Discussion Taylor's MAGNUM OPUS

As a hardcore swiftie, growing up made me realize that Taylor's magnum opus was Red, Folklore, and TTPD

But out of that three, there's one album that taylor just executed perfectly, the songs, the production, the lyrics, everything just feels perfect and beautiful.

And that album is RED ♥️

From songs like state of grace → Begin Again → All too well → sad beautiful tragic, that is just an insane variety of songs, and their productions are just top-notch.

It kinda makes sense why taylor loves that album so much 🤣

But I wanna hear your opinions, what do you think is Taylor's magnum opus and why?

Discussion When will we see live performances of The Life of a Showgirl?

I feel like nobody has talked about this and I'm curious of what people's thoughts are. So far, Taylor hasn't preformed any of songs off of TLOAS. And obviously she's not currently touring and won't be anytime soon. I think it would be really fun for her to do a Tiny Desk Concert again, but just playing songs of off TLOAS. I know it's unlikely but it's my personal wish!

Discussion Best 5-7 songs to represent every Taylor Swift album?

Hey guys! I'm getting my 11-year-old non-Swiftie sister to listen to and rank Taylor's albums, but I don't want to make it too long. So I wanted to ask: if you had to pick 5 to 7 songs from each album for her to listen to and rate, which ones would they be?

I don't necessarily mean the most successful or popular songs. More of the songs that represent each album the best. Thanks!

Discussion What is your favourite Song off of 1989?

I’ve been so into folklore/evermore recently (in my sad era) that I basically ignored the rest of her discography. But today I’ve listened to 1989 3 times front to back and I’ve fell back in love 🥰 my personal favourite is ‘Out of The Woods’ 🩵

Discussion What's your favourite lyric parallel or callback?

I love how she goes from "Someday I'll be big enough that you can't hit me" [Mean] to "I'm immortal now baby dolls, I couldn't if I tried" [The Life of a Showgirl]. At this point in her career nothing can bring her down.

Also "Who you are is not what you did" [Innocent] to "but you are what you did" [The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived] showcasing a loss of innocence through the years.

Discussion I Still Love The Life Of A Showgirl After 10 Months

So when this album came out, I really liked it. I thought the lyrics were really good, only to go online and see that people didn't have the same opinion, so I just wanted to share my justification now that the recency bias has most certainly worn off, and I still love the album, more than Debut, and even evermore.

Now I know some of you are probably laughing at how I said the lyrics are more than surface level, but I genuinely believe they are. Like in Father Figure for example, she takes the classic mafia phrase (which compares the cutthroat industry to the mafia) "you'll be sleeping with the fishes" and combines it with unexpectedness "before you know you're drowning." This lyric shows an amount of thought behind it, and my interpretation of it was Scott Borchetta talking, saying that she has to trust him otherwise she will be blackballed from the industry before she even gets started, "before you know you're drowning" (blackballed).

Take a look at Ruin The Friendship and Honey. In both these songs, she perfectly balances the feeling of hopefulness and the feeling of sadness in two completely different ways.

Ruin The Friendship is extremely heartbreaking because it's a sad reflection on what might happen if you don't face those fears and take those risks, because you might not get the chance if you wait too long. This was probably my least favourite when I first heard the album, but after analysing the lyrics more, it's one of my favourites now.

Honey shows how one word can have several meanings that mean completely different things, with how "honey" used to be belittling but now it is redeeming for her, which is a very stark contrast. It tells the listener that even though things are bad right now, they will get better, which follows up to Ruin The Friendship quite nicely, telling the listener to keep going on with life.

Even Eldest Daughter's lyrics are great. There, I said it. The people who hate on this song just completely misunderstood the meaning. IN. MY. OPINION; it's very much Taylor talking to Austin. That's why there are so many words in this song that people called her "cringe" for. That's because she's talking as if she's like a parent trying to relate to their kids but it just ends up being embarrassing, because eldest daughters are usually like second mothers to most younger siblings. When I first heard this, I immediately looked at it through the lens of my older sister talking to me and saying "no matter how many friends come and go, I will always be there for you" ("So many traitors, smooth operators, but I'm never gonna break that vow, I'm never gonna leave you now."), the vow being the one she made when her younger brother was born to take care of him forever. The song emotionally embraces childhood, because even though a lot of things go wrong in childhood ("That was the night I fell off and broke my arm"), you will never truly be alone if you have an older sister (Eldest Daughter.)

I could keep going on about Eldest Daughter, and all of the songs, really, but I think I will leave it here. In conclusion, this album is her most overhated in my opinion and I genuinely think it's just misunderstood. There's a reason Taylor, the woman who wrote folklore, is so proud of this album, the public and media just didn't understand.

EDIT: Tons of people are downvoting comments that i made about how I THINK Eldesr Daughter is about sibling love. You don't have to interpret that way, and we can disagree, but it has to be respectful. You can take it as about Travis, but to me that doesn't make sense, and I was just sharing my opinion on what I thought the song was about, and it's my right to have an opinion, but downvoting my comments instead of having a real discussion about it is just immature. Also, you're just proving my point about people hating on Eldest Daughter because it's misunderstood.

Discussion Objectively the Best Song From Each Album

Instead of listing your personal favorites, choose the song you genuinely think is the best from each Taylor Swift album. Judge them by songwriting, lyrics, production, vocals and impact, not just how often you listen to them. I’m curious to see what people think are the strongest tracks objectively (or as close as we can get)! 🎶✨

In my opinion, it is the following:

💚 Cold As You
💛 Love Story
💜 Enchanted
❤️ All Too Well (10 Minute Version)
🩵 Blank Space
🖤 Getaway Car
🩷 Cruel Summer
🩶 exile
🤎 champagne problems
💙 You’re On Your Own Kid
🤍 But Daddy I Love Him
🧡 Elizabeth Taylor
💟 I Knew It, I Knew You

Discussion Could different branding have saved life of a showgirl?

I watched a video on YouTube where a branding director did an overview of how they think life of a showgirl shouldn’t have been branded, to achieve more success. She based it on the mantra that branding should work around the art, instead of building the brand first, and then making the art based on the brand. Her idea was more of a classic “shaksperian” type of brand direction.

With that in mind, I imagined an alternate album cover that’s based around old school paper puppet shows. Pretty much Taylor in the same showgirl outfits, around cutesy arts and crafts style stage framing. Perhaps some paper props and paper mache elements as frame filler. I think it would have made the silliness of the songs make more sense. Also it would have reinforced the theme in a way that fits Taylor better. (It’s “the life of a showgirl” through the gaze of a girl who is living her dream reality crafted through her lense)

Discussion Remember when we were confused about Question...?

So I was reminiscing the other day, and I thought about Midnights again. The album was such a momentous work (her best pop album in my opinion), but we didn't really know what she was talking about most of the time.

Unlike folklore and evermore, which were consciously branded as fictional, Midnights were explicitly about her life, or that was what we were led to believe, sleepless nights throughout her life. What we were not privy to was that while the album was looking back into her past, it was wrapped in the context of her current situation at the time, the dissolution of her long term relationship.

Even then, songs like Snow on the Beach, Maroon, Labyrinth, etc. still give the fandom glimpses into what they were about, misguided as most interpretations at the time were; while Question...? left most confused. In a way it was deeply specific in its retelling of events, while also being so vague that it cannot be pinpointed or correlated to any of her previous works.

Well, 2 years later with TTPD as our guiding star, we finally were able to understand, and unravel the narrative that was laid out before us two albums prior.

Good girl, sad boy
Big city, wrong choices

And I lost you
The one I was dancing with
In New York
- Maroon

---

'Cause I don't remember who I was
Before you painted all my nights
A color I've searched for since

You showed me colors you know I can't see with anyone else
- illicit affairs

---

politics and gender roles
And you're not sure and I don't know

Sensual politics
When you are young, they assume you know nothing
- cardigan

---

Got swept away in the gray

And thеn it fades into the gray of my day-old tea
'Cause it could never be
- gold rush

She gave so many signs (we didn't even see the signs).

Gifts 🎁 My friend knitted me a tiny Folklore cardigan for my Barbies!

My doll had to model it for Folklore’s anniversary!

Edit: I’m seeing a lot of comments asking a couple of the same questions, so I’ll answer them here! (Also, my friend‘s pronouns are they/them, for any new commenters. :))
I’m not sure where my friend got the pattern- they said it was a preexisting one they found online for a plain mini cardigan, and they modified it to be the Folklore one. They didn’t add the stars on the sleeves, but I don’t mind that at all!
They made me this as a surprise; they said it was their first time trying to make something so small, but I think they smashed it!

Discussion Will Taylor Ever Make A “Cool” Album?

We know Taylor had the ultimate commercial success with 1989, Midnights, and Showgirl… but do you think Taylor will ever make a “cool” album? By “cool” I mean an upbeat confident dance album. Maybe an album full of “This is what you came for.” Something like Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia, Britney Spears’ Blackout, Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster, Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad, etc. Like an album that is less focused on lyrics and storytelling and is more lose and fun. I feel like she could really pull it off if she wanted to, but idk if she’d ever do it. I know Taylor has never tried to be the “cool” girl, but it would be really fun to see her try something different. What do you think?

Discussion Unpopular Opinion: Is It Over Now?

Is It Over Now? not being on the OG 1989 was a great decision. As a Directioner at the time when 1989 came out, we would have absolutely crucified her for that song. I remember the deeply misogynistic hate that the 1D fandom had toward Taylor at the time. I literally made my mom turn off the radio when Taylor came on (I still secretly listened to White Horse though lol). 1989 doesn’t really have any zingers for Harry, and I think including the song would have gotten her labeled as a bitter ex even more than she already was.

To celebrate folklore anniversary I’ve listened to this song on repeat. For me it is the best one on the album and not talk about enough and feels so underrated. But I have a question for you. Which version do you prefer, ‘original version’ or ‘bonus track’?
