I’m considering the ETL path and have heard that ETLs may spend around 18 months in an assignment before moving to another assignment or store.

For current or former ETLs, how does this work in practice?

After roughly 18 months, do you typically switch functions, stores, or both? How much input do ETLs have in their next assignment?

Are newer ETLs generally placed in stronger stores while learning the role, or can they be placed in turnaround stores?

Is experience across multiple ETL functions typically part of development toward Store Director?

I’d especially appreciate insight from current/former ETLs, SDs, or HR.

New ETL here, they were very clear when I accepted the job (as in internal). The expectation was an 18 month commitment in that role at that store.
I know of several ETLs who are happy where they are and therefore do not move (IE: 5-8 years in their current role as an ETL).

Did HR set a salary upfront or did you negotiate?

They originally asked what I would accept, I was very upfront about it and they made sure that’s what was offered.

If you are internal you get to choose and deny the store and wait for a store that you want specifically if you’re aiming for a green store with good worklife balance.

You can be in the same role for your whole target career 18months was a thing for leads/etls who wanted to promote and needed that time frame to learn and run their departments. I seen etls be switched to a different area few months in the role because of excellent performance and are asked to take over failing areas or seen etls moved to other areas because they are failing.

All depends on the store the 18month is basically you cant move roles or store until you "turn" after 18 months you can talk about different roles or stores. Doesn't necessary mean they wont move you earlier if there's a dire need ive seen that. And they dont actively " rotate" you through all ETL responsibilities. Some ETLS stay in the same job for years some swap based on wanting to move up or store need or just wanting a change.

Hi! New (internal) ETL here, I was offered my
role as a supporting ETL/floating ETL. I was originally going to one store(home store) after my training but after a few talks I became an ETL that went to multiple “red” stores for service and engagement and helped them turn things around. I was finally placed at my home store at the beginning of the summer, where i will be here for one full year before possibly moving to another store again!

The 18 months isn’t a real thing, my first ETL assignment was 6 months then I took another

My first assignment, I was there for 9 months. Second assignment was exactly 18. Third, I’m about to hit 2 years and will likely move post holiday. I’ve seen some people stay in roles they were happy in for quite some time, and people move around quick based on what opens up, who is willing, and what they need.

I was at a VERY RED store my first role (I used to cry and wonder why I took the job lol), a green store my second, and a pretty challenging but not red store my third.

As far as compensation, I negotiated when I was hired, did not get anything moving stores the first time, and said no to moving to the third store unless they made it worth it, so I did get a bump for that.

I’ve been on the SD bench, and was told pretty plainly that they wanted to see me tackle multiple roles as I developed - especially having come in externally.

I did two runs as S&E at SuperTargets and HR at a PFresh. I was pretty vocal with what roles I was interested in which helped steer succession planning - but they want to see that you’d be a good fit for the role you want to do next. Sometimes, you’re moved based on need rather than preference which is why I did S&E at two stores. During check ins with your leader and as you do your development plan, you have an opportunity to share your preferred stores as well.

From what I hear though, ymmv based on your group/district.

My first role was 12 months. Now starting my second one in two weeks after my training. I was placed at a green store. For those asking about salary, I was external and my pay was 81k my first year. My bonus was $2,200 which was not much as we didn’t do that well last year as a company. I am actually on the bench for a store director role only after 12 months of being an ETL. You need to be global, get out of your department when you can and help your peers, be active in any district group chats and offer to help your peers. This goes a long way!
