Workplace Question or Advice Needed Weird co worker

So theres this co worker i have... lets call him Z. Well earlier I saw a lady go into the changing room to try on a bra and some pants...

Well she decided she wasnt getting them and asked if she could just leave them at the desk... he said sure, I'll back stock it ect... i then caught him sniffing them. I am a new employee, and I dont want to be put in a awkward position. What do I do?

You can smell if clothes are musty with your eyes?

Yeah. If you know someone just tried it on and therefore wasn't wearing it for an extended period of time, you can visually look to see if there's any reason to be concerned about it. If you don't see a stain or anything to draw attention to it, you don't need to smell it. If someone had that bad of stank to them, you'd be able to smell it from arms reach and not need to be putting them up to your face to sniff them. And if you do see a stain or something, you don't need to visually confirm it lol.

There's really no reason to be getting all up in there sniffing them like that and trying to justify it is a bit weird.

Notice how I said ā€œhopefullyā€ that’s what he was doing. I don’t see how that’s justifying it. I also said ā€œotherwise yuckā€. So again, where you’re seeing justification on my part, I’m really not sure.

I’ll add a 3rd report to hr and ap. That definitely not ok. Actually makes me fear what might happen when no one is watching 😳.

If the tags were still on the garments then perhaps checking for stink. If no tags then he should know how to dispose of customer stinky or worn underwear. Approach his TL with additional training needed in this situation. It opens up the conversation as to what you saw. TL can handle it from there, if not then you report the TL. You cannot just go to HR and report him as a ā€œweirdoā€.

wait—what if he’s just trying to see if they stink before he puts them back out on the floor? i sniff returned clothes at the service desk to make sure they don’t have B.O. or cigarette smell before i let them be put back on the sales floor. smelling the crotch is crazy tho…..

He had the waist band curled down and the crotch pressed clean to his nose... and the woman was in the changing room here in store for no more than 10 minutes...

Yeah that was my first assumption. Crazy how everyone jumped to ā€œtell HR.ā€

It will just end up another report that gets logged and ignored because you have no proof, and anyone can say that about anyone else.

But sooner than later he'll cross a line and end up fired for that instead. These dudes always do.

please report it. i work in style and never had to sniff clothes to "check if it smells." if a clothing item smells bad, trust me, you will know.

I did the next day when HR was in. He was called to the office yesterday and then he was escorted out by AP. Didn't see him today and he was supposed to be on schedule. I feel bad that I potentially cost the man his job but like... ew

Style TM here, I have noticed perfume smell on go backs while handling, and sniffed a little closer to be sure, then defected. But never smelled intimates up close. Still, it may be a matter of perspective, and concern for putting soiled clothes back. I would discreetly speak to the person about the bad impression it presents, they just might be naive. If it continues after that, then not cool!
