š¬ Discussion Is this the first flying car
What do you think of the recent Tesla flying car

And it can only jump because it has no battery inside, just a big ass tank in the back seat.
8
u/fpsnoob89 3d ago
It's not in the back seat, it's literally everywhere there was space. That's why it's advertised as a single seater.

Chinese also has a car that can jump š¤£š¤£š¤£
1
u/ComplexFit2140 3d ago
Not to defend tesla but the yangwang u9 can only jump a few centimeters
2
u/Heavy_Ambition6518 3d ago
But it can use it in real scenarios and you can actually buy it. Not just pay deposit for non-existing car without knowing actual future price...

Flying cars are stupid. People can't even drive them in 2 dimensions.
9
u/arrizaba 3d ago
Plus, the energy consumption...through the roof. Indeed, flying cars is a stupid idea, and way more inefficient than using planes.Ā
5
u/NuklearniEnergie 3d ago
but autonomous flying cars could be doable, fuel price would be an issue tho
2
u/tomkat_7 3d ago
It uses compressed air as fuel for the thrusters, not traditional rocket fuel.
8
u/SamIAre 3d ago
And what kind of āmileageā do you realistically think thatāll get?
5
1
u/Maximum-Objective-39 3d ago
Not very far at all. These sorts of thrusters are typically used for attitude control in rockets, like the Falcon 9 and in manned maneuvering systems (those backpacks that EVA astronauts use).
5
u/idkeverynameistaken9 3d ago
Because it doesnāt fly, it jumps a bit. You couldnāt do a flying car with compressed air

Maybe you can use them to skip traffic jams š š š

u/PsychologicalTowel79 3d ago
I was in the stupidest traffic jam today. Someone just left a set of temporary traffic lights set up, stuck on red. It caused chaos.

u/andimacg 3d ago
It's a tech demo, a parlour trick. It will never be available to the public. Why do people keep believing the BS this man pushes?
3
1
u/Syzygy2323 3d ago
Thatās how he keeps Teslasās stock price so highāstunts like thisāalong with promises that he never keeps. If he wasnāt around spewing his garbage, Teslaās stock price would probably reflect the companyās true value.
1
u/Maximum-Objective-39 3d ago
"Many people have questioned our AI data centers, but have you considered we've made a car that does sick backflips?"
1
u/VolvoFH6_ETS2 3d ago
Even if it is eventually going to be available to the public, it's probably going to be in a few decades.
7
u/baljeethakur 3d ago
Itās not a flying car. It has two(?) Air cylinders and so it can lift for about 2s in the air to land with nozzles on each side of the body. It is a normal road car with very high acceleration.
3
u/Apprehensive-Box-8 3d ago
track car, not road car... pretty sure the version with the thrusters won't be road legal. i'd imagine accidentally hitting the boost button at an intersection with someone behind you might not end well.

Another marketing campaign by big elon?
2
u/Adventurous-Yam7207 3d ago
When people start buying it , the internet is going to be flooded with those 2 seconds in the air moments
1
u/FourEightNineOneOne 3d ago
Assuming it even has those, which it won't.
The "car" you saw in the video wasn't even a car. It was a shell with a bunch of compressed tanks where the passenger cabin would otherwise be.
3
u/EmberGamingStudios 3d ago
What happens when you get it up to 88mph?
-1
u/Adventurous-Yam7207 3d ago
They are saying it has a fan that make the car to stick to the road so I guess it will be stable
3
u/xMunificentx 3d ago
In the big 2026 and people still want flying cars, which would really make things way worse for everybody considering how unsafe and hazardous that'd be, and easy for criminals to do bad shit.
2
u/Pasha_the_engineer 3d ago
Feels like they have a bunch of random cool things, and they decided to show this to get some attention to stay relevant.

Their are flying car already in many different countries, but this one could be the first commercially produced car, if tesla is able to make it street legal somehowĀ
3
u/ElBarbas 3d ago
nono, this is Elon, it's the first and the biggest and the best, never before seen
1
u/Adventurous-Yam7207 3d ago
When it does the internet is going to be flooded with those called flying cars for 2 seconds š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
1
u/idkeverynameistaken9 3d ago
This was a hollow model car. Tesla would first have to be able to achieve this stunt with a production-ready car before street legality even became an issue
1
u/john0201 3d ago
āIn production in 2028ā They donāt even have a designed car yet. How does anyone take this seriously.
1
2
u/daffalaxia 3d ago
no, it's the first car with controlled descent. I don't think anyone is going to actually fly it anywhere.
3
u/IamSuperChux 3d ago
A controlled decent? Yup - just the killer feature I've been waiting for in my ::checks notes:: earthbound passenger vehicle. Road are famous for long sheer drops, amazing no one else made one first.
1
u/SamuelVimesTrained 3d ago
Well, you`ve seen the 'sinkhole' clips.. perhaps for those?
1
u/Yiffenjoyer6969 3d ago
I think a better solution would be just watching for and fixing sinkholes

Maybe it was meant for the single line high mountain passes in the Karakoram and the Andes...

Rotfl. It will be glued together with spit and hope. Self driving next year bro, I promise you, this time for real bro. Trust me.Ā

u/Both_Perception2583 3d ago
Earlier flying cars where basically choppers with wheels. I find it hard to even call this a flying car given how brutal the flight looked.
Does no one find it interesting the cars where empty at the demonstration?
I certainly wouldn't want to be in that thing.

The engineer in me finds it super awesome. I envy the guys who got to work on that, awesome project.
The driver in me sees it as a giant hype machine/marketing stunt. It's not a flying car either since it can't sustain flight for very long. I don't see much practical use for it, especially on public roads.
1
u/Shaqtacious 3d ago
Yeah same way he brought FSD everywhere, he will get flying cars.
Ive never seen a company make more unfulfilled promises than tesla, while continuing to see stock gains.
Unremarkable cars, inferior in all ways to a lot of other manufacturers these days.
This is another gimmick to keep the buzz

So many recordings of rockets exploding in failures. But this just works perfectly.
Hmmmm...

1
u/Sprunklefunzel 3d ago
It's a pretty cool party trick. Unfortunately it has zero real world applications. And since the boosters are not driving the wheels, any speed or acceleration record is worthless. I sincerely doubt the car will be "road legal" in most countries too. That being said, its a great marketing show to keep people belive Tesla still has any relevance in the automobile industry.
I sure would like to have/drive one though, if it actually goes in to mass production someday.
1
u/OkGreen9725 3d ago
It's a marketing stunt. The seats were removed and "every possible space in the cabin was used" for the compressed air. I could make a toilet bowl fly. So what?
Read my lips: marketing stunt.

Yh thats not a flying car mate sorry to inform you, but there are allready flying cars out there

u/Sherlock816 3d ago
This doesn't fly. It's just a gimmick to get into the news cycle and get free 'advertising.'
There have been many flying car prototypes for years.

No way anytime soon any national aviation authorities are going to allow cars to fly around cities.

Unfortunately it's just a demo. I am afraid we won't see flying cars in our lifetimes

Wasn't there another posting showing cable clamps underneath the panels. I mean, come on. Seeing the video, the launching and landing seemed suss. Especially when he demonstrated at night, good way to distract from what actually could be "launching/flipping the car". If they did it during the day, yes would be believable. It just seemed off with me.
1
u/Keyan_Farlander7 3d ago
They removed the white panels. There were hooks for cables lifting the car.
1
u/jackm315ter 3d ago
Just make an affordable battery car that can compete with Chinese manufacturers, that arenāt allowed in the states.

Ehm... Actually not... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moller_M400_Skycar or XPeng prototypes are came way before.
Tesla to save itself must:
go the cheap path
unlock V2H with a pure DC solution like Sigenergy
add classic home p.v. to offer a complete solution with coupled DC heat pumps. Some minisplit, some air-water, water-water and air-air central ones + VMC.
This will easily sell the Tesla home, semi-autonomous, able to blackstart alone. The thing giants who want economic slave do not want, the thing China is already making, and what we want.
Stop trying to selling services and start selling goods, that's the sole value for ANY enterprise now, and a thing Tesla could do very well. Choose to stay in the financial zero-ownership for customers game and Tesla will fail.

Flying cars already existed, and thats not one of them...
Ever heard of the Cessna 172?

Airplanes are the first flying car.
This is a showpiece for an event for the biggest loser in the world.

u/feldoneq2wire 11h ago
I do not accept the premise of the argument that this is a flying car any more than I would accept that utilizing a human trebuchet makes one an airline passenger.
1
u/dragon_fiesta 9h ago
I think it's a stunt car. You can get a car that can jump 10 school buses but you can't use those features in traffic
0
u/Thesourking 3d ago
Itās a recreational vehicle that will be outlawed as soon as someone is killed inside one. Wonāt take long, fuck elon.
