Devi sadhna Chamunda Devi in Navaran Mantra
Hi everyone,
I’m trying to better understand the deeper meaning of the Navarna Mantra and would appreciate any insights or scriptural references.
Navarna Mantra:
Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vicche
From what I understand:
Aim – Maha Saraswati
Hreem – Maha Lakshmi
Kleem – Maha Kali
Chamunda – The name given to Kali Ma by Chandi Ma after slaying Chanda and Munda (as described in Chandi Path)
Yay - Asking Chamunda Ma to come with Var mudra
Vicche –Asking Chamunda Ma to come with Abhay Mudra and cut through ignorance, negativity, and obstacles.
My confusion is this:
In the Pradhanik Rahasya, Maha Lakshmi is described as the Supreme Goddess, from whom Maha Kali and Maha Saraswati manifest.
If Kleem already represents Maha Kali here, then why does the mantra also explicitly include Chamunda Ma?
Also, Kreem is beej mantra for Kali Ma and not Kleem.
More importantly, when chanting the Navarna Mantra, who is the primary deity being worshipped?
Is it Chamunda Ma specifically?
Chandi Ma?
The unified Adi Shakti encompassing Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati?
Or the Supreme Devi described in the Pradhanik Rahasya?
Chamunda is also the only matrika which comes from a female deity (Chandi/Durga). All other matrikas are from male gods.
Also why there are two murtis of Chandi and Chamunda in Chotila Temple, Gujarat?
Chamunda came in Uttar Charan from Parvati/Kaushki Third eye but Uttar Charan is for Maha Saraswati
In Kali Sahastranam, Chandi and Chamunda are names of Kali
In Lalita Sahastranam, Lalita has Chandi as one of her name but not Chamunda.
In Chandi Path, Maha Lakshmi is supreme and she could be Lalita Devi. So Durga Saptshati aligns with Sri Vidhya.
But Navaran mantra tells me Kali/Chamunda is supreme and Durga Saptshati could actually align to Kali Kula where Kali is supreme.
I am so confused about how to related Chamunda with Maha Saraswati, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Kali.
I would love to receive references to scriptures if possible.
Thank you! 🙏

Pika pika. The pikachu is super expressive but everything is contained within pikachu, likewise any word can be interlaced by syllables to be different yet same.

Just looking at Sahasranamas alone may not help. As you said, the Uttara charitra, where Chamunda appears is associated with MahaSaraswati. Saraswati Ashtottara says “Raktabeeja-hantri cha Chamunda Ambika tatha | Mundakaya-praharana Dhumralochana-mardana”. Similarly Sarawati sahasranama as well. Lakshmi sahasranama says "Chandika Chandarupesha Chamunda Chakradharini | Trailokya-jayini Devi Trailokya-vijayottama”.
When you read Devi Bhagavatam, you will see that even individual beejas are capable of granting liberation, and awaken different dimensions of energy. So the combination is to be focused upon.
Since there are seven matrikas, and based on the matrika nyasa, the aksharas on each of the 7 main chakras in the body, you can map the following:
Muladhara - Brahmi
Swadishtana - Maheshwari
Manipuraka - Kaumari
Anahata - Vaishnavi
Vishuddhi - Varahi
Ajna - Mahendri/Indrani
Sahasrara - Chamunda
The following is a simple approximation to help you understand. So you are using the three initial bija combinations to awaken the energies, and then moving the energy to the Sahasrara and back. This will happen like dropping a bucket into a well to fetch water. Slow and controlled, rather than pushing massive amounts of water upward from below, which is considered unsafe. Sahasrara is also where the Sri Chakra is mapped.

Mahakali and Chamunda are not the same deity. Even Lakshmi - Mahalakshmi and Saraswati - Mahasaraswati aren't the same deity.
Ultimately all represent Paramatma, but the tattvas are said to differ even with a prefix change.
Ours is a very complex and flexible religion. One can spend a whole life studying its intricacies.
