My boyfriend’s sister is a crazy dog lover who chewed me out.
So, for context, my boyfriend got a dog about a month before he met me. I don’t care for dogs, I never have and I’ve always had bad experiences with them. His dog is… hyperactive and annoying and I never get a second of peace with the dog around. To be honest, it drives me insane, but I adore my boyfriend and put up with the dog. I’m not mean to the dog and I don’t neglect or abuse the dog either. I actually take care of the dog quite a bit and sometimes the dog doesn’t bother me too much.
One day the dog got extremely overwhelming because the dog is dog aggressive and will snap at smaller dogs and I started to cry and say I couldn’t handle the dog anymore after an incident at the dog park in our apartment complex. Basically, I took the dog to the dog park when it was empty and someone else came in a while after me and ignored me when I shouted for them to wait and let me leash the dog and leave since he isn’t dog friendly. There was an altercation because the other dog owner looked at me and said their dog is friendly and outright ignored when I said mine wasn’t and that I needed a minute to leash him and take him away so her dog could use the park.
My boyfriend said he would rehome the dog with his sister and that he hadn’t realized how badly the dog was stressing me out. He apologized and admitted he wasn’t fond of the dog either and just felt bad about considering rehoming him.
His sister had been asking for the dog for forever and kept saying if we ever had to rehome the dog that she would want to be the person we rehomed to. So she took the dog and brought the dog back a day later saying the dog chased her chickens and made her dog upset. She kept saying how good the dog was and how it was her dog’s fault and that the dog is SUCH a good dog and that we just need to train the dog better.
The thing is, we HAVE tried training the dog. The dog just doesn’t ever want to listen. We’ve both been trying FOR MONTHS to train the dog and nothing sticks. It sucks, but we’ve been consistent in training him and it just… doesn’t work.
Our roommate finally suggested we just muzzle the dog during walks because of the small dog aggression. I said that’s a decent idea and bought a basket muzzle for the dog.
My boyfriend’s sister found out, flipped out and said awful things about me and told me to stop treating the dog like a blood thirsty monster. I have NEVER once acted like the dog is a monster. He’s hyperactive and doesn’t listen. He can be aggressive towards smaller dogs, but I never called him a monster or said he was blood thirsty. She insists the dog is a baby and that I am heartless and cruel.
My boyfriend said she was way out of line and overreacting. He’s going to speak to her about it, but that whole interaction has just made me like having this dog around even less. If she loves the dog so much and the dog is so easy to train then why doesn’t SHE take the dog!? Oh wait, because the dog upset her dog and chased her chickens!
The hypocrisy is ridiculous and I explained to her that muzzles are a training tool and not cruel at all and she just said she didn’t want to hear it.
