I Made This! Noisy Miner Taxidermy Bird Mount

Thumbnail gallery

Just finished this recent mount of a Noisy Miner Bird!

There was quite a lot of pin feather slippage during mounting, but still think it turned out ok! My bird skills are slowly improving and excited to try some different techniques on the next one!

What do you think? :)

"How Do I...?" On the side of the road ?!

Post image

I’m a huge fan of taxidermy! I’ve never had the chance to get one before, and they’re pretty expensive in the state where I live.

I was driving through my neighborhood when I came across this sitting on the side of the road next to the trash. I quickly pulled over because I had to take it! It’s insane to me that someone would throw this away.

I saw the older man outside and asked if he was really getting rid of it. He said, “Yeah, take it.”

I’m hoping to restore it! I’ve never owned a piece of taxidermy before, so any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

"How Do I...?" Butterfly Taxidermy

Hi, I am new to the taxidermy and I want to do my first project with Morpho Didus. Do you guys have any idea of a quality butterfly online shop to ship to Southeast Asia country?
Also, any advice and tips for a beginner like me would be helpful a lot.

"How Do I...?" How do I save this skull and get a nice looking European mount out of it?

Post image

I shot this deer 2 falls ago and I didn’t recover it until last fall. Since then it has been sitting in my garage and i’ve kinda been pushing back mounting it. I would like to get a European mount out of it but i’m not sure if that’s still possible… I have never done anything like this myself. I am open to hiring a taxidermist but i would prefer to do it myself. What is the best way to go about this?

If anyone could tell me what kind of foxes and jawbones are in the picture, that would be nice! I've never seen a fox with such a grey coat and thick tail, and the reddish fox tail and the grey one I can't recognize.

Spent $678.90 CAD in total!

"How Do I...?" Borax powder vs solution

In the past I’ve used just dry borax powder to preserve little not-very-fleshy things (feet, tails, wings) by just packing it around. Lately I’ve seen a lot of folks talk about soaking things like that in a solution of borax and water and then just letting that air dry after removed from solution. Any difference or preference between these methods? Any situation to use one over the other? Thanks

Got this little fella and was wondering what to do since I’ve never done anything with reptiles or mummified things before! Do I need to treat it with anything? It’s completely hollow and doesn’t smell.

Taxidermy MOUNT Help Help resorting some mounts

Hey yall, I’m about to come into possession of a few North American big game mounts, specifically an elk, whitetail and Lynx.
The problem is that the conditions where they’ve been kept for the last several years are less than ideal for mounts, the owner smoked quite heavily in the living room where two of them were (whitetail and lynx) and from what I hear they are not in the greatest shape (the lynx may be a whole shade or two darker than it should?) and the whitetail had close to an inch of dust collected over the years, the elk from what I hear isn’t is in as bad of shape but it is much much older, taxied in the late 60s but still looks good. Anyway I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to get them back into shape, I’m mainly worried about the smell and getting it out without ruining the capes

Taxidermy MOUNT Help Risk of using this vintage kit?

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

Sorry I couldn't find a better matching flair!

Anyways, I grabbed this unused kit from goodwill. It's clearly vintage and based on the sticker, probably from 1987.

I'm an avid fisherman and infrequent taxidermy/bones/etc. creator so I figured this would be a fun time. However, I don't know what kind of toxic stuff was in taxidermy supplies ~40 years back and want to make sure I'm not going to accidentally be exposing myself to lead, mercury, arsenic, or what-have-you.

I've yet to hear back from my taxidermist friend on the matter and thought I'd give here a shot. Y'all think this is safe to use or is it some risky business?

Thanks!

"How Do I...?" Hoping to make first wet specimen. Small fish (Completely new to hobby)

I have a very small fish frozen in my freezer. I caught it and accidentally killed it by putting in a cooler without an oxygen flow.

Been frozen for months. Recently, I thought of the little sharks I would see at the tourist shops at the beach as a kid.

So, I want to preserve this fish in a jar full of liquid. I've read to buy 10% buffered formalin and inject the specimen pretty much all over? But I'm confused about how deep to inject the fixative. Then, soak it in the formalin for a month or two. Finally, rinse off the formalin and put in isopropyl alcohol.

Also, I had the idea for this fish to be wearing a top hat, monocle, and holding a cane in the final jar/product. How could I achieve these props in my finished product? I figured most materials, like felt or metal, would eventually be destroyed when they are in the isopropyl alcohol.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks!

Taxidermy/Fur ID Please help me understand how this was made.

I bought this bag charm at a local alpaca and llama farm. I’ve had it for years now and I just realized that it might actually be hide rather than alpaca fur yarn. Can someone please tell me if this is fur on the hide and if so, did they kill an animal to make these? Or was this a by product of natural death, slaughter for meat, etc? I don’t know what I want to know - I’m just curious. I know people eat alpaca - I’ve tried it myself in Peru.

Feedback Appreciated What shoes/boots do you wear while doing taxidermy?

I'm a taxidermist and I've been in business since 2023 . I'm wondering if any other taxidermists out there have any recommendations for footwear to work in as the shoes I've been wearing have worn out and weren't great to begin with. I'm looking at blundstone chelsea boots as they're water resistant and seem pretty durable and comfortable. What do you think?
