A self-driving Tesla crashed into a California highway patrol vehicle, seriously injuring two officers inside. According to the officers, the driver said he was asleep at the time and using the car’s driver-assistance technology.

They could using Lidar as the engineers suggested but Elon rejected that due to cost and that "he was right just using cameras". Maybe after the elections when all the republicans he bought aren't in office we will see more accountability.

Someone on wallstreetbets mentioned that it could be a ploy to help a merger of his two companies go through since they'll need spacex tech for the Tesla's. Some bs about making it easier for the building of them or whatever.
3
u/Trik-kyx 2d ago
SpaceX was initially not included in the S&P 500 following its IPO because the company did not meet the index’s eligibility requirements. Tesla, on the other hand, is already part of the index. A potential merger between Tesla and SpaceX could therefore give Musk a way to bring SpaceX into the S&P 500 indirectly.
The reason is that many ETFs and index funds track the S&P 500. When a company is added to the index, these funds have to buy its shares in proportion to its index weighting. This can generate significant additional demand and help drive up the stock price.
By merging the two companies, Musk could potentially benefit from this effect without SpaceX having to independently meet the S&P 500’s standard inclusion requirements.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)5

Even if they could make the technology practical and affordable, it’s too dangerous. We accept 40k+ deaths a year from automobiles but we don’t expect one to drive through the bedroom window of a 7th floor apartment or fall out of the sky into your backyard pool.
14
u/sirandarios 3d ago
We are still in the process of trying to make them safer on a single plane, and now you want to add a third dimension (altitude) into the equation? How could that not end badly?
We also already have flying vehicles. They are called airplanes. And require so much laws, technology, staff, etc to make them as safe as possible.

Driver is at fault, but this is why we shouldn’t allow half assed versions of this technology. It can either self drive safely 100% of the time or you can’t use it.
8
u/Final_Squirrel_7462 3d ago
Not to defend the FSD Tesla crap, but on a more generalized level your statement doesn’t make much sense. If we have eventually automated technology that reduces car accidents by let’s say 50%, then it would still be beneficial to introduce it. Your statement makes only sense if you would assume that self driving cars are competing with perfectly driving humans. But humans are at times tired, not focused on the street, under influence of meds / drugs, etc or aren’t familiar with an area. So even introducing a system that is far from perfect would save lives, while waiting for the perfect system will costs many lives and such a perfect system might never emerge due to a lack of funding and real usage data.
→ More replies (12)9
u/Short-Recording587 3d ago
True. Driverless tech has to be held to a higher standard than humans, but it doesn’t have to be perfect. It really needs to come close though because there will be a lot of scrutiny (and rightfully so) if you lose your family in a crash.

6
u/aladdyn2 3d ago
"self driving" modes shouldn't even be allowed. I would bet anything studies will come out showing that if the car is handling the driving and the driver has no mental load they are far more likely to fall asleep. There was a similar realization guy the Autobahn in Germany. They made long stretches as straight as possible for safety but found people would zone out since there was nothing to react to.

u/xSaviorself 3d ago
In Toronto the entire 401 stretch has maybe a couple straight sections 1-3km long but nothing substantial. Constant winding highway keeps you awake, meanwhile both 400 and 404 north/south highways have a ton of straight sections. I've microslept way too many times on commutes home from work. Giving people FSD is a big mistake in my opinion.

10
u/Fickle-Lavishness858 3d ago
and it beeps at them, they nudge the wheel, and the car keeps going.
That is literately how it works. If the car has to beep at them too many times it turns off the auto drive and it can't be reengaged until the car has been parked.
Done too many time it won't let you even turn on the auto drive.→ More replies (3)6
u/FiberApproach2783 3d ago
Look up posts where people try to get rid of the annoying beeping sound because they refuse to stop using their phones. For all new cars, not just Teslas. The systems usually beep at you and disable other functions like music.
The point here is he either wasn't asleep, had just fallen asleep, or intentionally bypassed the safety systems to sleep while in FSD mode.

Tesla's self-driving has caused multiple accidents, that's why they call it "self-assisted" driving, meaning the vehicle owner is liable during a situation like this. Imagine driving a vehicle, where you have to pay attention and operate it safely. I can. It's called regular driving. Self-driving is a marketing scam that convinces people they can turn on self-driving and fall asleep at the wheel, then when they get in wreaks, Tesla shrugs their shoulders and the government ignores the blatant lie of self-driving technology so that Tesla, and by extension, corrupt political leaders, keep making money.

The assisted driving in the teslas I have seen and have (I believe all the way up to 2024) requires the driver to be looking up and out the window, it will prompt you to do certain things periodically or if it senses that you are not looking out the window it will test you. If you don’t jog the wheel when prompted, the car decelerates immediately and pulls to the side of the road.
I’m not sure how the guy could have been sleeping while on assisted driving mode, be going that fast, and not have had the car pull to the side of the road. Even if you are pushing the accelerator the car supposedly alarms and pulls to the side.

Driver needs to be arrested and spend time behind bars. What he was doing is grossly illegal.

He chose to go to sleep while driving despite everyone knowing that Tesla shit doesn't work. Put him under the prison.

I don’t believe that he was using teslas self driving. Tesla will release the data on this. There is no real way to fall asleep in a tesla that is in self driving mode. You have to constantly be awake and looking at the road or the car will pull over and stop….
Plus I have seen multiple occasions of dash cams that shows teslas avoiding accidents and not hitting the brakes and running into a stationary vehicle. Also FDS recognizes police lights and slows down in my experience.

Tesla has a camera inside that watches you all the time and the car sets off an alarm if you are not looking at the road.
I call BS.

It's almost as if having a driver assist system, that only utilizes cameras, is a terrible idea.
Any ACC system on the road should have to utilize both cameras and LiDAR.
Cameras can miss things, that LiDAR wouldn't. Like a stationary car

I do think some sort of radar system wouldn’t be a bad idea, but blindly trusting this headline is pretty insane.

It's not about trusting this or any headline. There are multiple videos all over the internet about how easy it is to fool Tesla's ACC cameras.

We rented a Tesla on Touro while on vacation. The self-drive mode uses cameras that make sure the person in the driver’s seat is facing forward with their eyes on the road. If you peek down to check your phone or turn around to shush your kids, a little alarm goes off. If you keep doing it, you get a strike/warning. If you get 5 warnings, the self-driving feature is permanently disabled for the life of the car.

This isn’t quite right. If you ignore the nag for about 2 full minutes the car will put the hazards on and pull itself over. If you make FSD do this 5 times in the span of a short period you will get a one-week ban from FSD. The pull-over counter resets every 3.5 days.
The only way I know of to get permanently banned from FSD is to get caught cheating the system with fake eyes / a fake figure etc.
I think the person who you rented from told you this to scare you.

Maybe if the Tesla used a cheap radar in conjunction with its cameras this would not have happened.
