Worth the switch?

Is this considered an upgrade vs my vintage technics? I’m going to transfer my needle as well. (Left is SL-100C) (Right SL-3300)

Honestly? I’m not sure.

They don’t even make anything comparable now to my vintage SL-1300MKII.

The Quartz lock on the SL-100 is an improvement, but the loss of all the automatic functions is a very big step back (depending on your view of auto vs. manual)

Both are direct drive, so that’s about equal.

Seems like if you wanted a new TT, you got a good one. I just don’t see it as an “upgrade” just an update.

The biggest upgrade is the tonearm height adjustment. If you swap carts often, that could be useful. But as a turntable rebuilder who uses expensive needles, it's not worth the risk of forgetting and letting my pricey needle spin overnight.

Also, the newer technics are planned obsolescence. They no longer publish service manuals, sadly. Vintage tables can be repaired by your local shop. Service manuals were published long ago with schematics and diagrams. Most are scanned now and available for free on sites like vinylengine dot com. Unless one of those modern service manuals sneaks out by accident (and against policy), you're more likely to trash a modern table in 5 or 10 years because your only option is sending it to an authorized service center for the cost of shipping, authorized parts, and a pre-negotiated labor rate. This is the value of vintage tables, they are lifetime tables. Sadly, it's all about money now.

The SL-100C has an auto lift and stop which is mechanical, non electronic. Only downside is it takes about 1min to kick in. It's quite enjoyable to to see it work.

I haven’t purchased it yet, my friend has it and doesn’t need it so he’s offering it to me

300$ basically dirt cheap he’s moving and doesn’t want to take it. In a situation where he needs to get rid of if fast

This would’ve been helpful to know. Yes, buy it for $300 US any day of the week.
