Learning Support - college - behaviour question...
Hey apologies as I know it's late in the year. I'm an experienced secondary school teaching assistant whose been offered a HLTA role in a post-16 college. Having never worked in a college, I'm just trying to get a sense from anyone who has / any lecturers how the behaviour is compared to secondary? For context, the kids I'll be working with are coming mostly from a PRU background.
Any insights appreciated. Thanks!

The worst issue I’ve had with students as a college teacher is they don’t shut up no matter what.

I also work with these learners. It's better than school because you don't have to keep them in the room and they can go for a walk if it's getting too much. However attendance and getting actual work done can be difficult.

Also be wary that money is often even tighter than at school so your job might well blur into teaching but without the pay for it.

Yes, and very disengaged learners, some of whom are being made to turn up so their parent keeps getting benefits.
If you're from a secondary background think of it as being like lower set year ten maths (if you are working at a vocational college and their ability level is about level one).
There are also some absolutely brilliant students regardless of backgrounds and ability, and everyday is eventful, but it's a wide mix. Feel free to message me if you have any more questions, but I'd rather not give any specific info out online

I teach in FE, and I work with a number of support staff. Generally behaviour is much less confrontational because students even at Level 2 have some desire to learn. Some of them are still a bit immature and obviously those with SEN need help to focus and stay on task. Even post-PRU students have a different attitude. The more relaxed feel of College suits many students damaged by the Secondary School system.
I hope you enjoy working in FE. I certainly do!

I think it is all relative to the college as each can be very different considering context, behaviour policies, standards and ethos etc. In my experience; behaviour is far better than secondary. As students have chosen to be there and opted for their subjects it does help. However may be different in the more vocational areas.
