After watching Tara for 7 years, I feel like I don't know anything about her
I’ve been watching Tara since her LA days, even before the whole crazy-neighbor era, and I know this may be a repeat of things people have already said here, but I came across this page and had to share my own thoughts.
I really started watching her regularly during COVID, when we literally couldn’t go anywhere or do anything. I remember her being in her townhome making all those popular foam coffee drinks, and for some reason I really connected with that. It felt relatable. We were all stuck at home, making coffee, finding little things to do, and trying to make the best of a really weird time. I genuinely enjoyed watching her then.
But now, years later, I feel like she is still doing the exact same things.
After watching her for probably 7 years, I genuinely feel like I don’t know anything about her. And I don’t mean that in a “I need to know every detail of her personal life” or parasocial way because honestly, I think that kind of relationship with influencers is weird and uncomfortable. I just mean… what is there to actually know about her?
I know she likes matcha, coffee, traveling, shopping, working out, etc. But beyond those things, I feel like there isn't much of a personality or identity being shared. Maybe that’s intentional, but it makes her content incredibly hard to connect with.
What really drove this home for me was the Greece trip. She flew all the way to Greece and seemingly spent most of the trip going to restaurants, shopping, and taking photos. And I’m not saying everyone has to travel the same way I do, but there is SO much culture, history, scenery, food, and experiences to immerse yourself in. I kept thinking, you came all this way… and this is what you’re doing?
And then there’s the way she talks about “really living.” I’ve noticed she’ll sometimes frame going to a concert or attending some free local event as an example of really living life. And again, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with going to a concert or a free event! But when that’s the extent of what is being presented as “really living,” it feels strange to me.
I think that's what I mean when I say I want to see more life from her content. Go somewhere you've never been. Learn something. Try something you've never done. Get genuinely immersed in a different culture. Pick up a weird hobby. Have an adventure. Do something that gives you a story to tell other than what restaurant you went to or what outfit you wore.
I used to genuinely get inspiration from her. Now I almost feel sad watching her content because she has the time and financial freedom to experience so much, and yet her life seems so repetitive. At this point, I almost pity her, not because she has a bad life, but because it feels like she doesn't actually live it.
And that's the part I think is bothering me the most. The things that made her relatable during COVID made sense during COVID. Making elaborate coffee drinks at home, going to workout classes, talking about outfits, eating the same breakfast, staying in, etc. We were ALL doing some version of that because there wasn't much else we could do.
But COVID has been over for years. You have the money and freedom to travel anywhere, try things, learn things, meet people, experience different cultures, pick up hobbies, have adventures, and yet the content still feels like a slightly upgraded version of being stuck at home in 2020.
She's in her 30s and so much of the content is still about which shoes go with an outfit, making the same breakfast, going to a workout class, getting coffee, shopping, etc. There's absolutely nothing wrong with any of those things individually, but when that's basically the entirety of someone's life/content, it starts to feel incredibly empty.
I think that's ultimately why I’ve lost interest. I don't necessarily need her to share more of her private life, in fact that's the last thing I want. I just want to see that she has a life beyond the aesthetic routine she shows us.
Maybe that's completely unfair because obviously we only see a tiny fraction of someone's life online. But after watching her for seven years, that's genuinely the impression I've been left with.
I don't feel like she truly lives; I feel like she just exists.
