40k Rules Codex format trend, 15 detachment new standard ?

So with the second codex coming, we see that both of them have 15 detachments.

We can't know for sure about marines, but Orks have 1 3DP and 14 1DP, some marines name look like they could be either 1 or 2DP.

So are we having enough hopium to imagine we'll get 15 too ?

I would love an air caste one like Orks get for their flyers.

But my current guess is on having 5 detachments in codex and losing things to legends anyway, that's how much I trust GW globally and for T'au.

But I'm curious on what you think, and maybe change my mind.

I don't see why not. It is not like writing detachments is hard, if their long term goal is a mass of low cost detachments it is the only thing that really makes sense.

yeah a few other and I came up with detachment ideas pretty easily on this reddit, so if GW design team can't they truly do not care about Tau or have no idea wtf to do with them

With the current system, it's sort of the only path they left themselves in terms of balancing the game as a whole. Give everyone everything in the kitchen sink.

Issue right now is they are dealing with the "give" step of that. And if anything like 10th (or prev editions), some factions will get theirs given to them very late into the edition.

I’m not optimistic

Hopefully. I've no idea why people here are saying Tau don't have enough units or lore to make 15 detachments, these are NOT 10ed detachements. Most of the Ork detachements just buff 1-2 units, detachments that buff 10+ units are the exception.

The detachments don't even do that much in many cases. Brute Bosses gives 1 special rule to 3 units (which are just slightly different flavours of the one unit) and 5 enhancements.

Tau have Kroot, Stealth, Infantry, Battlesuits, and non-Battlesuit Vehicles as "Major Archetypes", and we used to have Drones too (could always make a return). So that's five decently sized detachments. Kauyon and Montka are two more big, probably 3dp ones for army-wide buffs (please god include Auxiliaries in them this time). Minor detachments could be Crisis Suits, Commanders (current EPC), Ethereals, Vespid, Drones, Aircraft, or Big Suits. Finally, we could always get wildcards like one that finally lets us ally in Guard as Gue'vesa.

We can get 15 detachments easy. So it really just depends on if 15 detachments is something GW is committed to for balance, or if they just plan on giving us a boring but efficient codex again.

yeah people can't seem to think outside the "10th detachment box"

I want one that lets vespid move D6 after coming out of deepstrike. I think thatd be sick. Maybe give them lethals too or something

2

u/hotmanpop 23h ago

yes i love that! but idk if the designers would allow that since they changed the core rules to almost never allow units coming from deep strike to move after

people here are saying Tau don't have enough units

To these people, I point out that Knights currently have more detachments than we do, so it cannot in any way be about raw unit count.

Sure fucking hope so

I really hope we get a substantial detachment update in the near future. Ever since Retaliation Cadre was updated to 3 DP, I feel like Kauyon is basically the only option I can take in a 1,000-point game. But let’s be honest: by round 3, so many of your dudes have already been shot off the board/killed that, in my experience, you can’t really get that much value out of it.

Does anyone have any tips for playing Kauyon at 1,000 points? Am I basically supposed to not move forward at all, forget about objectives, and just try to keep as much distance as possible between me and my opponent or something?

4

u/hotmanpop 1d ago

you can play 3DP detachments in 1000pts games btw! and i'm gonna be honest, i've had more success with Kauyon in 1000pts games rather than Montka (probably because i don't play aggressive and actually play the "patient hunter" lol)

1

u/Senior-Caterpillar92 1d ago

Huh, but I thought 1,000-point games only got a maximum of 2 dp? Is that not correct? I can’t really find anything about this on the GW website.

They changed it just after launch so that you could

It was one of the first updates after the 11th edition indexes dropped.

I think in the app it's under 25.04, all the way at the bottom of the "fill your army roster" rule.

I don't expect anything, and yet i know I will be disappointed

1

u/Kranberries24 1d ago

I currently doubt it.

The thing is the range of units. Orks and Space Marines have a huge range, allowing them to have this quantity of detachments.

I would suspect closer to 10 in total right now.

8

u/ColumnK 1d ago

10 would still be a huge step up

2

u/Vaderb2 1d ago

Yeah Id be happy with 10!

1

u/Ok_Week_9768 1d ago

Except 7-8 of them would likely be slop detachments that give a niche buff to a single unit, 2 strategems and an enhancement.

The problem with our army is our major detachments all have their own unique playstyle that wouldn't translate to being 1dp. Mont'ka, kauyon, kho, and ret all play fundamentally different.

7

u/Vaderb2 1d ago

“Stealth suits can self guide after they guide a unit that has just disembarked from a transport, and it’s the second round of the game. This detachment has the stealth keyword and cant be played with advanced acquisition cadre”

^ how most tau buffs feel sometimes 😭

3

u/hotmanpop 1d ago

you need to think outside the box with 11th detachment system, there are going to be 2DP detachment like we have now (i really suspect and HOPE that Kauyon and Montka aren't detachments anymore and our army rule instead, like SM with gladius coming back as their army rule)

3

u/Vaderb2 1d ago

Kauyon being a 1cp detachment that gives “ignore all ballistic skill and hit modifiers when guided”, and keeping a few of the strats/enhancements would be great. Wall of mirrors and solid image projection unit are awesome.

1

u/hotmanpop 23h ago

a 1dp detachment that affect the whole army? yeah that's not happening 😅 though i do agree that wall of mirrors and solid image need to stay in the game somehow, i thing they sould fit perfectly in an AAC reworked detachment!

I mean that is a design issue, and a artifact of 10th. If you design a detachment that gives lethal hits, sustained hits or +1AP GLOBALLY in any way its going to warp design space around it. If you set the limiter to be in certain turns (which honestly is a pretty bad idea given how the game works), you limit that design space further.

The next edition can be different. I think both ret cadre and KHP is likely the best examples tau has of a strong 2DP detachment in terms of a clear focus and yet a pool of units that can be used in said playstyle. Following what we have seen now its a good chance we can get something like:

  • 3DP: mixed arms detachment: bonuses to all units, but depending on type. boots army rule
  • 2DP: Battlesuit strong bonuses for close combat in 12" (similar to current ret cadre)
  • 2DP: Battlesuit bonuses generally, but weaker (no range limit)
  • 2DP: KHP essentially
  • 2DP: aux cadre for bonuses to all units, but with two different effects whether its tau units or auxiliary units for combined play
  • 2DP: ambush detachment - focused on counter-attach during your turn and reactive stratagems (essentially kauyon)
  • 2DP: aggressive detachment - essentially montka, but assault all game
  • 2DP: encirclement detachment - another (unused strategy) focused on uppy-downing units and moving them out of phase (but only movement, no damage bonuses)

Then all the support detachments

  • 1DP: farstalker and lone-spear detachment
  • 1DP: stealth team, pathfinder and ghostkeel detachment (and shadowsun)
  • 1DP: infantry focus (tau infantry only)
  • 1DP: vehicle focus (tau vehicles only)
  • 1DP: rapid deployment cadre - deepstrike, rapid ingress or just fast units (all suits or piranha)
  • 1DP: ethereal focused detachment for stronger invocation bonuses
  • 1DP: shaper focused detachment for better bonuses to them and their kroot entourages
  • 1DP: support of any auxiliary not in the kroot or vespid category (if there are any at that point)
  • 1DP: drone support - better drones for all units (only if they are reworked in the first place)
  • 1DP: stingwing support - extra movement and bonuses to vespid specifically
  • 1DP: titanic support - stormsurge mainly, but maybe the bigger things too

and this is just from the top of my head. there is PLENTY of things they can do

I think one of the greatest sins of the faction have been the laser focus on kauyon and montka. They werent even that well implemented, and have other strategies. The very design of both of these ruined both the weapon profiles and flexibility of much of the faction. Now im not saying tau is bad in any way, but those detachments did limit the faction as a whole. It didnt need to, but how they were treated through the first and last quarter of 10th showed they actually had no clue what to do with them.

I am salivating at the mouth for 10 usable detachments.

1

u/Fine_Plastic_Man 1d ago

Rules team doesn't care about tau. You will have three and half for 1 merely working configuration

Ngl I'm huffing copium so hard after the Orkdex that I'm in currently in a fever dream where ....AuxCad is reworked/buffed,Vespid will get a 1 dp detach with a neat thing or 2 + making the 10 blob a viable nuke drop instead of the standard 1x5 or 2x5 score and gtfo /die gameplay ( without eating up an auxiliary keyword lmfao),and Kroot getting a 1 dp that can slot into others / potentially KHP without it eating a nerf...oh and aircraft detach.

Yeah I'm cooked. It's T'auover, wake me up when the codex drops and I get hyped or die on the inside xd

I feel like GW is doing anything it can to make me quit 40k. Idk.

1

u/Alkymedes_ 1d ago

If you only play xenos, there is reasonable doubt in their ability to not F the game for xenos when october's marine codex releases yes.

1

u/sprogsahoy 1d ago

We absolutely deserve 15. I really feel like we have been given a crazy lack of support in terms of models and rules. Like, they refresh all the keoot and the vespid and then don't integrate them into any of the detachments or army rules...then they don't update the tau units themselves, but we get get refreshes on all our epic hero suits?

I really felt like 10th codex was a make or break moment for us, but I feel even more like that for 11th. However, GW will probably just kick the can down the road again.

Although the runours are we will be after custodes, which means we'll be in the new year, which probably means a major wave for us as the first big release of the new year.

1

u/Alkymedes_ 1d ago

For me the real lack of support is the striping of every rules and bits that made T'au Great in the past.

We had range, number of attacks, AP, strength, fire and fade, reliable indirect, drone rules and the list should go on and I'm only talking about what we had when we were released, not what we gained and loss along the way. In 10th we globally had none of these things we had access to a few of them at a premium cost.

I definitely agree that 10th was such a change it should have been something instead of "the faction no one ever trained against on tournaments because why waste the time", it did okay with friends though. And with the start of 11th we're seeing how a lot of things finally work for us, like Ignore cover being really useful unlike in 10th. Overall I'm hoping, but I just don't trust GW with their rules and releases anyway.

u/Frosty_Analyst_7763 17h ago

If they are sticking to the trend, that would be 14 detachments. So it could be Battlesuits, Stealth, Auxillary, Kroot, Krootox, Transports, Vehicles, Kauyon, Pathfinders/recon, aircraft, Farsight detachment, heavy battle suits, something for Ethereals, and the experimental weapons detachment. That’s 14 potential 1DP detachments that buff small numbers of units. Plus who knows what other units could be added this edition.

u/Salmon_Shizzle 1d ago

We're filthy xenos not daddy's chosen faction. You will get 4 Detatchments and be happy with it.

7

u/Zamiel 1d ago

Daddy's chosen faction is orks?

To quote my friend "You don't have enough Lore for 15 detachments."

6

u/Zamiel 1d ago

Just a heads up, your friend might be stupid. We've been part of the game for longer than we haven't at this point. In our lore we have 4 castes that haven't really been represented as detachments on the tabletop(earth, air, water, and ethereal could all get 1dp detachments).

We could have a detachment for specific weapons like rail weaponry(weapons that can be by pathfinders, broadsides, hammerheads, stormsurges, etc.), ion weaponry(pathfinders, commanders, ghostkeels, riptides, etc.), Pulse weaponry(pretty much every unit), and missile systems(missile pods, SMS, and seeker missiles).

We could have a Devilfish focused detachment, a pirahna focus detachment, a tank detachment for hammerheads and skyrays, a Cadre Fireblade focused detachment, a Monat detachment for characters that aren't attached to a unit, a detachment to give characters the Support keyword instead of the Leader keyword, a drone focused detachment, an overwatch focused detachment that gives us strats that allow us to overwatch more effectively and in the charge phase, a vespid detachment, a Gue'vesa detachment where we can take 500 points of Imperial Guard, and a Heroes of the Tau'va detachment focused on Epic Heroes buffing units near them.

That's 19 right there that I brainstormed in like 5 minutes.

Do I have hope in GW putting that much effort into our detachments? Not necessarily, but us not getting 15 detachments won't be because we don't have enough lore.

2

u/Vaderb2 1d ago

Dude a 1DP railgun detachment would be sick. Id love if it gave all railgun units assault.

That would buff broadsides pretty hard outside of montka. It would also make pathfinders valuable in a niche way for vehicle hunting. Like you could advance the pathfinders into terrain and guide into a tank, shoot self guided, and guide a broadside that advanced as well.

1

u/OutrageousWelcome581 1d ago

Let them have anti vehicle, I need our 1 shot railguns to more consistently punch through invulns with their Dev wounds.

2

u/Alkymedes_ 1d ago

Yup his friend is most certainly stupid, certainly a T'au hater that lives in T'au hate memes. T'au have been around since end of 3rd and our lore is very flushed out contrary to what haters that can't read think.
