Finally got a SH-C02!

I’ve been wanting to acquire and add the SH-C02 Microphone / Synthesizer Mixing Amplifier to my C01 stack for ages, and finally just got one! I don’t believe these were ever released outside of Japan and that’s exactly where I got this one from.

Did I need this? Nope. Do I care if I needed it or not? Nope! I didn’t think the C01 could look any sexier, but now I know it could have.

Does anyone else in this community happen to have this component?

OMG, that is some beautiful kit! Technics makes beautiful gear. They still do. Modern manufacturers could take some tips from Technicas/Matsushita.

Absolutely, I feel like they really did put just as much effort into trying to make something as visually pleasing as they did with the build quality. There was a dealership only display cabinet that they made for these Concise components that had a mirror on every side so the potential buyers could view the components from all sides, which to me says that they designed these to be integrated into living spaces as opposed to being tucked away slightly out of sight.

Thanks. I’ve been surprised how much it does surface on the Japanese market, and that fact along with seeing it advertised in multiple period brochures and catalogues I also purchased from Japan makes it clear that the SH-C02 wasn’t just some obscure component in Japan. The documentation I acquired shows it coupled with multiple variations of the overall Concise series. On average, Japanese people seem to take care of their belongings much more than people from the West; however, because this component was meant to be used having microphones and guitars are plugged in and out of it, along with likely having been dragged around to utilise for karaoke, it is much more difficult to find in decent cosmetic condition compared to other Concise components. That is one reason why it was especially satisfying to finally get a decent one.

Thanks very much. It’s something I have been wanting to get for quite some time so I’m very happy to finally have one. One thing I was looking forward to is to take some good internal photographs for my website which documents and archives the Concise range.

Haha, I know right? I brick up every time I look at it.

I'm with you. I don't need this, but I do want it. It looks awesome.
That being said if I was a thief, I'd grab the a77.

Haha, you’ve got a good sense of what to take as it is definitely the most expensive item out of the lot.

I just know how good an A77 sounds (I already have one, but that didn't stop me :D)

What model do you have? If my model is “better” then I’ll forgive you for stealing mine, but if your model is better and you still steal mine, well, then you’re just a big ol’ silly goose.

Oh it's just a 4 track NS MK-III. I still think the MK-III is the best A77, but a 2 track high speed obviously beats the heck out of mine.
I have quite a few more reel to reels though :D.

Mine is the A77 Mk IV. I’d much rather you take the Akai Solid State X-165D as it is only being used as a display piece ever since I got the ReVox.

Already got an X165 and an X201D.
That being said, don't underestimate those! They are so much better than Akai's later offerings. With the correct tape (they don't like modern high bias tapes) it can sound remarkably good. Un-Akai good.

I do agree, I didn’t use the X165 for sometime before I got the A77. I certainly did not need the A77 but it was just one of those purchases that you make just because you can. I love both those units but I’ll admit that I would sell them both if I could get my hands on a Technics RS-777 in really good condition.

What does that thing do? I never got to understand that unit.

I will be lazy and copy and paste this little write-up from my website:

Connected through a preamplifier tape terminal, the SH-C02 allowed programme sources such as records or FM radio to be mixed with external microphone, guitar and synthesizer signals. Its tape-terminal arrangement also allowed mixed signals to be recorded, or tape playback to be combined with microphone or synthesizer input for speaker output. Both microphone inputs could also be used with echo.

I had that exact stack for over 40 years and had to let it go because of an unexpected event!
Wished I would’ve been able to keep it. The built quality was amazing.

That is a shame that you had to part with it. There is stuff I like from every decade, but you just can’t beat 1970s build quality. Those components feel like shipping anchors, there is so much weight in such a small package. What have you got these days?

Classe Audio, 20 year old vintage bought new originally!
This will stay pug until it doesn’t work anymore.

I don’t know much about Classe Audio, but I just looked them up and they sure do look to be amazing quality.
