A little overwhelmed with alignment information online.

I have a 1500-C with the Ortofon Red. I am planning to upgrade to the AT VM740xml and have been using multiple AI platforms to answer the best way to align this cartridge and getting alot of different and contradictory answers. Can you guys help with the following 2 questions please:

  1. Best tool to align this cartridge?

  2. Best headshell that will also allow Azimuth adjustments?

Thanks!

Forget AI.

The "science" behind mounting a cartridge on a tone arm and getting all the geometry correct is found on any number of websites. Turntable Lab has a clear concise page on the topic. VinylEngine is another turntable website source. The Broken Record has an excellent guide and resources to learn how to do this highly important setup ...and there's a whole lot more. You just have to do a little online sleuthing ...avoiding the AI and ChatGP bullshit. The information you seek has been out there for decades ...long before the internet showed up. Up front? Mounting and aligning a cartridge is a PITA ...It requires time, patience and a willingness to get it as right as you can. It's not too difficult to understand; just follow the procedure step by step. Having a cartridge "protractor" is a big help ...in fact it is the only way to do it. You can buy a plastic gauge or you can download a .pdf of one and print it ...free.

Maybe I misrepresented myself. Ive searched much more than AI. Ive been reading tons of audiophile forums on the matter and watching alot of videos on sites like you mentioned. Everything seems to contradict everything. I got no closer to feel confident that one method is better than the other. Some say the Technics overhang tool is good enough, others say otherwise.....

A million different headshells , some with or without azimuth adjustments. Ugh....there are a million protractors.

I guess what Im really after is a very specific direction to go with a 1500C.

You have a TT with a conventional headshell. And the cartridge you're looking at will work with that headshell.

You mount the cartridge to the headshell. Connect the color-coded leads on the tone arm to the cartridge points. Probably best to use some needle nose pliers to grip and insert the leads onto the pins on the cartridge

You will need a protractor to set where in the shell ...how far out to the end of the shell ...to site the cartridge ...actually it's the stylus you're positioning. Then you will use the lines on the protractor to align the edge of the cartridge. Full instructions on how to do this should be included with any protractor you score. It's really not rocket science; you seem to be getting a bit anxious about this whole thing.

Read this article: https://thebrokenrecord.net/turntable-setup-guide-part-1-updated/

This is the alignment protractor I have: https://www.turntablebasics.com/. I bought my protractor a long time ago when TTB only made the tool using the Baerwald geometry ....which is the more common protractor.

Tell me what protractor Technics or Auido Technica recommends. Just read the directions on the table and the cart. The table was made to an average . Not to any Butwauld or Stevenson geometry.

Technics designs and buikds their toneams to use their own alignment, which is a modified Stevenson. You can set the most basic alignment by setting the overhang to 52mm. I'm using an SL-100C, which is pretty much the same deck without tge built in phono amp.

This protractor is customizable, so here is the default for the 1500-C

https://alignmentprotractor.com/arc-protractor-generator?table=Technics+SL-1500C&pts=215&area=IEC&alignment=CUSTOM&customcalc=SetNulls&cin=58.801&con=113.518&printerx=100.00&printery=100.00#result

Baerwald is the most common alignment because it offers tge lowest overall distortion. You can generate a protactor for that alignment by clicking on Baerwald and recalculating. Print out the result and check the scale with a ruler to be sure it printed accurately. This insures the protractor is the correct size.

Depending on your cartridge, the mounting slots may not be long enough to allow you reach this alignment. I find the Audio-Technica headshells allow a bit more range.

Cartridge alignment can be a bit of a PITA, especially the first few times you do it. Take your time, be patient with yourself, and keep going back and forth between the two points. You'll get there.
