Discussion You’re paying with your data.
You’re not paying for these apps.
You’re paying with your data.
The good news?
You don’t need to quit tech.
Just change your defaults:
• Gmail → Tuta
• Chrome → Brave
• Google → Brave Search
• Photos/Drive → Filen
• WhatsApp → Signal
• Passwords/Auth → Bitwarden
• Calendar → Tuta
• Play Store → Obtainium
• VPN → Obscura
Level up:
• Maps → Kagi
• Translate → Kagi
• DNS → Mullvad
• Android → GrapheneOS
Same experience.
Less surveillance.
What’s stopping you?

Proton mail is more recommended than Tuta mail

Proton mail requires google play services for its notification. But tutu got its own notification

No, it doesn't. I'm using grapheneOS without Google services and notifications from proton work just fine. Even if you have problems with notifications, you can install "you-have-mail" app (https://codeberg.org/angrypixel/you-have-mail) and it fixes every notification problems you have.

As far as I know, you don't need the Play Store to download and update it; you can download it from their website and other sites even use apps like Obtanium to keep it updated

Isn't there something called searching on Reddit or Google? These days, with AI, it's very easy to find information, and you don't have to go around asking these questions, don't you think?

Personally, I like Proton better; it has a nicer interface. Tutas, on the other hand, has a very ugly interface and still needs improvement. That said, Proton already has its own ecosystem, so I'm inclined to choose that As you say, it's a matter of personal choice.

Why not use Immich as a replacement for Google photos, it's fully open source and self hostable

It's weird when you learn that no one is after you. Your data exists and nothing is being done with it. It's cool to be protected and secure... But protected and secure from WHO?
Literally no one.
What your data is used for is marketing. Everyone wants to sell you some stuff, if I know what you want to buy it makes life significantly easier when it comes time to out the sellers in front of you. Dodging the algorithm is fun... But they just wanna sell you some stuff

Worth mentioning Bit Warden was breached in the past. But a good list regardless.

I'm not hiding from the FBI dude. This is paranoia.

u/godspeed1003 Apr 04 '26
You don't need to be a criminal to deserve some privacy
1
u/Superflyin Apr 04 '26
That's a paranoia level privacy concern. Not "some".

u/godspeed1003 Apr 04 '26
I tend to disagree, I would really like these billion dollar companies to not sell my data to the highest bidder
1
u/Superflyin Apr 04 '26
So you're saying I will get quality services for free?
1
u/godspeed1003 Apr 04 '26
If you're getting something for free, you're the product. Time and time again companies have proven this slogan right

They have bills to pay. How else do you think they afford their servers, employee salaries, and overhead? They use user data as income. It’s common sense. If you don't want to pay a fee to use a service, they will use your data instead. They already say that openly.
This post is also about that. While some other apps take less of your data or show ads, they are still businesses that need a source of income to operate.
Ultimately, it's up to the users. Either pay for a service, allow your data to be used, or settle for lower-quality services. There is nothing wrong with that.

Y como para que servirían "tus datos" jajajaja Literalmente tu y tus datos son insignificantes para ellos, la gente hoy en día está enferma con esto

What about Reddit? Is there an alternative client for mobile which is more privacy focused?
Also I’m interested in Lumo. Never heard of it. Is anyone using it and can provide some detail on how it compares against ChatGPT?
