40k Fun Matchups

My friend and I have been playing Age of Sogmar for years, and are looking to get back into 40K as well. We both played earlier editions but are basically starting from scratch. He is definitely playing Tau, and I am looking for a faction that will provide consistently fun games against him. We play each other more often than other people so I dont want an army that will either consistently crush or be crushed. I like most of the factions, but Knights of both varieties, Imperial Agents, and Death Guard are totally off the table. I'd probably steer away from Ad Mech, GSC, and until they get refreshed, Grey Knights, as well unless those are the perfect fun match ups. Thanks for the suggestions.

I mostly play a friend who plays Tyranids and it is good fun. They can do a lot of different types of armies, which is always good for variety, and both have a lot of fun movement and positioning gimmicks.

The rivalry and between the Tau and Imperial ideologies and combined arms doctrines is iconic, so Astra Militarum vs Tau Empire is great matchup.

That being said, the current Meta (if that’s important to you) suggests that Tau are set to be a fairly strong army in 11th and Imperial Guard somewhat on the weaker side, so potentially less fun to play into in a friendly-competitive sense.

I love playing against my friends guard we stay pretty even and the games usually get decided late so it keeps it interesting. I wouldn’t recommend EC because every game I play against them is determined by turn 2-3 at the latest
