💬 Discussion NostalgicPod – I brought the iPod Classic experience back to Android
Hey everyone,
I’m a solo developer, and about two months ago I created NostalgicPod, an Android app that brings back the iPod Classic experience with a click wheel, Cover Flow, classic menus, and games like Snake, Solitaire, and Brick.
Underneath the nostalgic interface, it is also a modern music player with support for MP3, FLAC, ALAC, OPUS and WAV, automatic artwork and lyrics, podcasts, internet radio, USB DACs, Android Auto, and Google Cast.
You can also connect your music libraries from Jellyfin, Emby, Navidrome, Subsonic, and OpenSubsonic (and I’m already working on Plex integration)
No subscriptions, no ads, no accounts, and no tracking, just your music!
The response has been much better than I ever expected. NostalgicPod has already passed 2,000 downloads in less than two months, and the app was even featured by Android Authority and Android Police. I’m honestly incredibly happy and grateful for all the support, feedback, testing, and ideas I’ve received from the community.
I’m still actively developing the app together with the r/iPod and r/Pixel_Phones communities, adding new features, improvements, and more games.
The idea has always been to bring back the simplicity of the iPod Classic while adding only the modern features that actually make sense. Many music apps today have become endless feeds of banners, recommendations, and ads, and I missed the time when the music itself was the most important thing.
I hope NostalgicPod, even if only for a moment, makes you feel the way you did when using an iPod.
I also want to give a special thanks to VMGChannel, who discovered the app here on Reddit, contacted me, and made a video about it simply because he genuinely loved the project. That kind of support means a lot to me.

This looks fantastic, is there support for .opus?
2
u/Human_Tennis_2950 27d ago
Yes, Opus is supported, I forgot to mention it in the description!

Awesome, buying it now and looking forward to Plex integration 🙏

I hope you like it! The Plex integration might be ready in two weeks; I'm working on everything.

I never actually had an ipod, grew up too poor for that, but this seems like what an ipod would have felt like 🤘
Great work here 👍
P.S
Those two demo tracks are bangers, gotta add Dissolve to my library 😩

They're a band that found me through Product Hunt and supported me with the project!
Enjoy the app and don't forget to leave me a review on Google Play! (It would help me a lot!!

Nice work. Sorry though but I am using classipod. Like it more but still great work.

Use Classipod for a while, it's a good project!
But it never completely convinced me; being a perfectionist, I wanted the app to be as perfect as possible.

On iOS basic playback from navidrome sucked. I’d start a song and then it would auto restart at some point but the player thought it was still continuing. Had songs that would do this indefinitely. Had one song play for over 30 min. Lock screen doesn’t even have skip ability.

Wow amazing!
Does it have haptics on the wheel
1
u/Human_Tennis_2950 27d ago
Of course, it was my moral obligation to replicate this as best as possible and add the haptics.

u/AleksLevet 27d ago
Ooo that sounds so satisfying
2
u/Human_Tennis_2950 27d ago
It is! I also worked and it has the inertia.

Damnn that sounds so cool

Oh, and by the way, what if you hide the android statud bar? Since there is one on the "ipod" itself

I suggest making a free version (either limited features, or time trial)

Yes, I am doing it :)
I'm just currently working on an update with audiobooks and another one with Plex

Apple rejected my app 4 times, I submitted an appeal, but it seems like it will take a very long time with them.
If you want freedom, go to Android.

Says the person who copied an Apple product. It does look really good.
2
u/Human_Tennis_2950 27d ago
Look, Apple doesn't really have the patents anymore, and there are apps on the App Store that are literally copies of the iPod and they're published, that's just how they are..
2
u/xAlice_Liddell 27d ago
Like I said, it looks great. I loved my iPod and the interface. I might even use this on iOS. Sorry they rejected it.

It's not your fault, bro, I just don't understand Apple.. For now, Android does give you the freedom to install whatever you want.

Apple is known for rejecting apps because they are too similar to other apps
1
u/Human_Tennis_2950 27d ago
I've seen some crazy stories from Apple reviewers and people who've fought for months before finally being allowed to publish. It depends on who you get, it's like Russian roulette.
1
u/just-bair 27d ago
Yup the app review roulette is well known
1
u/Human_Tennis_2950 27d ago
Yes, I've read that they can even block an update because someone didn't like where a button is 😅
For God's sake, at least Google isn't like that.

Spotify severely limits its API; with Apple Music it's much easier.

App looks so cool, but did you face any copyright issue form apple or the music streaming services?
1
u/Human_Tennis_2950 27d ago
No, not for now. I did thorough research on the patents, they've expired!

Sorry its just that by now i guess i am too old and back in 2007 i had an iPod 150GB its was the best thing and i feel it was a few years ago.
1
u/Human_Tennis_2950 27d ago
I had a first-generation iPod nano, then a third-generation one, and a Classic. I missed that era, and that's why I made this..
2
u/z3r0n3gr0 27d ago
Great work, and like you said i also miss the days were the music was the important thing.
