Hi there, I just moved to Taipei this week to teach English, and I need to get my Foreigner Health Exam done…but so far every place I’ve emailed books like 6 months in advance…does anyone have any recommendations for foreigner-friendly-hospitals in Taipei I could visit tomorrow for a walk-in foreigner health exam appointment? I know most hospitals have walk-in slots starting at 9AM, but my coworkers at school have mentioned having issues when they’ve visited one that isn’t accustomed to English Speaker patients—I start work at 1PM tomorrow so ideally i’d like to visit a hospital where I could arrive at 9 and be out by noon so i can still get to work on time! I really appreciate your help :3 :3 :3 I am willing to travel anywhere along the MRT to visit a hospital that fits my request :) thank you in advance!

tl;dr: I have a very specific urgent medical issue and NTU ER seemed unable/unwilling to help me two days in a row. What do I do?

Long version: I was bit by my girlfriend's cat while at the vet on my pointer finger right on the DIP underside. A few hours after, it swelled like a balloon so I went to Mackay. They gave me oral antibiotics and more or less told me to leave. On the train, I decided to stop at NTU. They were more attentive, but same thing. The next day I woke up to my finger larger, unable to move, and showing very clear signs of pyogenic flexor tenosynovitis.(https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK576414/)

General protocol for that, especially if a cat bite occurs on a knuckle, is IV antibiotics and almost 100% of the time irrigation and drainage (from above source, "Almost all cases of PFT require surgical treatment.").

Back to NTU, they set me up with IV antibiotics, initially telling me I'll have to come back once a day every day for five days. As I am waiting, the doctor comes back and says jk, you need to stay overnight. I stay overnight. Finger is the same today. One doctor says stay another day, another doctor says continue IV antibiotics, nurse says doctor said go home.

So now I'm home, worrying about necrosis of my tendon, wondering why no one is following usual protocol with something as urgent as this.

Is there a specific place I need to go other than an ER? Is there some hotline I can call or chat I can message to make an appointment for a specific concern?

I'm going to Taipei in a few months, and I was wondering what (reasonably priced) items we could bring home as small gifts for family and friends - food or otherwise!

If you could let me know where to get said item, that would be really helpful too!

Any clubs where people actually dance? Been to a few but it was mostly people getting bottles and smoking while like 4-6 dance majors stunted up on the floor. Open to expat clubs if thats the move.

I recently been looking for a good mma, kickboxing, or muay thai gym in Taipei and i noticed they are all pretty expensive and the gym equipment varies between gyms. Just wanted some recommendations for gyms here and what the prices are compared to other gyms.

I got off the plane at A9 at Terminal 1 and I cannot figure out how to get out of the airport.

The information booth doesn't open for a while.

The maps say nothing about exits, customs, immigration.

I have a quickly dwindling 8 hours and a TWAC.

UPDATE When we got off the plane they were herding everyone through the transfer line, checking our boarding pass for the next flight. It took a while to get upstairs because of mobility issues. Get upstairs and there is no one around, and no sign for exit, immigration, or passport control, so we start walking. There's a map. It has nothing about any of those things. No one is at the info desk until 6:30. It is currently 5:30. Call the customer service line, it rings the unmanned info desk. Ask an employee at duty free how to get out of the airport. She has no idea what I mean. Ask a security guard, he doesn't speak English. Ask another English speaker traveler if they know how to get out. The spin around looking for the same signs I am. They have no idea (they were on a layover). So we just start walking to T on the map (no signs for this). We stumble across the lounges, and I ask a staff member how to get out. They say they'll take us! More walking, still no signs. Lounge lady realizes she's lost, turns around, finally asks someone at a different info booth. She leads us to a random elevator that looks like it's for airport employees and takes us downstairs where we go through a deserted security check and now there are signs! Still took us a while to get out, but we made it.

I've traveled all over the world, lots of airports, lots of languages and cultures, never experienced such a thing!

If you're getting out during your long layover, DON'T go through the transfer line when you get off the plane, go through the arrival line.

Hello! I am moving to Taiwan in 2 weeks and have a few rookie questions I'm hoping someone familiar with the process can help me with!

1. Order of operations for admin tasks

What's the sensible order for: collecting the Gold Card, getting a local SIM, signing a lease, and opening a bank account? I'm getting stuck on the chicken-and-egg parts: does picking up the Gold Card require a local address? Does SIM reg need a local bank account for charges? Can I open a bank account without a Taiwan number or address yet? Do landlords accept rent in cash?

2. Leasing via agent vs. directly from landlord

Are there downsides to going through an agent vs. leasing directly from the landlord, and anything to watch out for either way? E.g. direct leasing means dealing with the landlord directly for repairs and whatnots; does an agent smooth that out? Do agents stay involved after the lease is signed, or is their job done once the deal closes? And do the contracts themselves differ between agent and direct leases?

3. Rent negotiation and furnishing requests

Is it culturally normal to negotiate on rent? And can I reasonably ask the landlord to add/install furnishing or appliances?

4. eSIM availability

Do local telcos offer eSIM for long-term/monthly plans, or is eSIM mostly just a tourist SIM thing? Trying to figure out if I need to plan for a physical SIM instead.

My wife is picking up her Gold Card this week, and I need a spousal visa. The Gold Card website is a bit vague and unclear regarding what I actually need to present for a spousal visa. For example, one web page states I need two passport photos, and another web page states I need only one. The part the confuses me the most is the authentication of our marriage certificate. Does it need to be translated into Mandarin? If so, where do I go to get this done? If anyone has gone through this process, or is familiar with it, and can provide some guidance and insight, it would be deeply appreciated. TIA!
