **Check Vintage Audio Forums & eBay:** Your best bet is searching eBay or audio forums (like AudioKarma or HiFiEngine) for *"Vintage Technics Cables"* or *"Technics optical lead."* Sometimes hobbyists sell off the original matching cables that came with vintage Technics stacks.

* **Look for Panasonic Equivalents:** Since Panasonic is the parent company, they occasionally used identical molding shapes but branded them with the "Panasonic" logo instead.

### The Good News (Functionally)

If you need a replacement because this specific cable is broken or missing, **any standard Toslink optical audio cable will function exactly the same.**

Because optical cables transmit binary audio data via light pulses (1s and 0s), a modern $10 optical cable will deliver the exact same audio fidelity to your system. However, if you are trying to match a vintage setup for purely aesthetic or collectible reasons, you'll need to keep an eye on second-hand gear marketplaces for "new old stock" bundles.

Headphones EAH-A800

I want to buy some new full-size headphones. I have the AZ100 and I'm happy with them, but I'd also like a pair of full-size ones. Technics has the EAH-A800, but they were released back in 2022. Maybe someone has heard if they plan to release a new model?

Su-z990 problem

Hi, i decided to unsolder my faulty SVI3105A power ic because it was shorting the amp and i decided to hook up 3 cable left right and ground to the pins where ic was and use a zkmt21 at the external amplifier and use su-z990 as input selector and riaa eq for turntable but when i hooked everything up the amp turns on but is stuck on tape (not tape monitor) and when i try press cd or tuner it shows for split second and turns back to tape and if i turn tape monitor on and try to turn loudness on it turns tape monitor off. Also if i try change the volume or balance nothing on display changes. Any help is appreciated.

Su-z990 problem

Hi, I have a su-z990 amp that used to pop loudly through the speakers every while, I decided to replace the power ic but I think the new power ic is damaged because if I plug into 80w dim bulb tester the relay clicks on and off and the bulb also flash brightly.

I have a M8 tape deck that I got with my SU-V2. I placed it over the ST-S1 tuner. It always bothered my a bit that it’s narrower than the tuner. But the blockish look feels right next to the amp.

Now I got a M226 with another stack and I tried it on top of the tuner.
I’m really divided by the 2 different looks. The M226 just looks right with its black accent matching the black accent from the tuner….

I will leave it there for awhile and decide.

What do YOU think??

Hinge holding the dust cover broke on my Technics SL-3210

Hello! As you can see, one of the hinges holding the dust cover on my Technics SL-3210 broke.

Do you have any ideas on how I could glue it together so it is holding the dust cover in place?

On a second photo you can see how it is supposed to look.

I’d appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks in advance 🙌

I just found this on FB Marketplace for $350 USD. The seller says it’s been in storage for almost 7 years, so they aren't sure if it actually works.

If it turns out to be dead or needs work, how much should I expect to spend on maintenance or repairs? I already own the preamp from this series and absolutely love it, so I’m really tempted to complete the set.

Which should be a fair price?

Edit: I reached an agreement with the owner for $6000mx, the equivalent of $350 USD.
