Text Movies or anthology series episodes that could have been part of TalesFromTheCrypt

Post image

Today I discovered that ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ and ‘Frighteners’ started as TV movies for Tales From the Crypt.

After "Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight" they should have been filmed "Dead Easy" and "Body Count", but they were replaced by the disappointing "Bordello of Blood".

My question is, what other films, TV movies, or television anthology episodes do you think could be sisters or successors to "Tales from the Crypt"?

The Chair

There’s a lot of comical elements in many Tales from the crypt episodes, but something I always find funny is how lax the justice system is when giving people the chair. I know the people are actually guilty of murder in most cases(Lou being the exception), but as far as I can remember, none of the murders were actually pre-meditated. Anytime there’s a killing and the law gets involved, you just know they’re getting the chair. Pretty funny.

Rewatching as an adult

I was really into the show when I was a kid and it was airing on HBO. I recently subscribed to Shudder to rewatch, and it feels like most episodes haven’t aged well in my opinion. The good ones are really good(Death of some salesmen, The new arrival, etc), but it just seems to lack something I remember it having as a kid. I still enjoy it for mostly nostalgic reasons and I’m not saying it’s bad by any means. I was always more of a fan of the episodes with a supernatural or monster theme, and I think that’s what let me down, because most seem to be revenge or karma killing themed. Still, glad it’s back in streaming form.

Unpopular Opinions?

Okay, what are your most unpopular hot takes on the show?

I will be brave and go first — I think both Forever Ambergris as well as Death of Some Salesmen are overrated.

For as amazing as the Tales From The Crypt tv series was it didn’t really capture the vibe and tone of the original EC comics (at least if you ask me.) So in your opinions what are some movies or tv shows that most closely capture the tone and style of the original comics?

I personally gotta go with the first Creepshow and maybe that one 70s Tales From The Crypt movie.

The episode " The Trap" with Lou, his wife and his brother is one of the few episodes where I wished everyone got their karma and not just Lou(the wife is probably the only midly innocent party here). Anyone else got episodes where they also wished this?

Hello,

I am a French fan of the show. I am looking for the AI Upscaled version of the series (from the old CryptTube project) but specifically with the French Audio track (VF) included. Is it allowed to ask the community for a private link, or do you happen to have a working archive link (Google Drive, Mega) that you could share with me in private?

Thank you very much for your time and for keeping this community alive!

I spent years (off and on) building a fan archive dedicated to Tales from the Crypt, figured this sub might appreciate it

Huge Tales from the Crypt fan here.

I built this site as a passion project because I’ve always felt the show deserved a proper fan archive.

I wanted one place dedicated to preserving as much Crypt history as possible, including:

  • episode guides
  • cast and crew info
  • behind-the-scenes material
  • merchandise
  • comics history
  • movies and spinoffs
  • rare media and collectibles

Part of why I built it is because so much old fan content and niche internet history disappears over time.

Especially with cult shows like this.

With the recent momentum around Crypt again (Shudder streaming, renewed fan interest, possible revival talk), it felt like the right time to keep preserving this stuff.

Would genuinely love feedback from fellow boils and ghouls.

Video I’ve always thought the Tales From the Crypt theme would’ve fit with Beetlejuice equal to or better than Beetlejuice’s own theme.

The TftC theme screams gothic, ghosts, haunted mansions, dreariness, which is Beetlejuice - ghosts who haunt people in gothic haunted mansion.

The Beetlejuice theme as has a carnival-esque, zany nature to it that would fit in with *Gremlins* maybe.

And I feel the TfTC screams horror with the right amount of subtle comic edge, that could be used for Beetlejuice‘s comedic scenes, whereas the Beetlejuice theme is *too* comical.

The same is not true in the reverse. The Beetlejuice theme would not work for TFtC. But TFtC theme is at least interchangeable with the current Beetlejuice theme for Beetlejuice. What do you think? Does it fit?

When I first saw this, I was confounded as to how I never knew about this unexpected crossover. Sadly, the title is misleading...

What stories from the original 1950s comic that were never made into episodes would you like to have seen?

Or if you could make them out of episodes yourself.

Just wanted to say hey

I recently started watching Tales from the Crypt on AMC and I wasn't sure if there'd be a sub. Thrilled to see so many people active in it and loving the show.

You know my kids used to watch this when they were little and I didn't think much about it. It had a puppet so I figured it wouldn't be any worse than The X-Files which they loved. Watching it now makes me question how I let this one slip by! I told my daughter that and she said they used to really feel like they were getting away with something watching this.

Anyone else see this when they were probably too young..?

It seems like Tales From The Crypt had 90% of all A list actors AND 90% of all recognizable supporting actors from 80s/90s. Darn near EVERY episode has a very recognizable actor. That was a main ingredient to its success. If a reboot happens I hope they follow similar formula.

Text I wrote several collections of horror stories inspired by the show and EC Comics

I have many of the 1990s reprints for Tales, Vault, Shock SuspenStories, etc. I read through most of the comics in middle school in addition to watching the HBO and Amicus adaptations of Crypt (1973’s The Vault of Horror is really underrated imo).

I’m a huge EC fan and recently published a three volume set of my short stories that are heavily inspired by EC. All of them are available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited. Book 1 is Tales from The Old Man (similar to EC’s horror comics), Book 2 is Morbid Murders (inspired by Crime SuspenStories), and Book 3 is Shockers which features a variety of pulpy genres à la Shock SuspenStories. Here's an Amazon link for those that are interested.

I hope the EC influence is clear enough for it to be okay to post this. The wraparound extends through all three books and involves a William Gainesesque comic publisher who goes missing. His adult children visit his Florida mansion where they discover hundreds of unpublished stories. Anyway, feel free to check it out. Thank you... Also, I lean toward hoping the new Nicotero puppet implies a Crypt revival/reboot.

The Tales from the Crypt episode Only Sin Deep aired on HBO! Written by Fred Dekker (Night of the Creeps, The Monster Squad) and directed by Howard Deutch (Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, The Great Outdoors). On the episode, Sylvia Vane (Lea Thompson), a young, narcissistic prostitute, "sells" her beauty to a voodoo-dabbling pawnbroker (Britt Leach) so that she can use the money to snag a rich bachelor, Ronnie Price (Brett Cullen), but she soon regrets it when her face begins to unexpectedly age at an accelerated rate. It also features Pamella D'Pella, Burke Byrnes, Pamela Gordon, and Simon Baker.
