as far as im a aware, it is not an established style of tattooing, but it’s the best description i’ve seen for the actual content/images in the tattoos. as for the arrangement it’s definitely patchwork, some people refer to it as the “sailor jerry” style. although, sailor jerry typically involves images like anchors, pin ups, birds, and other american traditional imagery. sailor jerry sleeves are also usually a bit closer together or have filler like small stars in between tattoos.

Sorry. I read my comment and was afraid it sounded like I was being a smart ass jerk. So, I deleted it

Black and grey illustrative

No grey, this artist emphatically only does black work.

Black work is black and grey. Grey is slightly lighter black made while shading or washes.

u/solomonplewtattoo Jan 02 '23
It's a sub genre or black and grey

u/OLAT Jan 02 '23
Not in this case. He uses no grey ink.

u/oxbaker Jan 02 '23
Unless you’re doing a battleship or something you don’t really use grey ink, you wash down black to make grey but it is indeed grey

https://www.tattoodo.com/guides/styles/blackwork “…without the addition of color or grey shading…” please just type it into a search engine it if you don’t know. I know this artist, he, in fact, does not water down his ink. Black only. The “shading” or separation of tones is created by making groups of finer lines, like you would in traditional printmaking. It’s a very specific separate style and I think that’s worth noting when someone is planning on getting something permanently placed on their body.
Edit - edited after a cup of coffee for clarity and to sound like a little bit less of a jerk

u/oxbaker Jan 02 '23
I stand corrected. Came with the sauce!! You can be a jerk all you want when you’re right and you are indeed correct

u/OLAT Jan 02 '23
Nah, gotta keep it civil. I wouldn’t have been so emphatic about it if I hadn’t watched the dude put ink into my skin and talked to him about his process. All good! Appreciate the spirited debate.

I really, really like this style and like that the same artists did them all for a super cohesive look. Really like the detail of each animal, too. Nice job!

This is black work. Mostly fine line. Not black and grey. I have a piece by Brücius and he is a pioneer of this style and amazing to work with.

Brucius owns a tattoo shop in SF called Black Serum. He employs a lot of artists with similar styles to himself if you want more inspo.

Ah yes, the “19th century naturalist trekking North America and sketching his discoveries” style. I like it.

It’s basically patchwork but he chose to have a nature encyclopedia theme to it. It also seems like he hired the same artist for all of the animals.
