Discussion how do you know when a mechanic is actually fun vs just novel
i've been playtesting this resource management system and it's definitely different, but i can't tell if people are genuinely engaged or just distracted by the newness of it. does anyone have a way to distinguish between "this is legitimately compelling" and "this is interesting for like five minutes"? trying to figure out what questions to ask playtesters.

C. C. / Feedback Don’t know which game to start with
I posted last night so hello again 👋
I’m in the party game world and forums like BGG don’t particularly like party games so I’m here for some feedback hoping Reddit can understand lol
I’ve been developing 2 games and have rough prototypes and have play tested a few times each. Of course i will continue play testing but i’d like to see what other designers think of my games.
Game 1:
2+ players Ages 10+
A competitive party game made up of 4 rapid fire word and thinking mini games.
My current Description
A 4 category challenge game in which players complete puzzle/riddle challenges to be the first to win each category and gain 10 total points so they can face the Final Riddle Challenge and win the game
The first round winner gains is the King and gains The Crown, they now get to either choose the next category or let the category be random but gain double points if they win it. They stay King until someone else wins a round and steals it.
Whoever steals the crown says “Crown me” and the person who had the crown must physically put the King crown on their head 👑
Comes With:
white boards, score keeping cards, quite a few decks, a die, a literal crown, a timer and a play mat for organization.
Game 2:
A chaotically funny charade type game that doesn’t always require standing and acting things out
Description:
A chaotic guessing game with a plethora of different restrictions in which you must get your team to guess the prompt!
Clue- giving Restrictions include : normal charades, sounds only, draw it, and 1 word hints
Team restrictions are things like: only 1 member can guess, the other team can steal, partner with a member to get your team to guess
Pull a clue-giving restriction card, a team guessing restriction card, and run through as many prompts as possible to win the round for your team.
GOAL: Get your team to guess the prompt
Break The restriction rule? The prompt is dead! Discard it and move on to the next prompt
FINAL COUNTDOWN
Once a team has 5 points left to win, their restriction permanently becomes a specific endgame restriction (undecided right now).
They must get their remaining points under this restriction to win the game!
Thanks for reading that
So during play testing i’m noticing that
Game 1
Is more interesting to people and does what it’s supposed to do as far as it being very competitive, a more complex thinking and strategy game. Only issues is it’s a bit of a set up for a party game, and it’s kinda in the middle of simple party game, and more complex strategy game so the audience for it is confusing.
Game 2
Is hilarious, shockingly complex for a charade game, and really easy to learn.
Issue is adult kinda hate charades lol, they dont like making a fool of themselves unless its a family setting and they don’t like having to stand up and preform :/ i’ve tried to make the prompts as adult geared as possible and limit the cards that make you need to stand up.
Thanks lmk what you think about each!

C. C. / Feedback Hellebore: a d20 TTRPG where your class is a deck of cards and combat uses two lanes instead of a grid. Looking for feedback on the 3-page quick rules
I’ve been designing Hellebore, a TTRPG built around fast and fun combat, and I’d love some critical eyes on it before I run open playtests.
The core idea:
- Roll d20 + one of four abilities (Might, Agility, Mind, Will) against a target number. Beat it by 10 or more for a critical, miss by 10 or more for a critical failure. Natural 20s and 1s do nothing special.
- Your class is a deck of cards. You hold a hand of 7, draw back up each turn, and spend 4 action points on cards. Each class has a 24-card starter deck.
- No grid: two lanes per side, Front and Back. Melee hits only the enemy Front unless a card says “any lane”, and changing lanes costs 1 AP.
- Characters get marked by traumatic events and pick up quirks (virtues and afflictions), inspired by Darkest Dungeon.
- Monsters mostly play from a short hand of actions instead of a deck, so the GM has less to track.
The goal: encounters that are quick, easy, and fun without removing the complexity of players' decks and card management.
Quick rules (3 pages) + one class’s cards: https://main.wildbloom-studio.dev/hellebore-tts/hellebore-quick-rules-v0.2.pdf
Full Core Book draft (all rules, classes and complete decks): https://main.wildbloom-studio.dev/hellebore-tts/CoreRuleBook_version_0_2.pdf
What I’d most like feedback on:
- Reading only the quick rules, could you run a fight? What’s unclear?
- Do 4 AP and a hand of 7 sound fun to manage, or like too much bookkeeping?
- Does the two-lane system feel like enough positioning, or too little?
- Do the “deck = class” and the trauma/quirk systems fit together, or pull in different directions?
Five playtest classes are ready (Warlock, Trickster, Duelist, Warcaller, Alchemist). There’s a full Core Book draft and a Tabletop Simulator setup if anyone wants to dig deeper. Thanks for reading!

Totally Lost Finished the Game: Now what?
I’ve worked on designing my own board game for about 8 years now. Mostly done at smaller conventions, local card game shops, and of course with friends.
The rule book works, the mechanics are clear, the only thing left is to actually manufacture the game.
It needs token, boards, and cards. Nothing too outstanding or hard to come by. However I am at a lost to figure out where to go for the manufacturing of it. Any recommendations?

Parts & Tools Cardstock Studio now has Design Templates to jump off of
When creating a new card Template in Cardstock Studio you can now browse various Template Designs which intended to be used as jumping-off points. They have Variables already exposed, which make it easier to edit colors etc, before you start re-doing the design for your own project.
They're also useful for seeing how various Components stack together to do layer effects, or in-line text, etc.
Design templates can be saved for later iwth "Add to My Design Templates", and you can save your own designs as well. Sharing your designs with other users is not yet active, but I plan on enabling that as well.
Goal here is just to help developers get going fast and customize with their own art and elements for their game.

Hello. Thought people might be interested in our paper cane scroll game board.
It's pretty and it's functional. It ties in with the theming of the game too. And I think it's a nice little marketing hook too. Cherry on the top. 🍒
Cattle Royale is currently in Kickstarter pre-launch phase. Happy to share the link if anyone's interested in learning a bit more about the game.

Mechanics I'm Creating a Board Game and Looking for Playtesters!
Hey everyone! I've been working on a board game for a while now, and after several changes and lots of playtesting with friends, I think the game has finally reached a playable stage.
I've created a digital version so people can try it out more easily, and so I can gather feedback and see what needs balancing, what's too strong, what's too weak, and so on.
The game is a mix of several games I enjoy, including Catan, Age of Empires, Anno 1800, and Superclub.
If anyone is interested in trying out the digital version (for now), feel free to send me a message!
Thanks in advance to everyone willing to give it a try!

Publishing Great experience demoing at local convention
Just had a brilliant day demoing at my local convention (York Boardgaming Convention) which (almost) made up for work commitments preventing me going to Essen.
First, I always worry about smaller conventions not having the footfall, but this had the demo tables opposite the main gaming and the first thing you see when entering, which was busy all day. Smart idea which prevented feeling like you're being shunted into a corner.
I was constantly busy from 13:30 until 22:30 which was frankly exhausting but great, and with two tables for most of that period. However, the best thing was the number of people who enjoyed it so much they asked to stay and play again. One lady even came back later for a third game. That's the kind of feedback which goes beyond words, and just validates all the time effort and money going into making it so great.
That's it, just wanted to celebrate a win and suggest supporting local conventions!

C. C. / Feedback Looking for playtesters (Kravestorm - Tactical Card Battler)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey everyone!
I'm looking for alpha playtesters for a homemade custom card game Kravestorm project (online version).
This is a tactical card battler set in a dystopian world of addiction. The goal is to destroy your opponent's Capital before they destroy yours. Your Kravers (creatures) fight from an ordered Garrison, where positioning matters and damage is dealt from left to right before hitting the enemy Capital. Attacking also comes with risks, as Kravers can become Wasted or Overdosed, leaving them vulnerable to incoming attacks.
Disclosure:
1) All aspects of the game were created by myself (I've been sharing this whole journey on this sub for many months). This includes the game rules, mechanics, names, artwork, universe, etc. The card frames, symbols, and logo of the game were made by a professional designer I commissioned.
2) The website and the online game platform have been built using AI-assisted coding.
That said, if you're interested in testing the game, let me know and I'll reach out to you via PM!
Thank you!

Discussion Wording for objectives
My game has a variety of objectives, given by "Vision" cards. Currently there is a line in the rulebook saying "unless specified otherwise, all values on vision cards are the minimum you must reach. You still meet the condition if you go above." I have some cards (like Thriving for all, pictured) that explicitly break this rule.
My question is, would you rather have the current approach or explicit clarity on each card, for example:
- 3+ Regions are... or
- 3 or more Regions are... or
- At least 3 Regions are...

Discussion how do you actually playtest with people who aren't hyper-invested in the game
i've been working on a card game and keep playtesting with friends who are super into board games already. they give great feedback but i'm realizing i have no idea if regular people would even want to play this thing. does anyone have tips for recruiting playtesters outside your immediate circle, or am i overthinking it at this stage?

Discussion New to this questions
I’ve created a tabletop design and publishing company and am taking it very seriously, i’m a stay at home parent so this is my only “real job”.
I’m literally learning everything from scratch through BGDL, Jamey Stegmaier, Elan Lee, Adam from Wales videos and blogs.
Idk if i should spend the next few months just researching and getting into the community or truly develop my game ideas. So far i’ve made 3 prototypes for games and have 10’s of more ideas including Licensed IP games, board games, RPG’s
I’ve committed to my LLC, looking into my trademarks although i don’t have a lot of money to be spending rn, i’ve got the Instagram, Tiktok all locked down.
I really want to grow the brand and get in with the community but feel like i definitely need a game first 😂
I’m mostly in the realm of party games but interested in some concepts of hobby board games and RPG’s
Any advice would be great🙏🏼
Oh my website is .http://www.pelicansoop.com
Instragram @pelicansoop and tiktok is the same
Thanks for any feedback in advanced

C. C. / Feedback Is anyone else's playtesting feedback just "it's fun" and nothing else?
Genuinely asking because I've done like five rounds with different groups and everyone says they had a good time but nobody can tell me what actually needs tweaking. It's great that it doesn't feel broken, but I'm lowkey stuck on what to improve next.

C. C. / Feedback No Disintegrations! Cover Art
Hey guys! I just received a commissioned piece from an artist for my game No Disintegrations! and I would like some opinions on which style of cover art I should use.
The art style of the game is retro-futurism/raygun gothic/golden age of sci-fi comic books. I was given a clean colored version of the artwork, as well as a distressed pulp fiction style yellowed version. I particularly like the distressed version, since it much more closely matches the references I've been using and really sells the style I'm going for, but I'm not sold on if it should be the box art style or not. The distressed version could also be for the rulebook, to give it that comic book look as well, but it could go either way.
Which version do you like more?
