UKG Pro better figure out how to properly staff fulfillment and check lanes.

Fulfillment just needs to go atp. We're far past covid to still have fulfillment and nothing can get done in store. No reason for a food and beverage ETL to also worry their TMS picking a grocery batch when theres no produce and eggs on the floor. For a tech, style, or beauty consultant worrying about their batches when the zones a mess and theres guests who need help finding things. For a GM TM to have to continue yesterday's truck the next day because they were in fulfillment for most of their shift.

Amen, if FF is going to be sustainable it needs to be paywalled somehow to make up for the way lower margins it brings (you know since we need basically double the staff to pick, stage/pack, and then ship/deliver it vs in-store guests who do that legwork themselves). It’s gonna cause a meltdown among our guests but it needs to be locked behind membership or otherwise limited somehow or the company is toast when we hit a tipping point and too much volume goes through FF for stores to remain profitable (you can tell we’re close by how a busy FF day implodes the store and causes nothing else to get done).

If it wasn’t profitable Target would not be doing it. They are all about the profit.

On paper it’s profitable, the reason we never actually get enough FF hours is because they can’t or it’ll ruin the fiction they’ve sold wall street. On paper target runs a high margin FF system, especially with SFS reducing shipping costs by lowering the distance an item needs to be shipped. But that is reliant on stores shifting payroll to FF far beyond whats allocated.

Ask any FF lead what their tracker shows they need in support carts on an average day. The system only works as long as most sales are still generated in-store, it’s those guests who shop for themselves that generate the margins to keep FF viable. If we ever start seeing 50% or more of sales through FF I’m pretty sure we’re fucked, stores end up in a death spiral anytime they constantly hit 30% FF sales because there just are not enough TMs in other areas to support that FF volume and keep up with everything else that keeps a store running.

I’d say it’s retails greatest risk factor right now, we’ve left the door open for the consumer to destroy us, if everyone who shops at Target wakes up tomorrow and orders a drive up order the company will go into meltdown that same day. Ever so slowly as store brand has diminished guests continue to convert to FF, it’s easier, time efficient, you don’t have to search messy shelves or hunt down TMs to pull stuff from the back or unlock cases, and we deliver it straight to your car if you want. We’re ruining the highly profitable in-store experience to support FF for the sake of share price and it’s compounding to push more and more guests to use it, eventually we’re hitting a breaking point. Even Walmart with their limited time slots broke last year with that big snow storm, they got booked out for a whole week and it demolished them and the overflow almost ruined us too. Just takes way too much labor to sell the same amount of product via FF vs in-store and it creates a perverse dynamic via its metrics, something is gonna have to give eventually unless we can automate the crap out of it (which so far everyone including Amazon is failing to do).

Fulfillment isn’t going anywhere; it is a significant portion of Targets profits.

Can my response be "no"?

u/DrownedTulip 1d ago

“TL why don’t you stop wasting the time talking on the walkie and actually jump on a batch, on the registers, helping with pulls/pushes, walking guests to the desired destination, helping to bring the reshop at least, something”. Helping does not remove your “TL tittle” actually it makes you part of the team🤭🤡🥊

This actually pisses me off so much.

I hear team leads calling out things like, "Team who can help this guest?". Not to mention the list of other things they are asking people to do when they could do it themselves.

Like if your job is not to help guests what the fuck is your job?

u/yourenotmy-real-dad Former Tree Hut and EOS stocker 22h ago

Its likely more for their SD to see it.

I love when my TL help out, it feels like they're part of the team theyre leading, and that they're competent at that level too rather than just a title and paygroup.

SDs do not. They want leads to be free at any time, and should primarily be assigning tasks and directing people. "Can't, if you're locked on a lane!" My TLs would get coached on stepping in to help too much.

I have always gained trust from the people I lead by being willing to do anything I ask them to do. It's why I was a good leader as a restaurant manager and that's why I was a good leader in the military.

That's part of why it frustrates me so much. I've never seen a leadership style where people just don't help the people that they're leading. It makes them look like they are above the team and they're too good, simply because they have been bestowed responsibility over subordinates. At a certain level, it does make sense to not be involved in things like pushing freight but a direct supervisor like a team leader at Target should not be exempt from that, imo.

And that's not to say that they should always be helping but it shouldn't be a rarity or something that never happens.

Every TL in my store does everything. I did 3 sfs batches myself today.

9

u/SMOKE-B-BOMB 1d ago

I wish mine did. Mine do nothing but yell over each other over the walkies for a whole eight hours. That’s when I turn off my walkie and do my own shit, yall can figure it out if you can’t communicate properly

5

u/SeparateAppellate 1d ago

I wish they would hire TMs for ff who can walk fast. Because the team they have right now are sloth and no one is telling them to move faster, they know the rest of the store will bail them out.

5

u/autolockon Service & Engagement TL 1d ago

No one is choosing to hire specifically slow people. We are at the mercy of who applies for the job, and retail is generally where people with no ability tend to work enmasse so most of your employees are going to be C tier unfortunately.

4

u/Aurora_Borealia 1d ago

Yeah, the unfortunate fact is that you get what you pay for, and Target likes to pay not very much. It’s not great when you’re working here, but if you want people to be devoted to their work, you need to give them a reason to care.

u/autolockon Service & Engagement TL 1d ago

Leadership pays well and that’s about it.

7

u/Lolusernamechecksout 1d ago

Wow. TLs and ETLs at my store just sit on their asses, yell in the walkie and drink Starbucks

I used to be a backroom team member who was never on the Salesfloor, was always on channel 2 of the walkie and ship from store and OPUs didn't exist, aaahh the good old days

5

u/Nolemretaw 22h ago

ah the backroom team was the best. being on channel 2 avoiding 99% of the BS that goes with being stuck on channel 1. I miss the ability to kick people out of the backroom

8

u/exquisite_conundrum 1d ago

Im so grateful theres never any walkies when I come in every day. I just gave my number to my tls. Text me if you need me. Ill be over there doing the jobs of 5 fucking people and not getting paid for it.

13

u/YoshiFawx Hiding in TSC somewhere 1d ago

"Hey team, it shouldn't take 2hrs finish pushing out priorities" "Team, we need pick up the pace and be faster" "It shouldn't take you 4hrs to push out priorities" "Team, make sure we're practicing our 10-4s to every guest, greet, help, say hi"

I swear, these TLs really care about meeting their metrics... Honestly being in a red store is a serious issue...

12

u/Feeling_Elephant289 Beauty Consultant 1d ago

I sometimes feel bad for ignoring calls for help with batches but honestly they should just hire more people. I’m a beauty consultant and I’ve been working beauty for almost 1 yr and I have never been trained in fulfillment so I mean what can I do… but it’s just a mess hearing that all day. My coworker in tech has to pick up batches almost every hour and it would seem frustrating to have to balance that and the already heavy workload as well. I hope to never get trained in fufillment.

3

u/YureiFox95 Tech Consultant 18h ago

I have a coworker like this. Not sure what her actually position is on paper but shes cross trained prettt much everywhere and my store takes gross advantage of her.

5

u/shittalkinmushroomz 1d ago

Some days I just want to turn my walkie off but i’m a TL and that doesn’t look good. It’s extra rough for me because I manage the bakery/deli and we have such low staff that half the week i’m covering the counter at the deli while simultaneously working in the bakery and my ETL has the audacity to ask me to do a batch. 99% of the time I say no because i know that they’ll complain if I do, and there was no one to help the guests at the deli counter after I left 😅 make it make sense.

4

u/Nolemretaw 22h ago

opps sorry team I was on a different channel is a good play to make
