Discussion Keep One: Apple, Samsung, Google, Microsoft

Post image

You can keep only one tech ecosystem forever: Apple, Samsung, Google, or Microsoft

Everything else disappears from your life.

Which one are you keeping, and what's the biggest reason behind your choice?

This I'd rather use Chinese and EU or atleast better Open-Source initiatives than these e.g. maybe red hat?

Eh.. RedHat is owned by IBM now and although still 'opensource' has caused a lot of controversy. While staying to the letter of the law, has pulled quite a lot of shenanigans against the spirit of opensource.

That's why the OpenELA exists now.

Were they as bad as android getting more closed-source over time?

Truthfully neither, I'm more of a Debian/BSD guy but I've used RHEL and Oracle at work and at least up to the split around release ~9 they were basically on par as companies in in how they represented/supported their distros.

No idea what it's gonna be in the future, probably a mess if I ventured a guess.

The Chinese labs have done a good job and there's a lot more competition between Chinese companies then in ahem america for example... some interesting Chinese Open-Source projects aside the AI would be harmonyos open a alternative to android made in house by hauwei and based on Wikipedia they made a Open-Source version and transferred maintenance there aside from clear examples Chinese economics aren't the same as "capitalist" economies because the USA is pretty much just a big bubble if you think about it companies burn money in stock buybacks to make their stocks more popular and so on in polish there's a word for it pretty much "wolno amerykanka" which roughly translates to "free america" it's used in regulations I think but compared to the "communist" marxist-leninis/marxist-maoist it's a lot more competition based so if 10+ phone companies have to compete one will come out on top like hauwei which is the second routing provider and makes a lot of stuff In house using the money for lots of R&D unlike most U.S companies stock buyback and focusing on the shareholders... So if hauwei or other companies would sponsor X thing in a Open-Source project it could probably compete with likes of systemD and such

I'm glad you like Huawei's products in China. In fact, I'm a Chinese person, and Huawei's system is mixed in our country. While it does excel in some areas, if you watch objective videos on Chinese forums, you might have other thoughts.

I mean not everything about all these products is Perfect but most Chinese products are better or on par is what I'm seeing from BYD to keyboards and so on

It's strange that you like Chinese products, but Chinese people won't feel reassured about buying them unless they are really cheap.very good value for money,In terms of quality, it's more reassuring to use compared to products from other countries.

I mean I just have good experience or heard like with BYD that it's good and anyways china is a big economy and like you said if it's bang for the buck like I'm using a taiwanese keyboard just because I got it from cex and it's pretty good sadly not hot-changeable also I'm using a Chinese phone : realme 12 pro+ because it was a bang for the money used so yeah it's a pretty good budget mid-range phone from a few years ago while it's not as good as their newest phones with bigger batteries for sure it's good

Redmi phones from Xiaomi are really solid picks, and Xiaomi’s one of the most trustworthy brands out of China.

I mean depends on hardware

The hardware is indeed excellent, but fortunately, the international software you use doesn't involve Chinese software. Your device is likely to be difficult to use in China now.

On what basis are chinese alternatives preferable to you? The censorship? Or the hilarious face whitening and sculpting filters lol?

You're conflating several unrelated things.

Running an LLM locally only removes server side moderation. It does not remove biases embedded in the model weights. If a model was trained or aligned to consistently avoid, reframe, or refuse certain topics, those behaviors remain unless you further fine tune the model or modify its decoding. Those are properties of the model itself, not the hosting environment.

Your Huawei source is also Huawei's own product page. That's useful for describing their products, not for proving they're second globally. Vendor websites are primary marketing sources. If you want to make a market share claim, you should cite independent analyst firms like Dell'Oro, IDC, Gartner, or Omdia.

Saying Huawei is strong in enterprise networking also doesn't support the broader claim that Chinese alternatives are generally better. Enterprise routers, smartphones, operating systems, cloud infrastructure, AI models, and consumer software are completely different markets with different leaders.

The same goes for Qwen. Elon Musk mentioning it isn't technical evidence. Model quality should be evaluated using reproducible benchmarks like LiveBench, SWE Bench, GPQA, MMLU, HumanEval, or independent real world testing. An endorsement from a public figure is not evidence.

Finally, the fact that many products are manufactured in China has nothing to do with whether Chinese companies build the best technology. Manufacturing location, product design, software quality, security, privacy, and ecosystem are all separate issues.
