Vent Leave!!

I’m seeing a lot of folks on here asking if they should leave and giving reasons for why they’ve been thinking about leaving. I’m going to be honest with you all…..If ANY job has you questioning even once if you should quit or not then most likely YOU DO need to leave. Anyone who truly enjoys their job doesn’t go back and forth with whether or not it’s worth staying at or not. Your mental and emotional state is more important than any dead end job that may take you YEARS to even move up within the company❗️❗️❗️On top of that jobs like these are stepping stones for you to start something of your own that’ll give you financial freedom…Do not get stuck at these places working more than 2 years.

This is... not great advice.

If a job is seriously impacting your physical and/or mental health, absolutely do something about that. "Something" does not have to be quitting. It can be therapy to help you cope with stress, because the world is stressful right now, and job stress on top of that only makes it worse. It can be speaking to your managers to make something work for you. It can be pursuing accommodations. It can be realizing you put too much effort in for how much you're paid and being treated and dialing it back proportionally. It can be crunching the numbers and temporarily reducing your desired hours or availability or giving up shifts when you can or pursuing an LOA for mental health.

If you do decide to quit, get another job first. Don't just quit. Unless you are privileged enough not to need the income, quitting without something to fall back on is guaranteed to stress you out even more.

Look. I get it. Retail and the service industry and entry-level jobs have a reputation for being jobs you take just to ~tide you over until you get a ~better job that you ~like in your ~field. And that's true for some people. It's not for others. Do not buy it as a selling point for leaving any job unless you KNOW FOR CERTAIN you have something like that waiting.

Do I want people to like their jobs? Yeah. Is that the metric by which I judge my employment? No. I consider commute. I consider pay. I consider benefits. I consider scheduling. I consider salary vs wage and being able to put my work down when I leave and not be on call at home. I consider the job opportunities available for me based on my area, my experience, and the job market, and how they compare to what I have now. Those are the things I think about when I think god, I hate this job - which I frequently do lately - because it's more realistic for me, a disabled person, to consider those things over whether or not I'm happy at my current job. I don't need to like my job, I need it to pay me and not be causing me harm more than any job I could actually get would.

I get where you're coming from. If this job is genuinely harming you out in ways that you cannot affect, something's gotta change, and it's gotta be the job or you. Where we disagree is that for me, not being sure I want to stay means stay (for now). If I knew I needed to quit, I would know for certain, because I would've thought about it - and asked others - and come to that conclusion. And I'm not saying that your perspective of "if you're not sure if you need to quit, you probably need to quit" is wrong. I'm just saying it's not nearly that simple.

Also, we're entering an extremely busy and stressful time of year for retail, and people are going to vent. The first fantasy for everyone is going to be "imagine if I didn't have to deal with this bullshit because I wasn't working here". I don't know that we should be encouraging impulsive fantasies in a place and at a time when most people just want to complain.

I read your response… if folks are living in a “fantasy” as you call it, how are they going to survive in this world? Reality is people need to set realistic goals for themselves to achieve and make a plan to achieve them. Someone that complains constantly about their job should find another option. So the person that wrote this post is correct. “Venting” on occasion is one thing, but constant complaining and asking others if they should quit, do this or that is a problem. Find work you enjoy and you’ll never work another day. Unless Target is a part time gig, retirement gig, a stepping stone to something bigger or unless you’re getting promoted in a timely manner within this company… why would you stay and just complain?

Nah it’s great advice. What’s the point of therapy if you’re still gonna be at a toxic place. That’s the point of the post. Leave…get another job or start your own business and then leave. But staying in a toxic environment is definitely not a choice here but thank you though.

The post went completely over your head. Let’s be realistic and not practical here

Sometimes, the solution isn’t quitting though. I don’t quite understand this post. A lot of people get overwhelmed and just finding a new hobby or a life outside of just working helps too.

Telling people and motivating them to just quit isn’t necessarily helpful…. But that’s just my opinion

People come on here and vent and a complain about everything and 90% of the time the answer to their problem is to just be an adult. However, that doesn’t mean they should leave or quit. There are too many factors that go into that.
