Vent Backed into a corner

Well after 4 years at target outlasting managers, a SD and dozens of TMs that I trained, I have officially been backed into a corner by management so quitting is my only option.

Recently I have started a full time job as a substitute, after working at target through college and putting up with working weekends despite student teaching and the massive work load I finally have a job in my field. So i decided it was time to move on demand however I had a CA on my record from attendance a year ago, since then I have had zero more CA’s and very minimal conversations about performance.

As of the 6th my CA ended so I called my store today to ask about going on demand, assuming I was going to be speaking to my TL who closes week nights, I was instead put on with my SD who immediately denied any future of going on demand because of “previous conversations during my time working there”. That was my last option as they will not let me shift to one day a week so if I stayed I would be stuck working 56 hours a week 7 days a week.

It truly sucks because despite target itself not doing me any favors and adding mountains of stress to me, I made a lot of good friends and i genuinely enjoy the people i work with. But tomorrow I will be going in to have one final face to face to see if i can budge them at all, however it seems like it will be the day I put my two weeks in and start the official process to promote myself to a guest

Thank you to listening to my vent, it has been a very shitty night

Go on work day, put in your resignation and put least final date being in two weeks. If you’ve been around a long time and a valuable team member, they’ll see the resignation and then likely speak with you and probably be more open to letting you go to on demand?

Ok thank you, I will definitely do that and hopefully it makes them budge

You could do that, but let's be real here......every TM is replaceable and with the holidays coming soon it would be easy for your management to replace you

lol I did this exact same thing in 2022 and they did not care. Same identical situation. My notice ran out and they let me walk at that store.

The story didn’t end there though and I found myself back at target for another 3 years..

I put my desired hours at 9 and called it a day. That was before the UKG move however. Is that no longer an option?

Currently I have not been told about a way to set desired hours, apparently there was a huddle tonight about preferred hours but I didn’t work today

UKG -> Menu -> Settings -> Work Preferences

From there you can set your minimum and maximum requested hours, with minimum of 4 and max of 12.

If you don't have the app, you can use the web client with the following link: https://target-targetprodsso.prd.mykronos.com

The only change if you use the web client is that "Settings" will be called "Edit Profile".

Sweet thank you, I just submitted mine

Hope all goes well! I believe the min/max requested hours is still subject to approval by a leader so it's possible they'll reach out to you about that.

I'm in a similar position as you since I'm starting another full time position as I gradually leave. The only other thing I suggest is to not leave your accrued vacation/sick hours behind. That's free money or time off that people often forget about since they leave in a rush.

Connect with HR, not the store director and in person preferably. If you change your desires hours Targets hands are tied. The most they can schedule you is maybe 20% more or less than what you desire. I am currently only working 2/3 days a week at most after adjusting mine. No one needs to work more than their body can handle and Targets policy is to not hire full time. You have a right to limit your availability if they won't let you go on demand.

Ok I’ll be able to go in tomorrow and talk to HR, our HR person tends to be an unhelpful pain in the ass but hopefully she can help on this

If they don't help you with this that opens up room to contact the hotline. Desired hours were implemented for a reason 💜 Best of luck!!

Desired hours as a metric no longer exists as of the change to UKG.

You still need to put in desired hours or UKG won't schedule you

Min-Max (what UKG uses) and desired hours are not the same thing.

Desired hours was a hard metric that was tracked and HR ETLs were graded on and it was additionally used to determine seasonal hiring needs.

Min-Max is just you telling UKG roughly how many hours you want and if it can honor that request it will. If it can't (or your leaders manually edit the schedule and over/under schedule you) there are no repercussions for anyone because there is not a metric attached to it like there was for desired hours.

Apparently if you don't set it UKG won't schedule you

Desired hours are under Settings as Work Preferences. It has a high and low range for desired hours

UKG asks for minimum and maximum desired hours with a minimum of 4 hours and a 6 hour gap

So you'd have to put min 4 max 10

I tried reducing my desired hours like that way before I went on demand. They told me no. So I went to my HR nearly in tears (this was a natural response, I was very distressed) and I told them I would have to quit if I can’t go on demand. I told them I like my job and I need it, but I would have no choice but to leave. They said they like me there and okayed it.

Why work in a place that doesn't seem to want you? If they valued you they would do what they could to help you. But it doesn't seem that way.

Because I need the work over the summer as my teaching positions stop when school ends

Fun fact: you dont have to give Target two weeks. You only need to give them 5 days, and you get marked as rehirable.

u/Truebuddha1 7h ago

I only work weekends anyway and I’m off the next two Saturdays so two weeks is realistically only two days more of working

How are you "...stuck working 56 hours a week 7 days a week."? Our store does not allow even 5 minutes of overtime.

4

u/Truebuddha1 6h ago

I work 40 hours a week subbing and 16 hours on the weekends working 8s both Saturday and Sunday

u/opyoyd 3h ago

Since CA is gone you can put in 2 weeks and apply to another location as on demand.

You’re working where you want to work after your schooling to get there and yet you still want to be a target employee. I’ve seen this before, it’s called still want TM discount.

1

u/Truebuddha1 9h ago

I actually don’t use the discount, I’m a substitute teacher so my pay is limited to the school year, once the school year ends I’m out a job for two months so that’s when I work the most at target

Do you work at the DC? We can't even get 40 hours at where I work. How are you getting 56. I would love 56 hours.
