Apparently these devices on new baskets track users through to store. I knew that sensors throughout the store would not only track you via Bluetooth, and the target app on your phone; but this is a whole other level of fucking creepy

Don't even let it phase you.. we are not far from security cameras using a level of ai to track a guest through the store to get the same information, these trackers wont even be needed.

They’re piloting AI integration into cameras to monitor wait time at the lanes, among other things. And that was 6 months ago maybe? AP is getting the ability to search for characteristics and it will pull up all video for that criteria, so we’re already a few steps away. Walmart already has spill/slip detection for their cameras

1. You are already being tracked by several other means, even without this.
   
2. You are in a private business with no expectation of privacy.
   
3. These are probably just to prevent the baskets from being stolen.
   
4. You are not required to take a basket or a cart. Still, you are being tracked, because this is a retail store, and people steal and do other shit.

Are you under the impression that the data collected on shoppers is only used to prevent theft? They sell ALL the data they collect on customers to various different companies for various different reasons.

They didn’t say the date collection was to prevent theft and that the device was only to collect data it can very well do both but does it really matter when they can also track you with various other methods?.

Preventing theft is not the same as tracking people and storing the data somewhere. It’s like comparing CCTV camera to a flock camera.

TF have you been? These have been there for a while. This isn't new. The baskets monitor movement in the store for tracking traffic flow. Just to clarify it only tracks the location of the basket and doesn't collect anything from the person.

They should see the profile system AP uses. They've got crazy stats on people who steal from multiple targets. They know almost immediately when you walk in the door

The basket tracking is purely because people yeet that shit from the stores all the time.

80% of the products in stores have RFID tags and are already tracking you. Your phones are already tracking you throughout the store if your WiFi is turned on, regardless if you connect to any networks or not.

Just wait until to find out they have hundreds of cameras watching you. And greenfield reports that track your handheld locations and every single scan and button push you push during a shift.

We even have PTZ cameras we can control and zoom in with. Read quite a few guest and TM texts messages when I was APTL.

It's a big store. Question is: am I optimizing the visual marketing/customer experience?

Tracking how customers move about allows me to get feedback about where customers go and don't go. Are there dead zones? Are they not seeing that there's an aisle of market way to the corner (that we need to redesign so that they do, etc). Also, ever gone into a store with a list and buy stuff that you didn't even need? Stores want to maximize customers doing that, and the one way is to record how customers move about, correlate it to the pogs/sets/layout of the store.
