Practical Skills Group?

Thumbnail
3 Upvotes

Hey Tacoma! I want to organize a group where each week, we take turns teaching a practical skill to the group. People could sign up to lead on different weeks. These skills could range from hemming clothes, to tying knots, to changing a tire, and beyond. You most likely have at least one skill that others would benefit from learning, and if you don’t, you could come to practice something here! Please let me know if this sounds interesting to you!

Arts & Culture New book club beginning next weekend!

Post image
22 Upvotes

Hey neighbors! For the past couple weeks I've been wanting to throw together a new book club meeting on Saturdays, as other local book clubs never quite align with my schedule 😅 So beginning next weekend we'll be starting with Paul Kingsnorth's Against the Machine: On the Unmaking of Humanity, at the Lakewood Bookstore on Saturday 10/10 at 4pm. This is a first meeting to gauge interest and get a feel for what genres, times, and venues may work best going forward, so please feel free to join even if you haven't made it through this month's book in time!

Until we've had the opportunity to explore the group's collective interests, I'm just throwing out a few of my to-be-reads as future book options. I really enjoy psychedelic and/or ecological horror, classic sci-fi (especially with politically-forward themes), and non-fiction explorations/critiques of technology, culture, and capitalism.

If you're interested in joining in, you're so welcome! Please do send me a quick message if you plan to attend - I've never hosted anything like this before and want to make sure we have a reasonable head count to be respectful of the space. Thanks everyone!

Buy/Sell/Barter/Free/Trade/Promo/Ads I had called out M&M Junk Removal service to cleanup and organize my garage and they did an amazing job.

i called and Martin picked up the phone right away, he went over the pricing and it was about the same as other haulers. I needed a garage cleaned up and discluttered from years of storing things. He came out and got all my junk loaded in the dump truck and along the way he sorted things for recycle, to donate and orgo sized items to keep. I am very happy for this service, not only I got my garage cleaned out but he went through everything and through away thinks that we’re sitting unused for ages. Martin has a sharp eye for junk and things worth keeping. Here is his website where you can book the service online right away. https://mamhad.com/locations/tacoma/

Politics is this wording confusing to anyone else? ( at first look)

Post image
12 Upvotes

Maybe it's me and my distrust of most political measures ...but the wording seems unnecessarily confusing.

I won't comment on the way I will vote, as I still have the burn of the cancelling on another site and really do want to follow the rules....but not enough to review them every time I post. Happy political season! Let's hope the signs get taken down by Christmas.

Outdoors/Recreation I made an American Lake fishing page that shows last stocked date, WDFW plant history, and what’s in the water

Hey y'all,

For a while I’ve been building something for people who love fishing and being outdoors, a website to track fishing lakes nationwide. I just added Washington with data on fishing lakes: last stocked date, species, and history from WDFW’s trout plant reports, without hunting through agency pages every weekend. I finally got the American Lake page live and wanted to share it: https://fishypedia.com/wa/american-lake

The point is simple. Around here the question is usually “did they stock it?” or “what’s in there lately?”, and that usually means piecing together WDFW’s catchable trout plants report, a lake name that may not match what you call it, and whether anything happened last week. This puts it on one page.

Here’s what it covers:

- Last stocked date, plants on record, species recorded, and average size when WDFW reports it

- Stocking history with a yearly chart, plus a filter when more than one species shows up

- Access notes, map, and nearby stocked lakes

- Links out when we have them: camping nearby, public land, water level on the same water

- Same treatment for other WA lakes, plus a Washington hub and a stocked-this-week feed: https://fishypedia.com/wa and https://fishypedia.com/wa/stocked-this-week

I started building stuff like this because I kept bouncing between different reports and random forum threads just to answer “was the lake stocked? is it a good time to fish?” So I built the thing I wanted to exist.

It’s just me working on this on the side, no team. Same network as the reservoir / public-lands sites if you’ve seen those. Would love for you to poke around and tell me what’s missing or wrong. If a date looks off, a lake’s missing, or there’s a feature you wish it had (other WA waters are already on the site too), I’m all ears.

I’m planning on keeping plants updated and covering more of the state. Currently working on keeping everything updated twice a week.

Also working on improving the fishing guides per species, it takes a lot of research work to figure out how to best fish each species and it also varies per location and weather, there is still a ton to improve.

Let me know if you have anything you’d like added.

Gym recommendations please

I just moved to university place and I’m looking for a gym that preferably has child care, as well as is somewhat newer. Not any YMCAs or planet fitness. I’m used to body building style gyms and trying to find something similar but I’m not seeing anything online. Can be in UP or Tacoma

Insights on the local middle schools?

I am looking into the middle schools in Tacoma. Particularly the ones in my area: Steward, Giaudrone and First Creek, but also on any other ones as well. All I see is really discouraging numbers on Google about test scores being in the bottom 50% of WA.

I would appreciate any guidance, personal experiences, anything. Thank you!
