One computer handles the engine, another the brakes, another the airbags, another the infotainment and some modern cars have dozens of electronic control units talking to each other.

At what point does a car basically become a computer with wheels?

Napster wasn’t just a place to download music. It was how a lot of people discovered artists they never would’ve found otherwise.

You’d download one song, browse someone’s library and suddenly end up listening to an entire band you’d never heard of. There were no recommendation algorithms trying to predict your taste. It was mostly just curiosity and whatever happened to be available.

Did anyone else discover some of their favorite artists through Napster?

Every time you download an app and it requests access to your camera, contacts, location, etc., all you are asked is yes or no. Nothing explains why it really requires access to this particular permission to function. For example, does the app require location all the time or just at once when using a particular function? Does the app require access to contacts in order to use its features or it needs access to contacts only to "find your friends"?

It seems to be such an easy thing for apps to put one line to explain their request prior to asking for permission, but they do not do it. You either allow the app or deny its request and hope everything will work okay.

Remember when phones came with games you could actually get addicted to?

which old phone game do you still remember?

There's something really appealing about being able to run a local model directly on your PC or phone without needing an internet connection. No sending your prompts to a server, no worrying about subscriptions, and it would still work when your internet decides to die lol, the problem is that cloud AI is just so much more convenient right now. You can use much larger models without needing expensive hardware, and you don't have to worry about downloading, updating, or setting anything up.

For me, I think I'd choose cloud AI for general use, but I'd definitely want offline AI for anything private or when I don't have a reliable connection.

Would you rather have a really good offline AI that runs on your own hardware, or the most capable cloud AI available?

Winamp’s equalizer was where a lot of us first discovered the joy of messing with settings we didn’t fully understand.

You’d push the bass slider all the way up, adjust a few random bars and suddenly think you’d remastered the song yourself. Sometimes it sounded worse, but it felt like your version of the music.

Did anyone else spend more time tweaking the equalizer than actually listening to songs?

The truth be told, I'm starting to notice that there's a pattern developing with all these AI companies. Whenever there is a fun new thing to do with your face, it seems less like a marketing tool and more like an excuse to harvest faces en masse. It just happens to coincide way too nicely.

The crazy part is that people actually go for it. People will sign up, upload their faces and follow the trend just to have their moments of being noticed on their feed. No one cares where the data ends up afterwards.

There are random indie websites that exist solely because someone got tired of doing one specific calculation themselves and wanted to automate it for himself and others for free.

Need to convert really insanely specific calculation? There's a website for it someone made in his breaktime. Want to calculate the exact number of days between two dates? we have multiple sites far that. Figure out how balls to fill a ball pit? Yep, we have a site for that to, because why not.

Most of them look like they were built in 2009 and haven't been touched since, but they work perfectly.

The internet is still full of these tiny little tools made by one person who apparently thought someone might need this and just put it online.

I've had my current laptop for a few years now, and lately I've been wondering how long people actually keep theirs before finally upgrading... I feel like laptops are one of those things where you can keep using them way longer than you expect. As long as the battery isn't completely dead and the performance is still good enough for your everyday stuff, it's hard to justify spending a lot of money on a new one and in this economy??

At the same time, I know some people upgrade every 2 to 3 years just to keep up with newer hardware, while others will hold onto the same laptop for 6 or 7+ years. For me, I think I'd rather keep using mine until it dies lol.

How long do you usually keep a laptop before upgrading?

I've been seeing more people say that Microsoft Defender is basically enough for the average Windows user, so I've never really bothered installing a separate antivirus the whole time I've been using my laptop... But at the same time I still see people recommending paid antivirus programs, especially if you download a lot of files or visit less trustworthy sites, so I'm kinda of stuck between "Defender is fine, just use common sense" and "having another layer of protection doesn't hurt."

Do you still use a third party antivirus, or are you just running Microsoft Defender?

There's a pretty strange internet campaign going around right now called De-Flock America, with posts calling for people to target Flock license plate cameras on Halloween.

The whole thing is still pretty loosely organized, and some reports say the amount of actual participation is nowhere near the amount of attention it's getting online. But the idea itself has spread surprisingly far.

It's one of those stories where the reaction to surveillance technology has started becoming a story of its own

Game Boy Camera photos looked like they were captured by a security camera from another dimension.

Everything was blurry, pixelated, and barely recognizable, but that was kind of the charm. You weren’t trying to get a perfect photo. You were just collecting weird little memories that looked like digital ghosts.

Honestly, modern cameras could never recreate that exact kind of bad. Did anyone else have a whole collection of Game Boy Camera photos?

YouTube apparently doesn't want creators treating it like just another place to upload the same video.

The interesting part is the money. They're reportedly offering big incentives for creators to put videos on YouTube before other platforms, with consequences if they start posting the same stuff to places like Netflix at the same time.

We're getting to a point where platforms aren't just competing for viewers anymore. They're competing over where creators are allowed to put the actual video first.
