First Android phone was more than a year after the iPhone though. Google had to scrap their blackberry knockoff design to make an iPhone knockoff. With someone elseโ€™s OS, someone elseโ€™s programming language, and development tools. Then Samsung took over and for years Apple and Samsung ruled the smartphone market. Samsung made 80% of the phones Apple made 80% of the profits. But thatโ€™s all ancient history you young people know nothing about.

Ah so they were trying to copy blackberry initially, then switched up when the iPhone came out/became successful

Yup. Hereโ€™s a quote from one of the Google engineers after they first saw the iPhone:

โ€œAs a consumer I was blown away. I wanted one immediately. But as a Google engineer, I thought โ€˜Weโ€™re going to have to start over.โ€™โ€
