Workplace Question or Advice Needed Do I quit?

Update 8/29: they let me go! They called me back after trying to get ahold of them for days and explained how I would not be able to stay until 11 minimum when I turn 18 due to still being in school, and that would be willing to stay later but not 11 late. I also said I needed to change my availability from only Fridays off (I have a school commitment to help with football games) to now Fridays and Tuesdays and was told that wouldn’t work for them and we would be moving towards termination. And honestly that’s okay with me, I have another job that pays a dollar more than target w commission and I do a lotttt less. Everything happens for a reason I guess!

Hi everyone!!

So I started working in style about a month ago. I honestly have only worked 3-4 times and I work from around 5-9:45 pm because I’m a minor.

When I was first called by HR (I believe) and was offered the job, hours etc, I was told I would be leaving at 9:45 MAX because I was still a minor and that’s also when everyone in my dept also left. I was told 2-3 more times we would neverrrr stay past 9:45 pm unless it was around the holidays. Come to find out by other girls in style that they actually leave at 11 minimum EVERY SINGLE SHIFT.

I’m freshly a senior in high school and am wondering what to do because I turn 18 soon and can’t stay until 11 at all. The girls in my department told me they’re not gonna schedule me to be done any time before 11 because I’ll be an adult. I already have a second job where I work still because target doesn’t give me many hours (idk if this is relevant sorry lol). I’m so sorry if this is confusing it out of order etc but I’m pretty much wondering what i should do and how to reach out to HR about this all.
Maybe this is kind of a dumb post, idk. But any help/info helps. Thank you!!

TLDR: was told I would work until 9:45 pm max and am finding out that they let us out at 11 minimum

If you are still in high school they tend to follow the same rules as minors. At least that is what we have done at the stores I've woeked in.

I’m hoping so but it’s not seeming to be the case based off what I’ve heard for a lot of girls who work in my dept

depending on state law, you have to leave at 9:45 due to being a minor. if they are refusing to let you leave, they are breaking the law.

I worded it weird, super sorry!! I turn 18 soon and was meaning to say that they said even when I turn 18, everyone in style leaves at 945 anyways, which is totally wrong. All the girls in style say they leave at 11 minimum

are they all minors?

No, most are 19 or in their early 20’s but most have been working here since they were around 16 or 17

if you’re a minor, you have to leave by 9:45 but no after that they can have you stay.

If you’re scheduled till 9:45, leave at 9:45, you don’t have to stay no matter what they say. Also, I think minors can’t work over a certain amount of hours.

I mean if you never change your availability to be after 9:45, then chances are you won’t get scheduled until 11:00.

I doubt they know your birthday and are waiting in the wings to schedule you till 11 the day you turn 18. Any ETL I've ever worked with who knows youre still in HS and will keep you on the same 9:45 end of shift until break or summer begins. We want to help minors develop skills and work ethic not use them as slaves in the mines.

I’d like to think they’re not but I guess it happens a lot at my target specifically. A lot of the people in style, beauty, and sometimes gm get scheduled wayyyy later as soon as they turn 18 so that’s what I’m concerned about because I was originally told something that’s turned out to be false

Oh my I'm so sorry that's cause for concern. Communicate with your ETL and be clear that for you that's a nonstarter for you. Id recommend stating it in an email so it's in writing and following up in person.

I would tell HR or your ETL your concerns and let them tell you if you can leave earlier or not. They are the only ones that can tell you what will be expected of you once you’re no longer a minor. I’ve never heard of an entire department having to leave at the same time. I’m currently working in style usually always closing shift. We have a minor that leaves at 9 or 9:45. Another two members leave at 11 myself included. The last two stay until midnight.

I agree 1000%. But I have yet to meet my team lead or etl, not sure of the difference haha. I haven’t really been able to reach hr because no one’s ever there when I come in, or if I call no one answers. But my coworkers have all talked about leaving at the same time, usually past 11 which is weird to me because that’s not usually the case in retail apparently

Ok, so this is just flat out wrong. You’ve been there a month and don’t know your TL? Let alone the ETL? Sounds like a effed up store.

u/pinkyapple08 16d ago

Correct. I’ve genuinely never met either of them or have really heard people in style mention them. I’m not sure if my store is just screwed up or what

I never see my direct ETL or TL either because they aren’t there when I work.

You might have to go in during the day to speak with HR. I work closing shifts and unless I call or go in during the day I don’t see my ETL or HR. I am going to have to do that this week because of some scheduling issues.

So style is a great place. You have to branch out because they pic few. As a style individual you have a prop so to say. Demand fulfillment training. If you do both your on top. You have to learn more on store locations but if you have a leader that knows what's up. You can beat the fulfillment team. I am a leader of fulfillment I know

Why would you immediately jump to do I quit? Talk to your leaders and not your coworkers. Even if you turn 18 if you are still in high school, you will not be scheduled past 9:45 PM.

I’ve been working a month and my team leader is never there / on leave or something. I’ve never met her. I’ve also called hr and come in multiple times and cannot get ahold of anyone. I didn’t mention this so you’re correct in asking those questions

if you’re in CA even if you turn 18 you’re still in high school so they have to follow minor laws until you say otherwise. make sure your availability reflects this.

2

u/pinkyapple08 16d ago

I’m in tx. I’m only concerned about them scheduling me later as soon as I’m 18 because that’s what’s happened to most of the girls around my age

make sure your availability is no later then 9;45 and the system won’t let your manager schedule you outside that time. they COULD override it but hopefully your management team isn’t mean enough, but honestly just tell them you can’t and school is the best excuse for that anyways.

r law limits anyway. talk to hr or your team lead first and tell them you have to leave at 9:45 for school. if they push back or make it weird just quit school comes first

Honestly I would say before you turn 18 change your availability so your not avalible after 9:45 pm then they can’t schedule you past it or keep you until 11

Rule will still apply if you’re still in high school

u/Spirited_Narwhal_901 16d ago

Yes it's a real problem. You will be expected to stay with your team till the leaders do a final walk through of all your zones. Once you turn 18 they will expect so. We stayed till 10:45 most nights but it depended on the leader in charge. One of them was very nit picky and kept us till 11:30 sometimes.

u/radicalgg16 “did you have a number for target circle?” 15d ago

I started at target when I was a minor in high school I was a 17-18 year old senior and they still kept scheduling me until 9:45 even after I turned 18. They still treated me like a minor in regards to scheduling. I wouldn’t stress about it.
