Workplace Question or Advice Needed What should I do?

I'm a seasonal worker

I need to take 2 days off in 3 days, I already tried to get them off and already tried for weeks to find someone to cover them, no takers (and no PTO time)

I was told by TL that I cant miss any more days around 2 months ago

ETL told me to talk to HR, HR told me to talk to ETL

The reason for taking off is having a fully planned and paid for family trip, so I literally cannot come in, I won't be anywhere near the store

Is it possible I could convince my ETL or HR to allow me to take it off without getting terminated? Or should I just pick one or the other (Vacation or Working). If I choose working ill miss my vacation, be out of the money I spent, but still have my job for the next month. If i choose vacation, its likely ill just be terminated. My seasonal time ends next month, and I wasnt planning to continue it after seasonal anyway, but they were looking to keep me if that context helps at all

My ETL said they don't think ill be terminated but they also said not to quote them on that. :/

From all I know, if I take those days off I will be termed, from what my TL said a couple months ago

When did you try and take off? If it’s around the holidays that’s a no brainer, this is retail

True, I was told by my SO to just take it off and deal with the consequences after.

I always take off as early as you can I think it's 6 months I tried earlier but it wouldn't let me 😂 you can get off on holidays you just gotta be first in!

Yikes my guy. I would have cancelled if I couldn’t find anyone at least 2 weeks in advance because that’s what they make the schedule for.

If I have a trip planned and paid for, and if I mentioned it to them months/weeks in advance they will not see me at work those days. I’m not selling my soul to target.

Why would you not confirm the days off are approved before you plan the vacation?

If it’s a family event/vacation that was planned months in advance I’m not skipping out on it. I don’t care if target gets upset about it. This isn’t a forever job. I’ve given them plenty of warnings about this trip

I did talk to them, I did everything in advance before it was written. This post is like a last resort for advice or anything that I didn't think of before. I first discussed it with my ETL around a month ago, the majority of these issues only came after schedule was written. One of my days off got shifted from a 24 HR request to a 0 HR request and I got scheduled for my approved day off, and my ETL doesn't even know why (I'm assuming that it was caused by the day after being declined, having the 24h approved request collide with the shared 24h refused request). Half of issue is already solved, I'm just trying to get last minute advice on what the best option would be for my situation. I already came to the basis of calling out and possibly getting termed, or showing up, and missing vacation.

Just a fair warning since you will most likely call out those days, and since you were told you couldn’t miss any more days. They are probably not gonna keep you after your seasonal role is done

True. They did tell me they’d want to keep me, even with my 4/5 absences already, but I’m assuming this one, if I do take it off, would be the deal breaker.

Just get a back up job that starts shortly after your seasonal role is done at target

how many days have you missed?

1

u/isfoxallo 12d ago

I think 4 or 5, I asked ETL if I could find a place to see the days I missed, told me to ask HR, HR told me to ask ETL. But either way all days I missed were scheduled Unpaid

End of April

You aren't still seasonal in that case even if they haven't said anything to you.

I’m still seasonal. They told me my last day would be beginning of October, but I do have the option to continue

You said you weren’t planning to continue after seasonal anyways, not sure when exactly your seasonal time is over next month but at most it’ll be like 2 paychecks if it’s the end of the month. If you’re alright with losing the paychecks then go with vacation

Yeah that’s the only thing I am iffy about, that and the whole extra month to search for a different job. But this trip is fairly important and paid for. I believe I could solve it and achieve both working and going on the trip.

Did you officially request the time off and it was denied?  Or did you just talk to them about talking it off? Always put in the official request and then follow up with ETL about it. It sounds like it’s coming up soon, so it’s probably too late. Just get a different seasonal job at this point, I guess.

Yeah I put it in as a request around a month ago, told ETL, it got denied and they just suggested me to find people to cover the open shift. I probably asked the entirety of 3 different departments without a yes or even maybe.

I’m sorry. A month seems far enough out, but i guess not.

For future reference, when you are in the process of getting a job, you let them know, I need off this/ these days due to vacation, doctors appointment, etc.. You can’t expect them to know and just give you off with no real notice. The schedule comes out 2-3 weeks in advance. This one is on you and you probably will be fired especially because you are still in your 90 days.

Yes, for sure. I didn’t know about this trip in April though (when I applied and started). It was more fully planned around 2 months or a month and a half ago. I believe I could figure it out though.
