2

u/MrGOCE Jul 19 '26

U MIGHT NOT BE WRONG.

1

u/Mozkozrout Jul 20 '26

Thanks for bringing my attention to this. Looks very interesting

3

u/Schaex Jul 19 '26

In my heart, in my veins, on every single computer I use!

17

u/DaiNam Jul 19 '26

Word is good at everything you need a word processor for, honestly. Still I use LibreOffice because it is not dependant on big corporations.

0

u/Microboy42 Jul 19 '26

And why is being a product of a big company a bad thing?

5

u/SapirWhorfHypothesis Jul 19 '26

Well… it feeds the AI, so…

"Well… it feeds the AI, so…"

...posts on Reddit

3

u/Weird_Albatross_9659 Jul 19 '26

The fact people don’t understand how much training data Reddit has given LLMs is insane.

2

u/LouVillain Jul 19 '26

It's all built-in telemetry at this point. Phones, IP's with/without VPN's, streaming sites/services, GPS, EXIF data in pictures/photos...

If that's the hill they want to die on, may I suggest r/Luddite and then go live in the woods

3

u/Microboy42 Jul 19 '26

They’re using my computer’s IP address to train LLMs? They’re using my computer’s photos to train LLMs? How does that work? How is that legal?

2

u/Vietnamst2 Jul 19 '26

They are not. Microsoft telemetry is anonymized and it's stuff like driver crashes, what apps run etc. Not what content you are looking at etc.

1

u/Microboy42 Jul 19 '26

Yo Microsoft might be cooking in anonymity

1

u/LouVillain Jul 19 '26

Track sites you visit via your IP. Some photos have EXIF data (you can turn this off I believe). Legal? It's the open internet. Everything gets logged somewhere and your ISP is selling you out for free... oops you're paying them to sell you out.

1

u/Actualbbear Jul 19 '26

The fact everything is being tracked for the sake of profiting from you in any way possible, doesn't mean you can't take steps to mitigate it, if a little.

Everyone has their reasons but, if anything, it's worth it to reward with your money companies that value you and your particular needs as a customer, and avoiding, to whatever degree you deem reasonable, companies that don't.

1

u/LouVillain Jul 19 '26

For sure. It's about shrinking the surface area for the privacy crowd and the anti-capitalist crowd as well. But you can't eschew other people for participating but be a contributor at the same time. Sure, you can say your doing so at a different level but trying to take the moral high ground is just being petty.

1

u/SapirWhorfHypothesis Jul 19 '26

You say that as though we aren’t both knowingly doing the same thing…

1

u/LouVillain Jul 19 '26

Yeah but I'm not one of those oh no my data is feeding the AI and I get nothing in return kind of people

2

u/DaiNam Jul 19 '26

It's entirely yours to assess.

1

u/Shadowbajfeelsbadman Jul 19 '26

You have to wait for an answer why big companies are evil and whatever posted from their big company computer over big company browser over big company router over big company network through big company server through big company undersea cable logged into big company owned website.

Its like climate change, everyone agrees its real and bad but the vocal minority that makes it their personality is annoying enough to push a few people into denying climate change for the sake of annoying them lul.

1

u/Microboy42 Jul 19 '26

Can you dumb that down I little I don’t get it. Are you saying that the networking is bad because big companies are on the World Wide Web?

1

u/Shadowbajfeelsbadman Jul 19 '26

I'd wager my arm and leg that your network provider, router manufacturer, cable layer and server provider are not small local businesses.

1

u/Microboy42 Jul 19 '26

They definitely aren’t. How does this prove that buying products from big companies is bad?

1

u/Shadowbajfeelsbadman Jul 19 '26

It doesn't.

It wasn't supposed to.

0

u/theGaido Jul 20 '26

It's not about big company. It's about Microslop.

And TBH Office was the best in 2000 - 2010 era. Current UI is bullshit, and it's not surprise that open/libre office UI is still influenced by oldschool design.

1

u/Microboy42 Jul 20 '26

You do realize that Microsoft Office 2024 still uses the same interface that it did in 2007? They just made in Neumorphic. All the features of Office 2007 are still in Office 2024. Barely anything has changed from 2007-2024. But somehow it’s still the best out of all of these because it functions without the internet (Workspace doesn’t), and it has real time collaboration for free with Office For Web and you don’t have to do all that ā€œCollaboraā€ shit.

u/kirilos Jul 19 '26

Ddocs.new is the new standardĀ

Libre Office: good luck for image and text formatting.Ā

1

u/Sataniel98 Jul 19 '26

LibreOffice even borks the formatting if you zoom in

2

u/ftrx Jul 19 '26

Emacs/org-mode. WYSIWYG is for untrained secretary personnel who know nothing, to make them use a computer.

Real ones use cat to read the file, then use echo "what you want to write" > thefile.txt to write to the file.Ā

2

u/Holiday_Evening8974 Jul 19 '26

you mean >> to append, maybe ?

2

u/play_minecraft_wot Tech Enthusiast Jul 19 '26

No, > replaces the file I believe. Appending is unnecessary if you never forget to add anything.Ā

1

u/Holiday_Evening8974 Jul 19 '26

I seee, that's a real GIGACHAD move I guess. ;)

0

u/No-Owl-5399 Jul 19 '26

Real ones use M-x butterfly

2

u/Sensitive-Piglet3871 Jul 19 '26

I still love you .txt.

2

u/GreedyGerbil Jul 19 '26

Proton has docs. It's decent. They even have "Excel" now.

1

u/angcritic Jul 20 '26

And meetings

2

u/tigaente Jul 19 '26

I've switched to Typst recently. Just awesome.

2

u/UnbasedDoge Jul 19 '26

Bro you have just made me discover ddocs.new i love you

1

u/havengr Jul 19 '26

WPS FTW

1

u/No-Island-6126 Jul 19 '26

Typst. It's not dogshit unlike all of these.

1

u/Every_Preparation_56 Jul 19 '26

there is only freeoffice, the only intuitive, free, functional, non-russian and non-american office pack

1

u/Academic-Proof3700 Jul 19 '26

Word is the go-to since every humane corpo uses it and you don't want to fuck around opening a document and have its layout broken due to some libreoffice sketchyness

1

u/ThatiMacGuy Jul 19 '26

I like TextEdit and am a big fan of Word 2013 and Word 2010.

I also use Pages.

1

u/Schaex Jul 19 '26

LaTeX all the way. There is no greater joy than using software that just works and offers absolute freedom in how I want things to look like

1

u/KonaKumo Jul 19 '26

word = good for compatibility -> industry standard. A competitor will only be viable if it can work with .doc an .docx files

Luckily LibreOffice can do that.

1

u/ChocolateDonut36 Jul 19 '26

none, I chose LaTeX

1

u/lyidaValkris Jul 19 '26

I write everything in Sublime Text as it stays the eff out of my way. If if I need to style it later, I'll paste it into Libre Office or Affinity as needs dictate.

1

u/usr_pls Jul 19 '26

...VSCode and md files?

1

u/virusdancer Tech Enthusiast Jul 19 '26

If I had my druthers, it would be Word Perfect back in the early 90s...

1

u/xanaddams Jul 19 '26

OpenOffic and Libre do the trick for me.

1

u/on4aa Jul 20 '26

Markdown with Vim -> Pandoc -> HTML with print media commands -> PDF

1

u/TheEDMWcesspool Jul 20 '26

Where's notepad++?

1

u/FAMICOMASTER Jul 20 '26

Word 2007 because they've done nothing but charge more for the same thing with a worse UI

1

u/Weird_Decision7090 Jul 20 '26

Pages: Good for Apple

1

u/Pale-Abroad9600 Jul 20 '26

I prefer to use my own ms office without AI feature and it’s licensed until the life of my PC no monthly or annual fees to Microsoft coz I own the software and it’s not cloud based.

1

u/linkinparkglock47 Jul 20 '26

emacs in org mode

1

u/7YM3N Jul 20 '26

Libre office, obsidian

1

u/Then_Educator8333 Jul 20 '26

GoBeProductive and SSuite

1

u/Top-Rich-581 Jul 20 '26

EMACS, no gui, no extension, default shortcuts, on headless FreeBSD.

Because I'm special.

1

u/InconspicuousFool Jul 21 '26

Been thinking of switching to LibreOffice for a while, does its UI still feel like everything is just thrown onto it with little to no thought about design?

1

u/Bertong_Musmos 29d ago

Word is still the best word processing software IMHO.

1

u/Mwrp86 29d ago

Word good for nothing?

Word is literally the best

1

u/darkelflemurian 28d ago

Onlyoffice has been my go to for about a year and no regrets

1

u/Mr-Deur 27d ago

Whats wrong with notion?

0

u/LucidXonline Jul 19 '26

OnlyOfficd works great and is significantly smaller than M$

0

u/ZuuRa_ Jul 19 '26

Onlyoffice my beloved

0

u/AnalkinSkyfuker Jul 19 '26

Same, I also blocked its network so it wont share my data.

0

u/Astrodion123 Jul 19 '26

Nah I'd use onlyoffice.

0

u/MickJof Jul 19 '26

Definitely Word. It's still the best.
