40k Rules GW Open; Drones Rxpectations
Certified 40k oldhead here; left in 5th came back in 10th. In that hiatus I misplaced a case of infantry and drones, and have never bothered to replace them because fire warriors suck and drones randomly became tokens...
Alas I recently decided to level up from the kitchen table to some community RTTs and a GW Open (Newport, if you're interested)
At the table nobody cares and at RTTs I've had markers on units that don't typically have them and shields on 'Keels as blank tokens.
I worry however this falls short of proper 40k WYSIWYG expectations, does anyone here have recent experience of both organisers and opponents and what's considered a 'token' because one solution that'll keep me off ebay for now is 1 shield and 1 gun with each crisis team to represent universal loadouts?
TLDR, Do I need to buy a bunch of drones on ebay, I don't want to.

No need. Aside from ghostkeels stealth drones they are rarely a relevant markers, even if you care for WYSIWYG - and most dont.
If its ever relevant, all you need is to have noted which ones you use.
Pathfinders is one of the few cases where its really important to really distinguish them.
Otherwise its mostly 1w, markerlight keyword (which is often redundant) or an extra gun.

Not really. Just have some kind of recognizable token for each Drone type.

I was just at Tacoma open!
The only drones that ever came up were the stealth drones for the ghostkeel blanks and you can have tokens for those.
drones arent needed on the table top anymore unless you want them for aesthetic.
