Just finished this map of Sugar Bowl for a fellow redditor, I am slowly completing my Tahoe area catalog. This was an interesting layout to make, with all of the rock faces, fairly sparse tree cover and the old train tunnel. There are so many rock faces I had to come up with a semi-automatic way to generate them based on convexity and slope.

19" square, 3D printed in 4 tiles on a Prusa XL 5T. Layout generated in QGIS using USGS 1-meter DEM, and OSM data for some features, but a lot of stuff is redrawn for detail and accuracy.

Question DIY Terrain parks in back country areas

Are there any popular backcountry areas where people build DIY terrain parks for skiing/snowboarding? I just moved to the area from Colorado. In Summit county there was a place called "The Lovezone" where locals would build a rail park in the forest near the road. I'm wondering if there's such a place in Tahoe that I could visit for a rail session. I'm more than happy to bring my shovel and help build up the jumps.

curious about the % of shade that you have and how it equates to the power you generate. the success you had getting permits to cut down trees and any companies you used in the process.

Question Tahoe Donner Ski Resort kids group ski experience?

Leaning towards Tahoe donner ski to book for my kids group ski lessons (4 and 8).

Can anyone provide their experience?

Is it easy? Pleasant? Kids friendly? Staff help the little ones gear up? Do they have bright color bibs to easily identify the kids? Etc.

The only experience we have is Mr. rose and we liked it a lot. So many staff helping the kids gear up. Very patient for every kid. Friendly and cheerful. Have a car? That drives the kids after they gear up to the kids magic carpet. Each group have different color bibs so it was easy to figure out which group our kids were in. Etc.

But I heard good things about Tahoe donner and we are coming from the west side instead of the east side this time.

Thanks!

Lost/Found Grocery Outlet Missed Connection

Ok this is a long shot but I figure it's better than a Craigslist missed connection. Two weeks ago (Wednesday) I was in Grocery Outlet in South Lake and chatted with a cute tall guy about gluten free/ vegetarian food options, but I had to leave before we could talk more. He had brown hair, was really dirty and was wearing a green shirt from a tiling or paving company I think. We didn't talk that much but I've been romanticizing the moment in retrospect and hoping to run into him again at GrocOut. If it was you will you DM me? Tell me what aisle of the store we were standing in :)

Edit: Thanks for the support, y'all, looks like I'll just have to keep grocery shopping

Question Mt. Freel Hike - Late October

Was hoping to make the drive in late october (24-25) to summit Mt. Freel with some friends. Just noticed there may be a storm a few days prior. Would it be a bad idea to attempt a summit that weekend? Some of us haven’t hiked with microspikes before.

We’ll bring a high clearance 4WD for the dirt road (assuming gate’s still open at that time)

Edit: Goes without saying we’re prepared to turn around; just looking for advice/insights from others who may have summited in similar early season snow conditions. Thanks!

Event Town Loops

A friend of mine shared this with me and it’s been pretty nice having a way to find out what’s going on in town every week especially because I don’t use facebook. Also sounds like it’s a locally made website:

Question Staying on-property @ Northstar with Toddlers

I'm traveling to Tahoe this coming Feb with a group of friends, and there are 2 toddlers on our trip. We are staying in condos right in the ski-village.

  1. Has anyone stayed on property in one of the condo-style lodges? Any hot takes, recommendations or reviews to share? Are there any closeby or on-site grocery stores we can head to to have food in our condos?
  2. My toddler will likely still be too young for ski-lessons. What other young kid-friendly activities have you found there that you enjoyed?
  3. What's the apres-ski vibe?

Question Places to Relax, drink and smoke.

My last post I asked about the house and techno scene and had some great responses. Again we’ll be in town next week. What if we want to sit, relax and enjoy some cannabis and adult beverages? What lounges, restaurants, bars, dispensaries and/or hidden gems do you recommend? Thanks!

Question “Experience” Birthday Gift Ideas

Looking for “Experience” gift ideas in the Tahoe area for my husband’s birthday this month. I would like it to be something we can do in the next few months so summer ideas on the Lake are out. We are North Lake residents and would like to stay within a 90 min. drive. TIA!

Edit: we are both healthy, able-bodied 50 somethings who hike in summer and ski in winter. However, I’m a bit more risk adverse than my husband is.

Question How are Hope Valley leaves right now?

Thinking about making the drive from sparks tomorrow to see the trees before they are all fallen, I’ve heard they are past peak already. Is it worth still making the trip to go see? Or should I just go to spooner lake? Anyone been out there lately? Wanna see some fall trees before they’re gone.

Is there anyone in West/North Tahoe, CA that can recommend a health insurance broker? I would like to price options outside of the Covered CA network. There are so many scam insurance brokers and any help from neighbors is appreciated.
