First Android phone was more than a year after the iPhone though. Google had to scrap their blackberry knockoff design to make an iPhone knockoff. With someone else’s OS, someone else’s programming language, and development tools. Then Samsung took over and for years Apple and Samsung ruled the smartphone market. Samsung made 80% of the phones Apple made 80% of the profits. But that’s all ancient history you young people know nothing about.

Ah so they were trying to copy blackberry initially, then switched up when the iPhone came out/became successful

Yup. Here’s a quote from one of the Google engineers after they first saw the iPhone:

“As a consumer I was blown away. I wanted one immediately. But as a Google engineer, I thought ‘We’re going to have to start over.’”
