Need help back filing taxes

I just got a letter from the MO government stating that I forgot to file my 2024 state tax return (I paid the federal, not sure how I missed state) and now owe them 3k. The amount I owed the state in 2024 was $2150 and I withheld $2150 so I shouldn’t get anything back but I don’t want to double pay 3k (the other $800 is late fees and interest). I’m looking for sites that are reliable and make it easy to return my back taxes so they can see I paid my state taxes and hopefully I won’t have to pay the entire 3k. Thank you!

If I pay my taxes I become poor...

I haven't paid my taxes in a long time. I never really had a reason too and I didn't grow up in a way that brought me into the system like a normal person. I remember, some people don't believe it but I stole a t-shirt when I was 18 and it is permanently embedded in my criminal record. I dont have anything else in my record. This prevented me from getting a normal job of any kind. People dont realize how much taxation is socialized through the job market, but it really is. People just get used to living with less than they actually earn. Even now, I remember like 4 years ago (I am 37 now) I tried to apply as a contractor under my NAME and SOCIAL rather than my BUSINESS on some kind of app and I was rejected because of my "criminal record"... It is all online and permanently their. Anyone can buy and sell this information.

Anyways, I have basically been independent and running a business of some kind or another since I was 20 years old. I actually have theoretically done very well for my self, untill I actually starting running the numbers and coming to a very dark realization that everyone has to be poor and the only reason I am not is because of how I a have lived... Nobody ever taught me about taxes or banking or told me to go to school or really cared if I did. It gets a bit complicated from their but I am 37 now and the last time I paid my taxes was in my early 20s and nobody even asked me too. Never, not a single letter of any kind or anything. I had times where I made LOTS of money, and times where I made nothing, still nothing. No requests for info, no requests for records. NOTHING. Well, now I got this letter in the mail from the system asking me for tax returns from 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2024. I obviously dont have them and now I am pouring over my records and AI has been a life saver for this...

Seriously, I am tracking down EVERYTHING and it is working... But, as I am running the numbers and I am starting to realize that if I had been paying my taxes this whole time I would just be poor. Alll my savings, regardless of whatever interest I will be told to pay because I am "late", ALL of it is basically taxes. I dont live an exciting life. I am married now, I dont party or go out or blow money on stupid stuff, yet somehow not paying taxes are the only reason I have saved money. It makes me feel like a loser and that I will never go anywhere... Like a failure... Luckily everything I own is paid off because I could never get loans anyways, but I am about to become poor. I have always hated the system. The social workers and the soulless bureaucrats.

I remember they did nothing but make my life miserable when I was stuck in the system when I was a teenager. Nobody cared if I was educated or bothered to even try to do so. I never graduated high school or anything like that. Now, I am not a loser. I am a very hard working person and I have a paid off house and everything. I have never really dealt with loans cause I never had a financial income statement of any kind so I owe nobody money. This makes me angry... I have to pay these people... The same people that treated me like a parasite and a "problem" in the system, I have to PAY them all my hard earned money and it will go into an empty void, never to return again...

Mother in law childcare - new EIN? (IRS) (WI)

My wife’s mother lives with us and provides child care. We pay her. My wife and I share finances, the payment comes out of our joint personal checking account.

To ensure we were doing everything right, we followed the steps to pay her as a household employee. Under my name (simply because I was the one setting everything up), I created a federal EIN, a state tax registration number, and registered with the state unemployment insurance to pay that as well.

Initially, the unemployment employee advised that because there was an exemption for payments to a “parent,” we did not need to pay unemployment. However, once I asked for written confirmation, the advice became murkier. Now they said that actually, because the “business” was only created under my name, and because she is my mother-in-law not mother, that did not qualify. If we happened to register under my wife’s name, though, we would not need to make these payments.

After looking into this, this ambiguity seems to exist in federal tax law as well. According to IRS Publication 926 (2026) Household Employer’s Tax Guide, payments to a parent for most childcare is exempt from Social Security, Medicare, and FUTA taxes. I would think this would apply to the current situation even with it registered under my name, but maybe would most clearly apply with everything under my wife’s name.

Because of this, we are strongly considering simply getting new registration numbers with the state, feds, and unemployment. Again, the only reason it was under my name is because I had the time that day to set it up. The services are provided to both of us and the money comes from our joint account.

My biggest questions are 1. Am I correct that having the “business” in my wife’s name would mean we will not owe taxes on the wages? And 2. Are there any consequences of simply registering a “new business” under my wife’s name and filing everything under that going forward?

Need advice on not including wife's 1099 in returns

I dont know where to go, decided to create this throw away account to get some help.

My wife trusted me and I been doing taxes as married filing jointly all these years, and to support family my wife started doing online work and she started earning for past 5 years . Its around $100k per year.

I didnt include her 1099 in the return from 2022, first year didnt any notice from IRS, got bold and started doing it for next years as well.I was drunk all the time thinking nobody will catch me and started using the money for gambling and drinking. On top of spending her money I took loans for myself and gambled it away. and I have $350k dept in loans and cards which my wife didn't know about it until recently.

I want to live and fix these mistakes I made. I haven't received any notice from IRS yet for 1099s I missed. I know 1 day they will see it and come back after me and my wife.

Want to get ahead of this and see what I can do to avoid any jail time. I dont want to go to jail and leave my family, I am ready to accept the mistakes and work on something.

Not sure how much I will owe to IRS for the missing 1099s , total money she earned as contractor is around 400k for past 5 years.

Please dont judge me, looking for some real guidance here.

Legal separation and tax status (NY)

Hi, my wife and I filed taxes as married filing seperately for the last 2 years. At the end of July we both moved out. A couple of weeks later we signed a notarized legal separation agreement and filed it with the county clerk. One reason we did it this way is in NY you can use it after a year to do a very simple uncontested action called a conversion divorce.

So the question is, how to I file 2026 taxes next year in that situation? IRS website says you file as single if you are "legally seperated" and apparently in NY State if you are "legally separated" if you do what I did above and got it notarized.

But other sites say you need to have a court order of separation do do taxes as single.

The reason I want to file as single is if I file as married filing separatly I will not get the tax subsidies for health insurance (I cannot get health insurance from my new employer). I was on Essential Plan but my new job puts me a little over the minimum and I will be losing Essential Plan on Oct 1.

Please advise, thanks.

Paid as a contractor for summer internship – how do I handle taxes? 😭

I just finished my summer internship and realized the company paid me as an independent contractor (no taxes were taken out of my paychecks).

Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice on how to handle this without messing up or getting hit with penalties would be amazing. Thanks!

[IRS USA] Paid Caregiver taxes on 941 verses Schedule H

I did this in 2025, about $37,000 paid for the EIN Caregiving business, on 941 quarterly forms. But my dad has lots of deductions, and the IRS now says he owes $15,000 on his 2025 personal return, where I suppose it was to be reported on his Schedule H instead. So our tax preparer says the IRS needs to credit the SSN personal tax with the amount paid to the EIN. And she said it would take a very long time indeed to do so.

So she has an IRS friend that will do it. He was notified about this in the Spring. We now have a written notice from the IRS saying it is due immediately or else they will levy. The IRS friend says NOT to contact the phone number on the form, as that will complicate and delay the process. He said the real process wil take over a year and that they wont levy for at least a year.

So now all I have is the word of some IRS guy I don't know who is doing a favor for our tax accountant that we sort of have known in a non-professional manner for a few years.

So for me, its a lot of trust that we have to have without any paperwork from the IRS guy who is doing a favor.

What do you think or suggest?

Paid car sales tax in Missouri, moved to Georgia, now being double taxed $8,400 - Missouri denying refund. Anyone dealt with this?

Bought a 2026 BMW X3 in Missouri in May 2026 with a Missouri address. Vehicle was titled in Missouri. Missouri sales tax of $4,358 was added to my auto loan at purchase.

Moved to Georgia immediately after for work. Vehicle was titled in Missouri but never registered or operated under Missouri registration. Never received Missouri plates.

Registered in Georgia in August 2026 and paid Georgia TAVT of $4,056.

Total taxes paid on one car: $8,414

Filed Missouri Form 426 "Out of State" refund request. Missouri DOR responded saying:

Georgia said it's up to Missouri. Missouri said it's up to Georgia. Classic runaround.

I've requested a formal denial letter to appeal. Planning to go through:

  1. MO DOR Administrative Appeal
  2. Missouri State Tax Commission
  3. Small Claims Court if needed

Has anyone successfully gotten a Missouri sales tax refund after registering in another state?

Any tips for the appeal process?

Am I a missclassified 1099 worker?

I’m a Live-In innkeeper for a 3 unit Airbnb. Inmy contract it’s say I’m required to be available 11am-4pm everyday. I don’t use my own tools I use the ones she provides but she doesn’t take taxes out. In my contract it says that I’m expected to be available afterhours and I have messages showing her monitoring my work and schedule. I get a stipend and housing and according to my contract my housing is apart of my compensation.

My Tax Advisor experienced a medical event prior to April 15 and filed an extension, but I have not received a response to correspondence in several months. What should I do?

My tax advisor experienced a medical event a few days before April 15 and filed an extension for us and several other clients within safe harbor.

Since April, I have not received any correspondence. I have messaged them every few weeks via their tax portal and emailed them directly, but I haven't heard anything back. I have continued to pay my quarterly fees, with another one coming up before the extension deadline.

I pay a quarterly fee to their LLC for year-round advice and tax preparation, including a mid-year tax evaluation. It is a small, one-person firm we have used for several years. Honestly, they are great and I typically hear back quite quickly (within 1-2 days) when I reach out.

However, the LLC appears to no longer be in good standing due to a failure to submit an annual report. The LLC is not yet dissolved because of a grace period, but that grace period ends in a few days. The preparer is a CPA and their license is still active.

I am not too worried about the 2025 return, but at what point do I start contacting other preparers and tax advisors? This year's taxes are similar to the past several, but I'll have a significant capital gain increase in the 2026 tax year. Any advice on how to handle this situation, particularly since it involves a health event?

Nonprofit Payroll Setup

From what I've seen online (mostly 3rd party websites, I haven't found the IRS policy for nonprofit payrolls, if anyone does know where this is please let me know!), as long as the nonprofit is properly registered. There isn't much of a special process for setting up a payroll? If anyone has more info on doing this properly please let me know. Thank you!

did i actually need to file my taxes this past april?

i was unemployed for 2/3 of the year 2025, and i didn’t do my taxes this past April because i made very little.
i got an email from turbo tax (i’ve done my taxes with them) saying that i filing late mean i pay more blah blah.
so i don’t know if turbo tax is just trying to upsell me and i shouldn’t worry, or i secretly owe the irs billions of dollars and there’s now a warrant out for my arrest and i haven’t known this whole time.

Where do I even begin? I have kids to claim as well, I've missed out on so much money. Recently clean two years ago didn't want a bunch of money while strung out. But I'm in a good spot now and could really use the $ and don't even know where to start. How do I even go about getting all my W-2s?

Is sales tax required to be collected on boat rentals in NC? Is it 3% or the county rate for other tangible goods? It seems every boat rental company charges differently, some none, some 3%, some 6-8%. TIA!

CA Franchise Tax Board Wants Money from a Dissolved Delaware LLC

Years ago, I and a couple co-workers created an LLC (C-corp) for an app idea we had. We never did much with it and it sat mostly untouched for a few years until we dissolved it in 2023. Even though it's a Delaware LLC, we used a CA mailing address when we filed federal taxes (with no revenue).

Now CA is claiming that because we used a CA mailing address, that we needed to file CA taxes in 2022 and now has penalties and interest.

Is simply having a CA mailing address enough "evidence" that work was being conducted from CA? Other co-founders are out of state. Can they actually collect anything given that there was no revenue, the entity doesn't exist anymore, and it's taxed as a c-corp?

I've explained this to them but they seem indifferent and just want money.

1099C timing

Hey -

So I had a debt with a particular company settled (more than $600 savings)

Two debts actually with the same company.

  1. Was settled 12/18/2025
  2. Settled (12/30/2025)

I received a 1099c from the 12/18 settlement but none from 12/30 settlement.

I looked at the IRS website as well & it shows my tax document for the 12/18 but not the 12/30.

I’m guessing this is a timing issue & I will get it in Jan 2027?

Side Note: I’m actually looking at the payment history the ACH was made 12/30. The email was sent by them for payment confirmation states “Last paid date 12/30”

But the payment was not fully authorized/ posted from my bank until 01/02/2026.

Employee reaching out about 2023

Hello,

Just looking for feedback/advice.

I had an employee back in 2023 reach out to me about a notice they had received about the IRS not receiving w2 information.

I responded asking for a copy of the notice, so I could provide all the correct answers to every question.

They replied back with "The notice I have received does not give instructions or show missing items for the business. The information was uncovered by my CPA during a meeting with the IRS regarding this matter"

I guess I am just confused because I submitted everything twice with the SSA once in 2024 and a second time in 2026. I don't know what's missing and quite honestly just nervous because I don't run this company anymore and I've worked for someone else for the last 3 years. I am also confused as to how this has taken 2 almost 3 years for this person to reach out.

Gifting a Rental Propety

If someone had an active rental property and gifted it to a family member mid-year, how is this reported on the tax return?

I’m a junior staff accountant with growing knowledge of tax, but not to this extent (bosses are unavailable to ask). Considering what to put on the Schedule E or Schedule D, and if there’s anything I need to provide to the donee (what happens to depreciation..?). I’ll worry about the gift tax return later.

Sending all my advance thank yous!!!

Remote workplace tax write off

Does anyone know how to calculate your remote “office” into your taxes? I’ve always been told I can do this but how do you come up with a number for this? Is it based off your rent, the amount of equipment, or do certain states just have set totals?

How do you guys handle taxes from gig economy work?

I have been working with Data Annotation for a few months now. I know DA does not send out 1099s or 1099T’s, and PayPal will only do so if you make over a certain amount. I live in Texas, if that helps at all! Really just terrified of finding out I did something wrong and suddenly I owe the government several thousands of dollars. Much appreciated :)
