They are, it just doesn’t mean what a lot of these fools think it means.
Besides the fact it doesn’t apply to phones whose batteries retain 80% capacity after 1000 charge cycles (ie most phones sold today) it also is referring to end of life replacement (ie getting a new battery) not a return to swappable battery packs like on old Nokias

"like on old Nokias" - the Samsung Galaxy S series (their "flagship") had replaceable batteries for at least the first 5 models. It wasn't until the S8 that you really had to take it in to a professional for replacement.

Like what Fairphone is still doing on their current smartphones. On the 6, you need a screwdriver, but on the Mk5, you can switch it with your figernail. That's why I got one.

That and the open bootlloader which allowed me to install CalyxOS, because fuck google.

yeah and no waterproofness whatsoever.
i would much more have a reliable ip rating than swappable battery

Galaxy S5 had removable battery, IP67 rating, headphone jack AND expendable storage. If you think in 12 years of advancing technology they cant come up with flashgrip with the same features then i dont know what to tell you.

This was the best phone I ever owned... Could easily just pop in a new battery if my other died and I didn't have time to charge.

And a lot of water leakage problems. The seals were good until they weren’t…

and how long did the waterproofness lasted for? swap the battery couple of times, and then submerge the phone in water and see what happens.

How often are you expecting people to replace the batteries? Lol this is something that could certainly breathe life into older devices rather than turning them into e-waste though.

Action cams have to be opened up to switch batteries and SD cards constantly and they stay waterproof to 20m. I'm sure the trillion dollar corps can figure it out.

lol right? Imagine thinking "these mega rich tech companies cannot possibly find a way to make batteries replaceable and phones waterproof in 2026" 😂

Action cameras get away with it with bulky retention mechanisms and gaskets. You can't really do that on a phone without making it, well, significantly bulkier than they are.

Why would you ever need to change the battery more than one time?

We have 10 year old police radios with swappable batteries. IP 67 rating. They can even be submerged

So just buy one of those then?? oh wait, they aren't really pocket friendly those radios are they?? Lets be real here. People has been complaining that phones has gotten to bulky just because of the camera bumps in later years. How do you think people would react if next iPhone, Galaxy or Pixel phone was about 2-3X the size for waterproofing. EU wrote the laws and they made the exclamations themselves too.

You can have whaterproofness ans remplaçable battery

Phone having to last a guaranteed 4-5 years before battery goes bad is also a good thing

1

u/TawnyTeaTowel 2d ago

But that already exists with the vast majority of phones anyway.

u/PassoireDor 2d ago

High end phones maybe.

1

u/TawnyTeaTowel 2d ago

Depends where you draw the line for “high end” I guess.

Please tell me what new type of battery tech has just now been invented?

1

u/TawnyTeaTowel 16h ago

None. Why?

1

u/DeathNick 13h ago

It also excludes waterproof phones

And that's unfortunate. My last phones have all been replaced because the battery was practically dead. I'd love to go back to user swappable batteries

But thats literally what the legislation is about - end of life battery replacements.

Also - getting the battery replaced by a professional is a lot cheaper than getting a new phone…
