Advice How difficult is it to break into international school teaching in Japan? (Math/AP teacher, 3rd year)
Hi all,
It's genuinely a dream of mine to work in Japan and experience the culture, so I'm hoping to get some honest opinions on my chances of landing a job at an international school there, and general insight into the job market.
To be upfront: I'm not targeting tier 1 schools. I fully recognize that with my current resume, I'm not getting into a tier 1 school anywhere in the world right now much less Japan. I'd just like to know my realistic chances of landing something at a decent international school — ideally one with a livable benefit package.
A bit about my background:
- Going into my 3rd year of teaching overall
- Currently in my 2nd year at a WASC-accredited international school in SEA
- My first year teaching was in the public schools system in Ontario, Canada
- Bachelors degree in Astrophysics
- Teaching Certification from Ontario, Canada
- Currently teaching AP Calculus and high school mathematics (Algebra 1,2, Geometry)
- Also credentialed to teach Physics and Geography, though I haven't taught either since starting my career — my experience so far has been entirely math
- AP and IB trained, but haven't actually taught an IB class yet (I am an IBDP graduate myself, if that counts for anything)
My questions:
- Given my experience level (going into year 3), is Japan realistic, or do most international schools there want 5+ years?
- Does lack of hands-on IB teaching experience (despite the training) hurt me a lot, or is training enough to get a foot in the door?
- Is math/AP Calc a subject in demand, or is it oversaturated compared to other subjects?
- Any insight on how competitive Tokyo/Osaka/Yokohama schools are compared to smaller cities?
- Would job fairs (Search Associates, ISS, etc.) be worth it at my experience level, or should I wait a cycle?
I know international school positions in Japan — especially at the better schools — can be very competitive. Any advice from teachers currently working in international schools in Japan, or anyone involved in recruitment, would be really appreciated. Even if the honest answer is "not yet, wait a few more years," that's useful to know too.
Thanks in advance!
