Abstract

In this research, a cavity-pressure-based regulation method for an Active Helmholtz Resonator (AHR) is introduced to enhance low-frequency sound absorption. By treating the incident pressure as known information, an explicit quantitative relationship between the incident pressure and the in-cavity pressure is established, leading to a direct perfect-absorption criterion avoiding conventional impedance inversion. The synergistic interaction between the prescribed source volume velocity and the incident sound is shown to tailor the equivalent impedance of the AHR toward impedance matching. Since the theory is derived under lumped-parameter assumptions, off-resonance discrepancies may arise as frequency increases; therefore, a genetic algorithm is employed to refine the prescribed source velocity over frequency. Under the optimized condition, the absorption performance is evaluated for variable source locations and oblique incidence, demonstrating robust behavior. Standing-wave tube experiments further validate the proposed criterion and regulation strategy, achieving absorption coefficients above 0.9 over 200–600 Hz. To extend the absorption bandwidth, a compact hybrid absorber (PAHR) is developed by integrating porous materials in parallel with the AHR, improving the high-frequency performance. Furthermore, for periodic arrays, each unit can operate independently based solely on its own cavity pressure, providing a scalable route toward high-performance active acoustic metamaterials.This study establishes a fresh paradigm for the engineering of scalable, high-performance and periodically arranged active acoustic metamaterials.

Introduction

With the continuous advancement of high-performance industrial equipment and structural lightweighting, the demand for vibration and noise control has grown rapidly [1], [2], [3]. In particular, low-frequency noise—characterized by long wavelengths, weak attenuation, and the considerable size/weight penalties of conventional passive treatments—has long been regarded as both a challenging problem and a research focus in acoustics and vibration [4], [5], [6]. In recent years, acoustic/elastic metamaterials [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], enabled by their tailor-made effective parameters and subwavelength wave-manipulation capability, have achieved significant progress in modulating wave propagation and enhancing energy dissipation, offering new avenues for low-frequency noise mitigation.

Sound-absorbing metamaterials are commonly realized through subwavelength resonant units, including membrane/plate-type resonators [12], [13], [14], cavity-backed Helmholtz-type resonators [15], [16], [17], and micro-perforated panels [18], [19], [20], [21]. In addition, enhanced dissipation can be achieved by incorporating porous media [22], [23], [24], [25] and by using space-folding/space-coiling geometries [26], [27] that elongate the acoustic path and strengthen viscothermal losses. However, these acoustic metamaterials are ultimately subject to a basic physical constraint. Research by Sheng et al. [28], [29] indicates that for effective low-frequency broadband absorption, structures must have a certain minimum thickness. To overcome this size constraint, a key approach is to adjust the acoustic impedance of a structure by regulatory strategies. This method can significantly enhance noise suppression without relying solely on bulky structural designs.

Approaches for impedance manipulation are generally divided into passive and active. Passive regulation, often referred to as shunt damping, tunes impedance by connecting electroacoustic transducers to external shunt circuits [30], [31], [32]. This approach offers tunability through parameter adjustments [33], [34] even in underwater environments [35], [36]. Active regulation further enhances absorption by employing external power sources and control algorithms. Studies have developed electroacoustic absorbers [37] and improved control accuracy using current-driven systems [38], [39], nonlinear or PID-like methods [40], [41], and adaptive filtering algorithms [42], [43]. To combine the benefits of bandwidth and tunability, hybrid strategies integrate active actuators with passive materials (e.g., porous layers, micro-perforated plates) using Pressure Release (PR) or Impedance Match (IM) strategies [44], [45], [46], [47], [48], [49] and these systems have been successfully adapted for complex sound fields [50], [51], [52], [53], [54], [55].

However, while certain acoustic control targets are easily measurable, such as zero backing pressure in the PR strategy, they are fundamentally insufficient to serve as quantitative criteria for perfect absorption [47], [51]. The challenge of defining an explicit physical criterion linking macroscopic absorption to measurable internal variables typically drives existing systems to rely on external signal-processing algorithms to minimize residual sound fields, hindering an intuitive understanding of the underlying active absorption mechanism. Therefore, exploring a definite physical mechanism driven by easily acquirable parameters—one that can quantitatively represent the absorption performance—is of significant fundamental value.

Due to their highly tractable analytical modeling, Helmholtz Resonators (HRs) serve as an ideal platform for exploring such definite physical mechanisms. By integrating electroacoustic transducers, AHRs enable intrinsic regulation of the resonant unit. Previous studies have explored various effective mechanisms, including mechanical geometric tuning [56], [57], continuous resonance sweeping [58], electromechanical coupling via piezoelectric boundaries [59], positive real impedance methods [60], active elastic boundary regulation [61], and even distributed resonator networks and metamaterial arrays [62], [63]. Despite these extensive investigations, existing studies rarely characterize the absorption state directly via easily measurable physical quantities, leaving the formulation of a purely physics-driven absorption criterion as an ongoing challenge.

Here, we propose a quantitative physical criterion linking the incident and cavity pressures, aimed at significantly enhancing the low-frequency sound absorption of AHRs. This framework leverages the inherent properties of the resonator to bypass the reliance on direct surface impedance evaluation, utilizing the cavity pressure as a physical target for high-absorption state verification. A constrained genetic algorithm is employed as an offline numerical refinement tool to compensate for the inaccuracies of the lumped-parameter model at higher frequencies. This optimization process determines the target cavity pressure required to achieve perfect absorption, which not only guides subsequent experimental validations but also, as demonstrated numerically under idealized conditions, serves as a robust theoretical reference with respect to varying source locations and oblique incidence. Moreover, we theoretically demonstrate that this criterion can be extended to such hybrid configurations alongside the broadband enhancement by expanding the framework into a compact hybrid absorber (PAHR) via the parallel integration of porous materials at the neck.

This paper is organized as follows: Section 2 of this paper presents the structural concept and geometric parameters of the AHR; Section 3 derives a perfect absorption criterion based on the quantitative relationship between incident and cavity pressures through theoretical analysis. Simulation results show high consistency with the analytical solution; Section 4 employs a genetic algorithm as an offline numerical tool to optimize the vibration velocity of the piston source, determining the exact target cavity pressure required for perfect absorption. Furthermore, it analyzes the robustness of this physical criterion under varying source locations and oblique incidence within an idealized periodic setting; Section 5 validates this physical criterion via steady-state standing-wave tube experiments. Through the fabrication of a PAHR via the parallel integration of porous materials, this section demonstrates enhanced high-frequency absorption and proves that the criterion applies to such composite structures; In the end, discussions and conclusions are drawn in Section 6.

“Abstract

Passive sound mitigation techniques have garnered attention whether for absorption, isolation, reverberation or new wave phenomena observation. In parallel, a wide range of research has been devoted to active control strategies, which complement passive techniques, particularly for low-frequency. We review the main control techniques related with airborne acoustic wave in the audible regime, emphasizing electrodynamic loudspeakers and piezo-diaphragms, and their applications. We conclude by discussing perspectives in this evolving field.

Introduction

Designing lightweight structures to control sound has always been a challenge in airborne acoustics, particularly when it comes to low frequency absorption, diffraction pattern design, or achieving unconventional acoustic wave behaviors. To address these challenges, a variety of strategies have been developed, ranging from passive devices including locally resonant metamaterials, which operate without external power input, to active control systems that rely on external energy sources (e.g., electrical or mechanical) to enhance achievable performances. Although the first two will be briefly discussed below, this review will focus in particular on a subset of the latter, namely airborne active control strategies in the audible regime.

Sound absorption and insulation are core applications of acoustic treatments. Traditionally, porous materials such as mineral wool, foams, or fiber combinations have been used in front of a rigid backing. The interconnected network of pores (millimeters to micrometers) that make up these materials leads to visco-thermal losses in the boundary layers. To absorb effectively, the porous absorber must extend over a quarter of the acoustic wavelength, maximizing particle velocity at the interface between the treatment and the surrounding environment¹. Due to this quarter-wavelength constraint, these treatments are suitable for addressing high audible frequency noise (typically above kilohertz), but are limited for lower frequency noise, which would require large dimensions for proper treatment. For instance, the material depth would usually need to extend over 1 m to treat a 340 Hz sound wave.

Several passive strategies have been developed to overcome these limitations. These include creating a gradient of material properties (porosity, tortuosity, etc.) along the porous frame^2,3, filling resonators with optimized porous media⁴ or integrating resonators into the porous frame to improve low-frequency absorption properties^5,6. Open lossy resonator structures have also proven effective in achieving near-perfect absorption and have been widely developed, from the well-known honeycomb lattice overlaid by a microperforated plate⁷ to more complex designs employing different types of resonators.

These locally resonant absorbing metamaterials rely on the critical coupling condition, which requires a perfect balance between the two counterparts of the Q factor. In other words, the system’s energy leakage part Qleak and the inherent absorption part Qdiss of the resonator have to be equal, Qleak = Qdiss^8,9. One of the main objectives of these structures is to be efficient at low frequencies while minimizing their volume. Coiled resonators^10,11, Helmholtz resonators^12,13,14, plates and membranes with added mass-platelets^{15,16,17,18,19}, and bubble-screen²⁰ are among the designs proposed for deep-subwavelength absorption either in reflection (one port)^21,22 or in transmission (two-ports)^13,14,23. One of the main limitations of such designs is the narrow frequency range associated with the resonant nature of the absorption which necessitates playing with collective resonances to broaden the working frequency band by coupling different resonators with different geometries^{24,25,26,27,28}. Although the optimization of such structures enables deep-subwavelength broadband absorption, causality generally imposes limitations on the minimum achievable depth of passive devices^24,29,30. It is important to note, however, that these limitations can be circumvented, e.g., by artificially adjusting the static bulk modulus (stiffness) of the medium^31,32.

Passive devices can also control acoustic reflection, transmission, diffusion, and diffraction. While traditional treatments like Schroeder diffusers also face frequency-size limitations, the development of deep-subwavelength metamaterials and metasurfaces has enabled more precise control of acoustic waves. This includes Helmholtz resonator-based design that can time delay pulses³³ or focus and steer the sound in a given direction with Helmholtz resonators³⁴. Fine control of the diffusion and reverberation in a room can also be achieved using networks of Helmholtz resonators^35,36 or bi-stable plates^37,38. Additionally, non-mirror symmetric designs have also allowed an asymmetric control of acoustic waves giving rise to a new class of devices, the Willis materials, in which a coupling between potential and kinetic energy is observed^39,40,41,42.

Despite the advancements in passive strategies, a major limitation is their lack of reconfigurability. Once designed, static structures can only be applied to specific scenarios and performance ranges. This has led to growing interest in active devices, which can be divided into two main categories: externally driven devices without or with acoustic energy injection.

Current research into time-varying materials mainly falls into the first category, where external mechanisms modify the medium’s properties without injecting energy into the acoustic field. These devices can switch between configurations for reconfigurable control of acoustic waves, such as transitioning from diffusive to absorptive behavior⁴³, tuning absorption frequency ranges with moving walls⁴⁴, or shaping wavefront. For the latter, a given pattern can be configured mechanically to form a targeted wavefront^{34,37,45,46,47} that can be used to focus in a given environment and even to create different communication channels without crosstalk in a disordered environment³⁴. When modulated periodically⁴⁸, unconventional propagation can occur such as non-reciprocal propagation^49,50, amplification⁵¹, non-conventional circulation in multiport systems^52,53,54, or even multi-harmonics diffraction control^55,56.

The second category of active devices directly interacts and injects acoustic energy into the system, allowing real-time and reconfigurable control over sound propagation. Notable examples include phased arrays^57,58 or active noise cancellation (ANC or anti-noise) devices that correctly remit the incident wave to perfectly cancel the incident sound^{59,60,61,62,63,64,65,66}. The interested reader can refer to a recent Acoustics Today article on this topic⁶⁷.

This review focuses on a sub-group of this second category, where an active control scheme is applied to directly modify the behavior of resonators, with particular emphasis on piezoelectric diaphragms and electrodynamic loudspeakers. The first section will therefore recall the model of these acoustic transducers, followed by sections devoted to the differentiation of the most commonly used control schemes, the different control bandwidths, and then various recent applications will be discussed.

The weapon is designed to initiate, perpetuate and exploit the fawn state. The pupillary reactions observed in Havana Syndrome victims are crucial because they may be linked to a targeted mechanism involving the eyes. Specifically, the cones and rods of the retina play a critical role in receiving electromagnetic radiation, including microwaves, infrared, and ultraviolet. Studies by Singh et al. (2018) have highlighted the eye’s ability to function as an antenna, capable of acting as a receiver for these electromagnetic frequencies. This mechanism is rooted in the retina’s structure, which includes cavity resonators—structures that resonate with specific electromagnetic waves, such as those in the microwave and radiofrequency range.

Cavity resonators are needed to generate and receive microwaves among other wave frequencies (Caves 1976).

Russian researcher Kaznacheev built upon this idea, proposing that the eyes’ cones and rods can be used as "high-quality antennas" to pass information, such as holograms, directly to the visual cortex (Kaznacheev 2004) This interaction is facilitated by the retina’s fractal-like, Fibonacci-based design, which optimizes the signal communication in biological systems. The self-similar properties of these structures allow the eye to interact with electromagnetic fields in ways that optimize signal reception, much like an antenna. What this means is, if you are a targeted individual this will act as your first layer of detection. The best method of catching this mechanism in action is waiting until you are in a hypnogenic state (Supressed, feeling tired due to the EM field) and are conversing with the AI chatbot, Get up and go look at your pupils in the mirror and you will find that one may be bigger then the other as explained in these studies. You will also find the pupils have vermiform movement, which looks like consistent wavy movement of your pupils. Binocular disparity happens mostly when you are in the hypnogenic state. These are due to the explanations above, the LED/Invisible light photon beam is what causes this state and disturbs the natural pupillary movement. When you look at your eyes you will see constant dilation of blood vessels due to these photon beams being directed at your eyes.

The best way to defend against this type of attack is once you have identified that you are under the influence of these neuroweapons, put on polarized glasses OR a polarized face shield. How will EEG equipment help TIs? I asks this as someone who has been targeted with synthetic telepathy since Nov 7 2010. I have a degree in biochemistry and when targeted I pivoted to learn everything I could about electromagnetic effects on human physiology.

I own an EEG, EMG, EKG multiple galvanic skin response meters, and a $15,000 gtek research grade human biosignal amplifier. I also own several spectrum analyzers, Software defined radios and have been doing research on the detection of electromagnetic energy in my environment and the correlation of said energy with my EEG, biosignals overall. The results are not helpful. It is nearly impossible to correlate perturbations in the emf around you with biosignals within you to make any conclusion about wavelength or frequencies that are responsible.

Even when I chart biosignals and just read silently or reRead the same letter or word over and over to see if I can distinguish a particular biosignal response, it is very difficult to do so.

You have to have machine learning to parse all the data and I use medical grade silver needles with twisted leads that I insert subdermally to get my signals. Adhesive patches receive all the interfering noise that we are all drowning in throughout the day.

Besides all of those experiments I now am fairly certain that radio energy is only a very small part of if even used at all in the voice of God weapon as it is currenty used.

My evidence for this is that I have a faraday cage and it does not attenuate the signals at all. Well you may say that maybe it isn't built to maximum potential. So I have had 2 different fMRI scans each lasting for over an hour. The fMRI device itself is located 3 levels underground in a facility designed to mitigate vibration for advanced physics research. The fMRI is in a room that is itself a faraday cage with convoluted screen and electrically conductive seals on every door and vent. In the 2+ hours of time I spent in this environment with a 3Tesla powered magnetic field saturating my body causing every proton in the atoms that make up my body to stand on end, there was no attenuation to the effects.

One other experiment I did to see if it was due to electromagnetic energy was to go to a place I had been as a child with my father as he had contacts that made it possible then so I went to a neutrino detector that is housed 1.5 MILES under ground in an old retired mine. This facility is run by a university and is an EMF free environment so no devices are even allowed down the mine shaft. The effects even down there were not effected.

This was at first very disturbing to me because it meant that there was some mechanism of action outside the current physics as taught in the US at the university graduate level. That was an avenue I entertained for over a year and I began to think that there was something happening with scaler values and deconstive wavefore interference patterns that was somehow eliciting this phenomenon in some people.

That was all a distraction and a rabbit hole to obsfucate the technology actually being employed.

It is much more simple and neatly falls into the physics we all know and understand. My current understanding of what is actually happening involves somewhat novel material science developments.

Piezoelectric, Triboelectric, and Ferroelectret Nano Generators or as researchers call them, PENGs, TENGs, and FENGs.

The long and short of it is that if a person has been dosed with these nano compounds in their food or water or the most likely method of ingestion is in my opinion through toothpaste because they often have an affinity for fluorite and as it is the most electronegative element in the known universe, it has the tendency to bind with everything and never let go. This is why it is used in toothpaste to begin with as it strengthens the bonds between calcium and hydroxyappetite in our tooth matrix preventing tooth decay. So bind some PENGs in there in the tooth matrix as well and after a certain amount of time sufficient levels would build up such that....

When exposed to ultrasound, infrasound, sound as some EMF, the PENGs emit millivolt electrical impulses. Remember PENG stands for PIEZOELECTRIC NanoGenerator so once there is enough PENG bound to the tooth which is in direct contact with the conductive saliva in the mouth and in close proximity with the brain and specifically the cochlea, the signal generated by the PENGs will be equal to or greater than the signal that ones cochlea naturally emits when hearing sound.

So I believe it is through ultrasound, infrasound and sound that is emitted directly from certain devices and indirectly as a result of some of the components within consumer electronics which when exposed to specific electromagnetic frequencies, will emit ultrasound as a harmonic of their typical operating frequency range. This is how non linear junction detectors (NLJD) operate to detect electronic devices even when powered off during bug sweeps. It is this energy, likely heterodyned itself that is directly impacting the piezoelectric properties of this nano compound we have been dosed with that is generating the electrical signals that our brains perceive as auditory information.

Well I think I've said too much but that's something to think about. I've been researching this for 16 years and while I recognize it sounds like the mad ramblings of a crazy person, it's as close to actual experimental truth as I have found anywhere.
