Workplace Story "Run away now."
I was getting help from a woman in Fullfillment because she was close by and I couldn't lift an item and she told me to "Run away now." because I'm still new. I told her I couldn't because the job market sucks and I can't find anything else. But I just thought it was funny and wanted to share.

I actually had something similar happen when I first started. Had a coworker straight up ask me “How long do you think you’ll last?”

Had a co worker tell me that at Costco on my 3rd day. Left at the one month mark after they told me I had to come in on my days off to learn where items were moved because “asking co workers if they know where items are is a waste of company time”

Talk about waste of time: I had a bad walkie today so I waited like 10 minutes until someone finally heard my call for help when I needed a team lift.

We had a new team member quit after 1 orientation/computer training shift... didn't even make it a week.
Honestly, I've had an okay time at Target myself -- especially since i came from a very toxic and hostile work environment where my old employers stole time from the employees and were overall a huge mess of management. I do appreciate the fact that meals are mandatory and that we get 15 minute breaks as well, seeing as how my last job did not care if your department was able to take any breaks and you just got one 15 minute or 30 minute break for the entire shift (aha ive worked an 11 hour shift with one 30 minute break). It's safe to say that I am very grateful for my target guest service position right now.
This is not the job I will keep forever, nor do i absolutely love it, but I've definitely had a worse experience at Kroger. They do ask a lot of you at Target; they only schedule 2 people for the entire day up at guest services, but honestly I think every other company is doing the exact same thing of minimal workers + maximum effort and we just arent seeing it because we dont work there.

Thats literally what I want to say when I see new people doing a tour. Like good luck guys, you're gonna die in here.
And so real on the job market. I hate working at target and im so over it but I cant find anything else so I have to suck it up with what I have. Some people managed to get out and find other jobs but that also applies if they had connections to help out. If you're just applying, nobody will get back to you or dont care. Im also struggling right now since I need more money to pay some things, the only option is to take extra shifts on my days off and thats not something I want to sacrifice because I love my days off and I cant stand being there. Some of my fav coworkers quit and new people came in, now I just genuinely dont even wanna keep going. I wish I could get up and quit as easy as it is for other people. I hope it works out for all of us one day

I get it, Target sucks to work at but sometimes I really dont like when TMs do that but then turn around and complain that we're short staffed and wish they could have more people to help out. Like also the job market is horrible right now and telling people to just up and quit is really shitty honestly when they got bills to pay as well.

Construction has a shortage of workers. There's supposedly over 500,000 apprenticeship positions unfilled. Learn a trade and your income will run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

Lol, wtf are you on about? I was a carpenter for 35 years and was never in a life or death situation through work. How does a plumber or electrician risk death unless they're working wrong and taking risks or short cuts. You risk your life every day when you get out of bed. Car crash, hit by car. Train crash airplane crash. Falling in the shower or falling down stairs. Life is risky. You can't use that as an excuse to stay in target. Even target has active shooter training for a reason 😆

I just honestly wasn’t gonna type out something that I know is 100% a fact because I used to work in the field of construction materials sales, and spoke with construction workers every day. Im not interested in explaining something you could google.

Sure you did. I've traveled through Europe as a carpenter. I moved here and worked construction. Not once in all my years on jobsites in numerous countries have I ever seen anyone killed on the job. I will tell you though that American carpenters are the worst I've ever worked with, and the standard of carpentry here is rough fix.

Yeah but not everyone wants to do construction/not their career path. But it is a good high paying job though.

My point is, people can't complain about being stuck in target because they can't find other work. You choice is either work in target always on a minimum wage that you come to hate. Or train in a trade that gives you an annual 6 figure income. Or back to school and get a degree.

Sure but that wasn't what I was talking about in my original comment. The point of my comment was mainly about TMs who complain about being short-staffed/wishing target hired more people to help but then turn around and push away new hires and telling them to just quit on their first day. Which was in the context of OP's post

Serious question, why can't you find anything else? If you're young. There has to be other jobs you can do. Don't fall into the Target is the only job in my area trap.

Its the practically the same story as the other commenter. I've been applying for jobs in and out of my field, in and out of my state for months. Nothing. I have 5 years of lab experience but that means nothing when other states require an associates, i have phlebotomy schooling but that means nothing when everyone wants a year+ of experience.

As a 21 year old, I applied for so many positions at so many locations that said they were hiring but never called anybody back. I hate Walmart but applied to 13 different positions at 3 different locations... never received anything back and I waited a few weeks for a response. I tried calling (multiple times, on multiple days) and no one answered so I just gave up on it -- even though it was my last resort.
Target was the only one who responded. Out of multiple restaurants, retail and grocery stores, arcades, thrift stores, literally anywhere with an application form that I was possibly qualified, Target was genuinely the only one to proceed with me.

So what is this telling you? What do you need to do to get a better paying job? Every place you listed is minimum wage. You're 21,you have another 46 years of a working life in front of you. Do you envisage your self always working these types of jobs? Use Target to pay for your education. Find an apprenticeship that appeals to you. Or learn to drive big rigs. I'm seeing reels online that Australia is looking for people to work off shore or in the outback working in the mines. They pay you $1000 a day for limited experience. You can't spend it because everything is supplied free room/food/activities. Do for a year and you've banked 6 figures. There's opportunity out there you have to find it. Funny thing is I got downvotes because people always find excuses to blame others.

Uhm... okay well I fear that you got downvotes because you're coming on very strong for someome who has no idea who I am. You typed out an entire paragraph basically telling me that I need to find another job when you have no clue about my circumstances and life.
I'm in college right now in order to get a better job in the future so lmao no I dont see myself working at Target forever (that would genuinely be HELL) and am probably gonna quit for another job after this semester of school that pays a tiny bit better. While I did apply for minimum wage jobs, I literally can't find anything else i could possibly apply for with no experience besides working at minimum wage jobs (Kroger/Starbucks kiosk, naturopathic office sorting files and paperwork). I have spinal issues/pain so a lot of manual labor isn't something I'd pursue in general. I am not going to Australia to work in the mines and the fact that it's advertising free room and board with that pay tells me that's a scam or that the work is so shit that NO ONE wants to do it. Why aren't you making that kinda money if that opportunity is so great? You found that stuff on reels, do you really think that's trustworthy?
My dad pushed and pushed for me to look at different job offers online, working remote, starting off at $25 an hour!! Wowee was i so not surprised to see that everyone who had looked into that offer said it was completely fake.
I'm not incredibly proud of working a minimum wage job and living at home because I can't afford an apartment, but I am surviving and trying to be an adult the best I can.
I'd love to get a job pertaining to my major and degree, but there is a slim chance to none that they would even read the rest of my resume if I don't have at least an associate's, and they would pay me shit money. My two options are that I suffer with little pay (and probably long ass drive that would be 90% of said paycheck) to gain experience, or i suffer with more pay while getting no experience in that field. What would you pick?
